In terms of handhelds? Probably.

I don't think the consoles and PC move on until the release of the first next-gen console.

The PC doesn't really run on the same generational road as consoles.

Not necessarily the next generation of home video gaming consoles, since there wouldn't be one of those out, but definitely the next generation of gaming devices in general.

In System Wars it's next gen starts running at the time the first console is released. This gen, it was at the release of the 360.

I think handhelds are a separate entity from consoles, so the generations would be as well. Although I could be completely wrong :P

That doesn't make any sense, because a PC generation should each time a "breakthrough" gfx card is released.

It's done that way because the PC directly competes with consoles here. If it happened everytime a "breakthrough" GPU came out, the gens wouldn't be very long.

Yeah, but such is the nature of the PC. By the logic of system wars then, only the top of the line PC from 2005/6 would be allowed to be compared to the 360/ps3.

Anyways, 3DS is next gen.

No it doesn't. It's a handheld. Generally the next gen truly starts, even for PCs, when the first next gen console is released. They almost get into the realm of threatening PC games, so PC hardware companies make better gear. Also, developers won't make a photorealistic game on the PC if the console ports look like trash in comparison.

Maybe it's just...late to the party, and a 7th gen device. This whole time the DS was a 6th gen console?

The 3DS is launching the next generation. Period. It's similar to what the DS did in the current generation... yeah you can get into all kinds of arguments about the 360 being "first", but in reality, the DS was the probe that let the Wii come out and completely change the dynamic. Now, three years later, we have Sony and Microsoft trying to follow what the Wii did, which was really what the DS did. - So is the 3DS the start of the generation? Yes. If this is the right route, the 3DS is a strong indication of the direction gaming can take 5 years down the road. Were the 3DS to fail, it would extend the current generation.

according to whome exactly ? and let me rephrase what i said, i BELEIVE the x360 started this generation. Handheld can't start a whole generation. the 3Ds is out in the next year while there will be console before 2013. Handheld have their own time and era.

Okay that's better. Still wrong, when a new system is released it does technically start the next gen. According to the Wikipedia DS started the 7th gen so BY GOD IF THE WIKIPEDIA SAYS IT IT MUST BE TRUE!!!! :P

To some extent? I would say that console hold back the pc quite a bit. Back when I was into pc gaming, it supplied experiences that were unheard of on consoles. I played the pc for a completely different reason. I drew no comparisons. Even today there are no RTS, Turned-Based STrategy, Flight Sims, or even FPS games like the earlier Rainbow Six ones, that play that well on consoles.

I don't like that the pc is basically better looking console game ports. I'm not as into it now, and I'm sure there are some great games--strategy and whatnot--but I doubt they are even that much different than when I was playing the pc regularly.

I think it marks the beginning of the 6th generation of handhelds

1- the game & watch era

2- the atari lynx, sega game gear, gameboy

3- gameboy color, neo geo pocket

4- gameboy advanced

5- ds, psp

6- 3DS, PSP2

VendettaRed07

No such term as a 6th Generation for HAND HELDS...Hand helds are included in there console counterparts generation. A new generation starts when the PS3, 360 & Wii are replace what ever handheld comes out doing that release is apart of that generation. 3ds is phase 2 of handhelds for Generation 7

Handhelds run along a different generational path than consoles. 3DS is Nintendos next gen handheld. The system is likely going to run along with the next wave of xbox and ps3 systems.

I personally think handhelds are a seperatemarket, and therefore their own seperate battle from the main war (consoles and pc), I guess since the general consensus here is that it's all the same, and throw ds into who's winning polls and stuff, then yes, the 3ds begins next gen. So I suppose once it comes out discussion of 360, ps3, wii, ds, and psp will all have to be redirected to legacy forums, and system wars will only be for discussion of 3ds vs pc (since pc gen automatically starts whenever the first next gen device comes out). I'm not sure about iPhone (the future of gaming!). Does iPhone4 count as next gen? Maybe iPad was the start of gen 8 (and was actually the only device in it, and iPhone4 and 3ds are 9th gen?

 Right on.

I agree, handhelds may run the length of 2 console generations, you never know. Why in the world the PC market is bundled in with consoles is beyond me. If I go to a retail store, PCs and PC games are in a completely different area. When I went to best buy around the time Mass Effect 2 came out, the PC version wasn't even displayed along the 100s of 360 games.

They are not separate.

It marks the next generation of handhelds.

No such thing. If you look video game gens up they're all in one gen, the DS is part of the 7th, the 3DS will begin the 8th. The DS was said to have started the 7th, this is no different,

The 8th Generation of VIDEO GAMES starts when Nintendo replaces the Wii, Microsoft replaces the 360 or Sony replacing the PS3...which ever comes first WILL BE the start of Generation 8. I love handhelds but this thread is out of line.
