Square thinks the casual gamer would be scared shitless by JRPG mechanics and they wouldn't translate into good sales worldwide?

Dark and grittier world - check

Less animu - check

Sandboxish structure - check

Ditching turn-based combat for real time affair - check

Cinematic traversing through crevices a'la Tomb Raider - check

It doesn't matter what Square think, they're not the only ones who make JRPGs.

I don't think it's being westernized, I think it's being made more accessible.

I had and still have no interest in traditional Final Fantasy 7, the remake has made me interested and wanting to play it.

I would have preferred a FFX-2 like system ... it is the best fighting system in a FF game imo, the game itself sucked compared to FFX. Nevertheless, I am willing to try new things so bring it on SE.

Its gonna sell tons either way. Its a different take on FFVII and it looks great. People who cry over the battle system still have the original FFVII to play

Incredibly stupid spiky hair on main character massively typical of JRPG's still evident: check.

All they've done is changed the combat. It looks 'darker' because the graphics are much better and more realistic. It looks less anime for the same reason. Have you seen Nino Kuni 2? It looks cartoony anime with no detail and childish just like the first one. That's not what they want for FF7 remake.

They've gone for all out action combat because that's what people want so it won't be a faithful recreation of FF7 in any way shape or form but it will probably still be a great game. As a huge FF fan I fail to see what they're doing wrong here and it is still very obviously a JRPG no matter how you swing it. I guess you're just pissed off it's not announced for Xbox One. Cry more.

I think the attention span of gamers have decreased over time.

This is a remake, afterall. I never did find the RPG elements of FFVII and its turn-based to be all that difficult. I think Final Fantasy Tactics is the best one.

This

The original FF7 is a bad game. Sure, it had a massive impact on the industry but that shit is unplayable now for anyone who doesnt have nostalgia for the series. The new trailer made me want to actually give the remake a shot despite the horrible voice acting

No, it just means they're making FF7 relevant again and remaking it with elements that would actually work in 2015. It means they're not stuck in the past and are willing to bring one of their most iconic games to the present day properly. I've never really cared for Final Fantasy VII, but if they do this right and manage to keep FF7 as big a force right now as it was back when it released, it'll be a massive achievement.

Dark and grittier world - check

Less animu - check

FFVII's Midgar has always been a dark, gritty, cyberpunk city. The Sector 1 Reactor shown in this trailer isn't any darker or grittier than the original FFVII's Sector 1 Reactor. They didn't Westernize anything there. It just looks like classic Japanese cyberpunk, which were known for being dark and gritty.

FF had already become "Less animu" ever since FFX started moving towards a more realistic art style. The art style looks very similar to Advent Children, if anything.

It's having the opposite effect on me. What I want from a remake is something that remains true to the original while updating the graphics and streamlining the UI and other such issues. Not something that changes core gameplay elements.

It's using a similar combat system to other Square Enix action RPGs like Kingdom Hearts, FFVII Crisis Core, FF Type 0 and FFXV. Again, I don't see any "Westernization" there.

@trugs26:

They are subtle at best, only "hard core gamers" would notice the difference. For example, when westernize is used in the MMORPG scene, it usually means they made acquiring xyz materials easier, less repetition, less grind. The process still remains the same but the difficulty and time required to get said materials are decreased. More than likely, this FF7 remake will adopt the same approach in addition to perhaps modernizing combat.

lemmings are idiots with closed minds and the dumbest of arguments...that's why their console is failing and no one want to make games for them.

Keeping up with modern times =/= westernizing their games.

I swear lemmings are too stupid to be alive.

As for these two points:

The original FFVII was already quite "sandboxish" (after you left Midgar). It had a large open world for its time, full of exploration, and many different side-quests and mini-games. Modern open-world games are like an evolution of what FFVII was doing.

FFVII was one of the games that popularized a cinematic approach to game design. There was a sense of cinematic traversing in Midgar early on, which was quite linear, before it became more open world after leaving Midgar.

Not sure what TC means by westernizing the game. There are some western RPGs that do turn based combat but they are most for the PC though. Personally I've found most JRPGs boring because of the level process but that is just me.

The look of the game is pretty much what they did for Advent Children and it is perfectly fine with me.

The combat is better animated but even the original was active because if you didn't act, the ennemies keep attacking. So I'm ok with that too.

What I'm not sure if I'm ok with it or not is Square said that will release the game as multiple part game ... So I guess it will be kinda like XIII-trilogy. First game will probably end up at Aeris death, release two at Hojo death and third release will be the open world portion until you choose to go into the crater. If they do like this, it will follow the original CD ending... but it will be three 80$+ games with tons of stupid DLC

I believe it's a ARPG because it will be more appealing to a wider audience. Having it this way introduces people new to the game and gives a nostalgia fix to the old geezers.

FFVII itself was already "dark and gritty". If anything, that was one of the reasons why it got so much mainstream attention. FFVII helped pave the way for the "dark and gritty" AAA games that dominate the video game industry today.

There were sad deaths in games before FFVII. But the way FFVII portrayed death was more believable/realistic than earlier games.

This guy speaks the truth. Final Fantasy 7 remake isn't being westernized, nothing about the spiky-haired bandboys holding swords bigger than themselves is western. The main complaint always was the turn-based brain-dead combat, random monster encounters forcing you to run in circles like an idiot, lack of any strategy that JRPGs always had.
