Does the PSP2 stand a chance against iOS and the 3DS?

Whats your opinion system wars? A lot of people are ruling the PSP2 out and even Pachter calling it "DOA." I believe Sony has a great chance at being the underdog. Rumors of the 3DS hardware being between $250-$350 and software prices going up another $10. I believe if Sony prices right and has in enough features (camera, HD video playback, record HD video, SSD, HDMI out to play on your TV) Sony can seriously bring the heat. My only concern is software support (PSP lack of, and 3DS gaining ton of support) and Sony not announcing and releasing soon enough before Nintendo takes over the market.

It might not win the market again, but it could still bring a huge profit like the PSP did.

Yeah but remember that some days later he was like "Did I say that? O rly? You people took it out of context. Hey I have been mistaken like two or three times before."

Anyways first we need to see the real deal. But if they continue with their same philosophy, for the most part it will just be one more in the gang. Just shinning here and there, just enough to bring enough money to make Sony happy and on to the PSP3.

Price will be a huge factor.

It really has to be less than the 3DS to be viable.

If Sony can stick to its strengths than the PSP2 has a chance of doing much better than the PSP.

With two analog sticks it could have potential as the first high quality portable FPS console. With good integration to PSN for multiplayer it could fiill a niche that doesn't exist at the moment.

SSD? I think you mean Flash. Sony isn't putting an SSD drive in their portable.

With all the recent news of the 3DS and its lackluster battery and being region locked it may have a good chance. I'll probably end up buying the PSP2 while I wait on the 3DS Lite.

What does "stand a chance" mean? Why does one platform have to be the "winner" and then every other platform is "loser"? Btw, people shouldn't put much stock into what pundits say about the PSP2 (especially not Pachter). The PSP was supposed to be "dead on arrival" and yet somehow it managed to sell over 60 million units and boasts quite a wide variety of excellent games.

with the amount of bad news that the 3DS just recieved (3-5 hour battery life on highest brightness, region lock, price) I would say PSP2 has a pretty good chance if Sony plays their cards right

Does the PSP2 has franchises like Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven, Super Mario, Mario Kart, etc. that both sell software and hardware ? It cannot compete with only Monster Hunter alone, and there is a possibility it can move to other platforms like the 3DS or one of the home consoles.

Nah. The PSP2 will prove to be a mild success and have a handful of decent games (and a lot of crap), kind of like the current PSP, but nothing more than that. And the minis will just die off completely or be revamped, once people realize that they're paying four times more than what they'd pay on an iOS device.

If they include a right thumb stick they'll have the love of the bro gamers who love their FPSs. I seriously doubt that will be the PSP2's target audience however.

I will never understand why DQ 4-6 went to the DS. It utilized nothing the DS had to offer.

Yeah, I can't see bro gamers playing a FPS on the go.

Just the userbase. But yeah, I think DQ9 would have been a better game on the PSP.

Entertainment is a race? Gee, if I treated all my media choices like a race I'd - love Transformers and Avatar, not Fritz Lang's M and Buffalo 66 - play nothing except Wii Fit, Mario Kart, and Call of Duty - listen to Justin Bieber (*shudder*) Sorry, but I have enough gaming class to enjoy games as games and not care which one is winning some stupid fanboy race.

It depends if Sony wants to make games for it or not.

If they want to treat the games like little side projects then it will fail. If they go the way of Nintnedo and hav exclusive handheld devs then it might stand a chance

I'd love to believe you, but my brief experience here tells me otherwise. In addition, my time on other internet forums confirms the fact that - as insane as fanboyism seems at times - most people who say fanboyish things really do believe what they say, which is why they construct arguments to defend their side.

Unfortunately, many newcomers do not seem to understand the System Wars culture here and tend to take things seriously. To have a more serious discussion, go to the General Games Discussion forum.

I don't see why everyone is so afraid of the announcement of the 3DS having a 3-5 hour battery life.

The DSi XL only lasts 4-5 hours and it has:
1) Worse graphics (it is part of the DS family which is soon to be "last gen" though keep in mind)

2) Absolutely NO 3D.

3) These numbers are taken with NO wifi turned on, while the 3DS always has it on.

So really, what is everyone complaining about? I think it is just they either had unrealistic expectations for a machine that is going to be absolutely fantastic, or they are just haters that want to downplay the 3DS's capabilities.

Having said that Will the PSP2 stand a chance? In the gaming world it will smash the iOS, as for other aspects it will of course not do as good.

Against the 3DS? It may have a few things it does better, as will it also have a few things that it does worse. But the 3DS will be a phenomenon once again while people try to bash it for unjust reasons.

The true gamers, as well as just handheld gamers will have both. I'll be getting the 3DS on release day, and probably the second gen of the PSP2. But that is just me.

The PSP currently has some serious momentum in Japan right now; it was the best selling system in 2010 there. If that momentum can carry over to the PSP2 remains to be seen, but there's at least a chance.

It's chance of success in the North America and Europe is significantly smaller imo. That said, I hope it does well. I plan on purchasing both a PSP2 and 3DS.

Are we 100% sure the PSP2 is different from the PSP Phone? Because if that leaked phone is the PSP2 then it has FAIL written all over it in capital letters. If they come out with a proper PSP2 games machine, not a phone with the PSP name tacked on, then I'm interested...

If your XL only lasts that long, there's something wrong with it or you have it at maximum brightness and wi-fi on all the time. If people think the 3DS is actually going to last a claimed 3-5 hours with everyone on maximum, they're kidding themselves. Even Nintendo states that battery life may be lower than what they've estimated.

The DSiXL on high settings only gives you 4-5 hours of game time. That is the same as the 3DS with the 3D and brightness all the way up. Now if you are like me and don't need to have your handheld burn as bright as the sun, then your battery life will only go up.

The psp lost to the ds, however compared to other handhelds, the psp sold a drastic amount. the biggest flaw was not having two joysticks. Not to mention the 3ds is a new system, and can be plauged with new designs, as well as the psp2. new system means a whole new game. As for the iOS, apple invented an ingenius concept that many are learning from, kudos to them

So wait, everyone praises the DS for having such a long battery life, yet even when Nintendo announces that the 3DS will offer you the SAME experience length wise but with better visuals peopl complain? Yeah...not the case.

I wasn't aware that the 3DS was going to give you 8+ hours with 3DS games.

The DSiXL on high settings only gives you 4-5 hours of game time. That is the same as the 3DS with the 3D and brightness all the way up. Now if you are like me and don't need to have your handheld burn as bright as the sun, then your battery life will only go up.

Which is still a disappointment.

I think it will do great! but it won't outsell the 3DS. I don't see myself upgrading my PSP3000 to the PSP2 for at least two years.
