im confused because a lot of lemmings keep pointing out that the rsx has less ram then the 512mb in xenos, which is why the games on the 360 look sharper, but i know the specs are 256mb gddr and 265mb xdr ram.

Cant these two combine somehow to make better textures especially since the xdr is faster ram? Does the problem lie in developers having to somehow make the two types of ram work with each other?

The PS3 has 256MB of VRAM and 256MB of system RAM, the 360 has 512 Unified Ram. The PS3's OS takes a small chunk of that RAM which makes it have less available RAM for games.

the RSX can use the RAM available to the CPU, meaning it has potentially more than 256mb of RAM toaccess. also, the amount of RAM reserved for the OS has been reduced slightly from firmware updates, which frees up some more RAM for game development.

The PS3s RAM is a lot faster and more efficient than the 360s RAM because it runs at a higher clock speed and is specific for its task rather than general purpose like the 360. The PS3 also uses open GL which makes it more efficient because DX is horribly unefficient with RAM.

it's common knowledge to the knowledgable. I don't have a specific source but you can look it up rather easily.

Comes down to the differences in multiplats, it's really the GPU architectures that differ, it's not the ram.

The video card can access the system memory, but from what I understand that can have an effect on performance. Oh, and the 360 has 10 MBs of embedded video memory in addition to it's 512 MBs of unified memory. The PS3's memory runs at a faster clockspeed though.

Both 360 and PS3 have same 512MB ram but PS3 has double data transfer rate.
