I'd have to say that MS does own the PC market at some degree since the majority of games are Windows based (I know that Mac is increasing theyre gaming compability, but its never gonna equal the Windows market). Sure you can play on your Linux PC, but most people have Windows as operating system, and as such, Microsoft does own the PC market.

Actually, Sony does have a stake. Sony Online Entertainment runs (ran?) several MMOs, like Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest, etc. I assume they're affiliated...

no, they dont.

pretty much every part of the computer is just as important as the OS if not more, if anybody "owns" the pc market, its ATI/Nvidia.

although MSs OS is the dominant OS for gamign on the PC, no one owns it. the PC is an open platform. anyone can make a game or a piece of hardware for it. theres no licencing fees and no special SDKs required. theres no restrictions in terms using the features od dirext x or any of that. hell i could use open gl if i didnt like direct X.

MS promote it because PC gaming doing well means windows does well. if alot of games started to support linux (and theres nothing legally that MS nor anyone else can do to stop that on PC) the Windows whould loose a big feather in its cap.

but no one owns it and no one controls it. it is both the PCs greatest srength and its greatest weakness but its fantastic to have it and to loose it would be a terrible tragedy for the industry. it still has the most inovative and daring devs and loads of new companies trying to make it big in the industry. It is the birth place of most of the major 3rd party devs in the west.

MS do not own the PC market. No one does since the hardware is not proprietary. MS talks about the PC market all the time because they are trying to woo game developers to Windows. Every year, MS loses more ground to other operating systems and they realise that, at the current time, the games market is probably the only software market on PCs that they have a complete stranglehold for. The conferences they do over and over again are to show developers that Microsoft is the only way to go when it comes to gaming on a PC. If tomorrow, they stopped promoting PC gaming, Steve Jobs might pop in and say "Hey devs! We're prepared to offer you a lot of support to make games compatible with the MAC! It'll even be easier because Macs have propriatary hardware and the most solid OS!" devs may just start making games for MACs, then it'll only be a short time before we have game developers for Linux and then suddenly, BAM! MS no longer has that stranglehold and people will actually think about what OS they want isntead of, like me, saying "Ah! I'll have to go with Windows, since Linux and Mac OS can't run any decent games"

No one owns pc gaming. Is an open platform where lots of company's they are involved either is software ( microsoft, valve, blizard and many more ) either is hardware ( intel, nvidia, ati, amd mainly but also companies like gigabyte, asus, msi, evga, xfx even logitech). The main reason microsoft talks and support gaming in Pc is because games on Pc is one of the main reasons that millions of people buying Windows instead of Linux (which is free) or Mac. Another reason is that microsoft from time to time realese games that sell quite good on pc's ( age of empire series, flight simulator )

Companies like Nvidia, Intel and other PC hardware manufacturers have more money invested in the PC industry than MS and their software. Nobody can "own" an open platform and am glad that MS's attempts at closing it and controlling it were dashed quickly.

You can argue that they own the platform that most PC gamers use. But it might not have been bought for gaming. THat copy of Xp you bought 9 years ago? still works today for games. MS hasn't made a dime off that for games recently. You decide if they "own it" or not.

The OS is really the only part of the hardware that games are exclusive too, but the PC is a open platform so consumers can buy other OS's if they want even though most of the other OS's dont offer nearly the same amount of games.

If Microsoft owns anything, it just owns the operating systems market (not really). What is a PC? A collection of Software and hardware. The hardware is hardly controlled by Microsoft. The software, Microsoft just collects what it gets from Windows sales and whatever other software they make, like Age of Empire games or Microsoft office. They don't collect royalties, they can't stop users from using google search, they can't stop developers from making their games run on Linux or Mac. They practically have 0 control. They want the PC to do well because more PC's = more Windows sold + more office+ more Visual Studio sold and more Microsoft games Sold and potential for Games for Windows and other stuff like silverlight. Also, since the PC market made them big, they have a sense of loyalty to the PC.

no one owns it. ms makes ZERO $$$ OFF PC GAMES windows costs less than 2 games and is a one off cost while with console every games and $10-$20 goes to ms/sony.

valve owns more of the pc market with steam than ms. gfwl just can't catch up to steam, it buggy as hell, costs money to get half the features of steam, runs inside games which is bad and make it slow compared to a seperate app.

Why does Sony not have a stake in the market considering they make pcs and laptops? :?

Yes MS makes an OS that developers make games for and there is probably some money they pay so that they can make the game on that OS (Not to sure about that) but most likely some licensing agreement to do so, but MS does not own these games, unless they published them all, which then they would have some sort of investment and control over what happens to the game.

No one pay GhostMLD any attention, he's just another 360 *You know what rider*, who praises 360 like he's Bill Gates mistress and owns shares in Microsoft and Microsofts VP is his dad, basically a 360 version of PS_John....

First of all, like Microsoft does with everything, Bill Gates STOLE the idea of Windows, and then got rich of it, isn't that like MS?A company built off ripping others ideas, no wonder they get special ed endorsers like Ghost who praise a system that breaks 95% of the time that supported a dead format and bribes all companies to go to sleep with their console because without that money paid no one would support it...

The only reason Windows is so popular because simply of its history, advertising and support, not to mention it's history....also, quantity does not equate to quality...

There is little doubt that MS and Windows rules the PC market, even with the issues with Vista, they will release an update, like they did with XP, and it will become "the best version of windows", xp had issues as well when it came out, it wasn't untill service pack 2 that is back somewhat stable

As for PC gaming, you don't think Microsoft has a significant stake in PC gaming, they have enough of a stake to make the PC and 360 intertwined, the development tools for 360 make it pretty easy to port the game to PC and vice versa, obviously

so I would say Microsoft has a very significant intrest in PC gaming, but like many have said, no one owns it, PC is a free and open platform

MS dominates the operating system market not the gaming one.
