Does the Final Fantasy Series bring the best storylines in the jrpg genre?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
i think squere enix can do better then that.
i think KH is very interesting storywise , but like with most of the JRPG its full of cleched ( dunno how ya type it :P)
Among the most cliched.

Did you read the topic right? the genre is "jrpg's". How could FF's be among the most cliche'd? They're not off the wall unique like Valkyrie Profile (for better or worse) but looking at all the established franchises, and not just the standalone gems that come around now and then, FF's are amongst the least cliche'd.
I would say each franchise kind of has its trademarks as far as plots go, but looking at individual elements, like characters, certain plot twists, dialogue, i'd say FF's are not only some of the most unique as far as JRPGs go in general, but they also vary more from previous installments than say tales or star ocean.
Hell no. They are the most mainstream and cliched one possible. Games like Digital Devil Saga are the epitome of quality story-telling within that genre.
They have some good stories, but there are other JRPGs that have better stories in my eyes like shadow hearts 1 and 2,Kingdom hearts and persona 3.
Here comes the Final Fantasy hate.
Anyways, no. There are better stories. Xenogears PS1 era, maybe Xenosaga PS2. And XII fell short of expectations storywise. But there are those who are going to claim that Final Fantasy storylines are generic trash, because it's cool to hate a series that established itself by being a beacon of quality in the PS1 era. So, my answer is that while they're not the best, because there are always going to be those games that go so far above and beyond. But They're among the best. They may not be the best told, especially with poor translation work plaguing the games before IX, but the content of Final Fantasy games is generally better than most JRPGs out there. They're also some of the most creative JRPGs on the market, moving away from the generic designs that plague games like Star Ocean.
I suggest the JRPG fanbase enjoy Persona before it receives enough acclaim to become generic garbage as well.
No there are far better stories, infact final fantasy uses very reusable stories.

Final Fantasy reuses themes and set-ups but the content is very different.

I pretty much agree with mst of the things you have said. I loved FFX story and though it does use cliches it was all very well done. Thats just my opinion though.
They are usually great stories the way characters devlop and the story is told is amazing. Of course it is cliché at some point but come one anything in the world resolves about hero saving something... world, girl. city, president etc...
I suggest the JRPG fanbase enjoy Persona before it receives enough acclaim to become generic garbage as well.hakanakumonoI'm more angry about them putting Persona under the Megaten roof, a roof it was never under to begin with.
i vote konamis suikoden for best jrpg story, heck there are so many characters in there and so many stories that you will find something you like. also it has 3 of the best villains in a video game ever. yuber, luca blight, neclord
skanjos
Are you me? Lol just weird to hear someone else than me say something like that.
/agree (althought Sephiroth is still the king of villains ;)

i somewhat agree, i was playing suikoden 2 yesterday, neclord battle music is epic, the battle not so much.I used to believe that until I started playing JRPG's that had better stories and were more interesting story-wise. Final Fantasy has become pretty predictable story-wise for me. The stories are good nonetheless, but at some point they get predictable. Final Fantasy Tactics is still great story-wise though, so the Final Fantasy series is up there with the best of them. The best of them being Xenogears/Xenosaga, Tales of games (except Destiny), Baten Kaitos, and Grandia.gamefan67god that plot twist in baten kaitos piseed me off... kalas had all my good cards T_T
Final Fantasy Are some of the Best JRPGs but No not at all they don't have the best story lines in fact they right down suck! I didn't mind 7 story tho that was okay.:?
EDIT: Who am i kidding I liked the 7 story.
Anything that becomes popular ends up being hated on, =/.Here comes the Final Fantasy hate.

god that plot twist in baten kaitos piseed me off... kalas had all my good cards T_T  Yea I hated playing with Xelha too. I thought I would have to play with her for the rest of the game. But the biggest plot twists are in Baten Kaitos Origins right at the end of game. There were like 4-5 plot twist that made me go wtf!?![QUOTE="gamefan67"]I used to believe that until I started playing JRPG's that had better stories and were more interesting story-wise. No not at all. While of the FF titles do have good stories the only ones that really stand out is FF6 and FF Tactics IMO. I've play so many JRPGs that beat most of the FF games in terms of story.
Simply put? No, not by a long shot. Final Fantasy stories are good, but they are by far and away not as good as the upper echelon of JRPG stories. [QUOTE="hakanakumono"]I suggest the JRPG fanbase enjoy Persona before it receives enough acclaim to become generic garbage as well.VandalvideoI'm more angry about them putting Persona under the Megaten roof, a roof it was never under to begin with. Atlus wanted that cash so they slaped SMT on the title. It just like what they did with theDigital Devil Saga series and the last 2 Devil Summoner series. Not that any of those games are bad P3 and P4 beat most the JRPGs to come this gen.
IMO I say heck no! Outside of FF:Tactics and FF6 the rest range from decent to just to crappy IMO of course. Not say the FF series (story wise)is bad as the Star Ocean series though.
In my original post, i said no. But now after playing FF8, im gonna have to retract that statement a bit. They are not the best (among the best) but what i've noticed is that they are presented the best. Amazing pace, stunning graphics (at the time) and timeless music. Square uses their huge budgets to bring all thse factors together so they can make whats a standard storyline into a remarkable experience.
So basically, i think its in the pacing mainly. I've played JRPGs that have had amazing stories but sometimes they go through a dry spell and then chuck everything at you in the last hour.
Which JRPG title/series is not cliched? It's always heroes saving the world type of deal.
Gxgear
Well techically, thats in every games base plot
I say it would depend on the scenario writer and his skill to fill in the base story.Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, VIII (at the start), IX,X and even X -2 had good base plots and sub plots. FF Versus XIII is said to be done by KH, VII, and VIII's scenario writer so that will probably be good. Even FF XII had a good plot in the beginning, but if the director had stayed on it would have been complete. KH I and II has the best base story ever in S-E's time.
Also, Final Fantasy XIII sounds to have a real good plot. Im already interested to the least.
So I say yes. Some of the best plots in the genre that are enjoyed by everyone. Even though Noctune,Persona 3, and 4 are better IMO, they are not stories that could be enjoyed by everyone. Tales of Vesperia had a good one, whie Star Ocean: TLH was all over the place (but still good). LO did it well and TLR had a good one.
i dont think so, the stories can be pretty deep, but i dont consider them to be the epitomy of what a jrpg story should be, thats just me though
