Im not just speaking of GOW3, it has happened numerous times before and if it continues to happen then I think gamers are turning into a menace that will destroy the games industry!... OK maybe not that far but it I feel when gamers start to think 9 is no longer a great score then it is surely a cause for concern. I don't care if it's a successful franchise and expected to get extraordinary scores but realistically speaking no game in a franchise can get a 10, it would be lucky enough to get one.

Come on people lets not get stupid about this. An a 8 is a great score, a 9 is a fantastic score and a 10 is out of this world! Anything below an 8 then fare enough it's not good but a 9 cannot be considered bad by any standard. Oh and If 9's are common that doesn't mean games are boring it's the opposite, a lot of games are well worth a purchase and we should be happy that the games industry is churning out top quality games one after the other, not downplaying the score.

I hate how System Wars is generally only interested in AAAE games. If it's less than that, often people see it as not worth playing, which is outright ridiculous.

Yeah, I'd just like the fact that standards are always changing so a 9 compared to a game getting a 9 a year ago could signify that the game is perhaps even better!

I'm honestly a little bit disgusted that 8 isn't a good score anymore. These gamers today are so spoiled that they bat away games that get less than a 9, and throw a fit if they're favorite game gets an 8, because of course it "deserved teh 10!!1!!111"

The standards haven't changed.

It's just a few fanboy's trying to do anything, say anything to seek ownage.

Don't worry about it.:P

A 9 is still a 9 which is AAA. Pretty awesome.:P

I think it's more shock than anything else, people see OPM giving a flagship, uber, goty, super awesome, game of the gen type of game, PS3 exclusive like god of war a 9 and think.. WTF? If a biased mag could only give it a 9 what would other sites give it... and so on.

A perfect example for AA scores is Fable 2. It got AA from GS and people are like "lulz fable 2 sucks it got AA, that means it sucks"..

Exactly. OPM and OXM are both owned by the same parent company; they just decided to put out specialized magazines for each console. That doesn't mean that they're biased; only a fanboy would expect every OPM or OXM writer to also be a fanboy.

Not pointing fingers at body, Im sure most are guilty of this but when a Hyped game gets a 9 some usually feel it's nothing special as if only a 10 will make a game worth noticing.

You mean Bioshock, which many feel was GOTY caliber, COD4, which most people considered the best shooter of this generation upon release and some the best shooter of the decade, and Mass Effect 2, which is evidently the cat's meow? The problem is you're talking about HYPED games, i.e. games which are seen from the outset as capable of scoring AAA due to their massive development and marketing budgets and proven development staff. Why SHOULDN't we be kind of meh when BioWare or IW score a 9/10? It's pretty meh, bro. Nobody cares. Everyone plays them and everyone loves them because they're hot ****, but it's not like SW stops when a game merely meets its astronomical hype. This says nothing about AAA hype and more about what those developers and franchises mean to SW.

As far as I was concerned, GOW3 hype was AAAE. Which means so far it is a success. But I agree, 9 is an awesome score.

I'm happy with anythign 8.0 or higher, and then below that I become wary but I'm willing to check it out at a lower price. Lost Odyssey, one of my favorite games of the generation, was 7.5 here. And in comparison for the sake of scores I hated Killzone 2 which got a 9.

Shows how much bearing scores have on my taste.

People base it on the hype, if people are stupid enough to hype it like it's going to be the best games of all time then you'll get people that say stupid things like this as well. It's just System Wars though, I'll play pretty much anything that scores above a 5, as long as the reason it got a lower score wasn't down to it being broken, if a games fun a games fun no matter what the score is.

Something about that me laugh.

I get a game regardless of the score if I have an interest in it. I dont think I havent gotten a game under 4.0 though. If I have, it was when snes was around and I was too young to be looking up scores, and instead playing games that most people thought were horrid, but I loved :P

I hate how System Wars is generally only interested in AAAE games. If it's less than that, often people see it as not worth playing, which is outright ridiculous.

lundy86_4

I'm sure it's due to there being a lot of kids on this forum, and since most are probably still in high school and don't have a job they're limited to what they can purchase.

I suppose if a game they're looking forward to doesn't score AAAE it's harder for them to let go of those 65 dollars they've been holding on to.

lundy86_4

Pretty much this. If it is not one of the popular in crowd games that is at least AAA, then you are considered to have bad taste if you choose to buy it. Now, of course I like my share of the popular bandwagon games, but I also buy my fair share of low scoring games as well if they appeal to me. As long as I dig it, who cares what the number is beside it? If anything, I find that standards today are above that of simply playing a fun game, which is sad.

I originally loved System Wars because of its diversity for games. Lately, Ive figured out it has more to do with scores and numbers than anything else, and I just dont care for that. I too find it despicable that if a game gets an 8 people won't give it so much as a second look. I for one, am an advocate for a 1-10 scale, where if I hear 6, I think above average (Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood would be an example). When I hear 9, I want to think GOTY (Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, ect.), and 10's would obviously go to the lone game changers of the world i.e. Half Life or Early Zeldas. Its so bunched in in that 7-10 range that so many good games get lost because if its not at the tip top of the mountain, its not worth looking at. Spread it out a little.

I don't understand why a 7/10 is so bad? according gamespot a 7 = good game.

Lots of good games rated 7, that some people just won't play because of ignorantly high standards.

Respectfully disagree. To me it's really all about preference really. I use reviews (ACTUALLY READING WRITTEN ONES WITH UT SPOILERS) and their score as a general indication of whether a game is very good. IGN's Uncharted 1 review convinced me to buy a game that I saw as 8.0 on GameSpot. I had no idea it was that special of game in terms of cinematic experience compared to other games for its time. I think the lack of information, not playing Jak and Daxter games on the PS2, the low hype, and GameSpot's score made me overlook the game.

That same magazine gave GOW1 a 6 and GOW2 a 8 so by there standards for a magazine that never liked GoW thats a great score. Also note it was the OPM UK. The american version will probably give it a 10 .

numerical scores are only pertinent to mouthbreathers who cant be bothered to actually read something of substance, but you cant blame them since the average game review has none.

however, here gamespot scores are law. the system with the most high scoring games wins. i doubt anybody honestly only cares about AAA games, thats obviously an exaggeration thats not even worth discussing. but for the purposes of this forum they are the most important. regardless of the mistake a lot of people make, this isnt a general discussion forum, its a competitive 'debate' (lol) over what system is best, and the AAAE titles tend to drive the point home best.

imo a 7/10 is still a good score, one game on steam called "Cryostasis" has a metacritic score of 69, but i bought it anyways and it easily has some of the best atmosphere in a game i've played in a long time, certainly more atmosphere than even Bioshock

but the problem is you're asking in the system wars forum, where people are bound to judge scores not based on quality but on whether games meet what they're hyped to be or not, so on system wars anything below a 10 is ****

The problem with SW in a nut shell is that the vast majority no longer want to debate about the actual merits of the games, instead it all comes down to;

  1. Whether or not it's AAAe
  2. Whether it flops or not
  3. Sales
  4. Graphics

Rarely is there any topics on what exactly makes the game good or exactly why "Insert Game here" is actually better than another. People are instead obsessed with numbers and having the best stats on the spread sheet.

I know a couple people like that. They think if it's under a 9, it's a flop. I feel anything 7 and above warrants my attention. I've played games under 7 before if I think I'll be interested in it.

That same magazine gave GOW1 a 6 and GOW2 a 8 so by there standards for a magazine that never liked GoW thats a great score. Also note it was the OPM UK. The american version will probably give it a 10 .

I should have said perceived as bias. But doesn't change my statement.

Pretty much, if it's not perfect, it's not worth existing.

The fact that PDZ is as much of a AAAE as Halo3,UC2,Gears2,LBP, etc., should be enough to dismiss this silly grading scale.
