Doom 3 is responsible for killing a huge part of the gaming community by making publishers take the cheap road down graphics lane.

There is a reason why Counterstrike 1 is better then Source, even though it's painful to your eyes. It's cause the gameplay is flawless.

But Doom 3? The gameplay was terrible, the pistol sounded like a dartgun and you had to switch hands for your flashlight. Then these horrible games like Lair followed in Doom 3's footsteps, and more bad games with good graphics, like Quake 4, and Gears of War.

Gears of War was different though, they used a different art direction with skilled artists. So..that doesn't count, plus the gameplay wasn't bad.

But you get my point

Gears of war was the same. The main thing that awed people about the game was the graphics. Also If I remember correctly doom 3 didn't score as well as people thought it would and that lair flopped horribly.

Other than GeOW those games flopped, so I don't quite see where you're getting at.

Either you're young, or you're kidding yourself.

The graphics "Craze" was around ages, ages before Doom 3.

Not exactly, Quake 4 got an 8.5 on GS? and Doom 3 like 8.5?

doom 3 was hardly the first game to push graphics over gameplay. and i thought doom 3 was okay.

I think gears 2 is a game where graphics are celebrated over gameplay far too much. its a solid shooter, but if you look at the reviews they all said "no real story, basically the same as the last game, multiplayer the same... but so pretty". SERIOUSLY... any other game would get penalised... but gears is allowed to be generic, simply because it is gears.

I don't think you understood the expectations people had of doom 3.

Dude, flashlight thing gave some kind of charm to Doom III. For some people it was annoying, for sure, but IMO, it was a great decision.

Then again, thanks to modding community, someone ductaped flaslight to weapons.

Doom III was great. Quake 4 was crap. Gears of War was crap.

But if you ask me, Far Cry actually enforced the graphics craze a bit more. Hell, that game even today looks pretty good.

See the problem with Doom 3 was that it was a tech demo and the same year it came out there were 2 other games that either matched it or surpasses it technically.

2004 brought Doom 3 (Id Tech 4), Far Cry (CryEngine) , and Half Life 2 (Source)

3 engines that were powerhouses for their time. The only thing was that Far Cry and HL2 didn't feel like tech demos.

I don't like D3 at all, but don't blame it for the graphics craze.

You'd be right... if you weren't ignoring the decade before Doom 3 when pretty but dumb games still came out every so often. For example, play the original Unreal and get back to me.

Oh, and Doom 3 was great (and, looking at the reviews, many people agree). Hating on Doom 3 is soooo 2004.

the original farcry was very good. it had graphics but it also had a semi open world and good AI (for the time). Farcry was not just about graphics.

I agree, although Far Cry definitely had the most impact on me since it came out months before Doom3 or HL2. But to be fair, I found HL2 to have a lot of boring/dumb physics puzzles, giving it a tech demo feeling as well.

Nobody I knew during the n64 days was waiting for the next pokemon game and saying "Better Graphics or I ain't buying it." Doom 3 sparked that type of attitude and it's sickening.

I'm not saying all Far Cry had was graphics. It offered really great gameplay. But if you look at it back then, it made the same thing Crysis did now. There was no game that could compare to Far Cry, graphically.

Your in the minority about HL2 (nothing wrong with that though). It had its faults but IMO it never felt like a tech demo.

Quake 4 was awesome. it was a simple run & gun shooter, and the last of it's kind, sadly. Nothing will ever capture my attention as much as mindless run & gun shooters...

I don't see why Gears was exempt from most of the criticism as I found it amazingly boring while I found Doom 3 to be quite atmospheric. The again, I only downloaded the Doom 3 demo.

Doom 3 was a huge dissapointment, I remember it perfectly. 2004 was actually a depressing time in gaming history, with the inclusion of WoW and other bad games.

Flashlight was part of gameplay, and it was implemented great.

You enter dark room, you cant see a thing under your nose, than you switch to your FL- scan area fast and see some crazy monster just few steps in front of you

You switch back in panic to your weapon and shoot blind in front of you, only light of gunfire shows if your enemy is still alive (and of course, creepy sound) - and you dont know whats behind you , whats left or right - so you switch back to flashlight, praying that you are alone

Doom have awesome gameplay, its because doom is one of "old school" games,so it have simple gameplay controls like CS but incredible graphics

I don't know what you're getting at but the graphics craze was around long before doom3... simple fact is people like to look at pretty things.

Doom 3 (IMO) wasn't that bad either....

Anyone who remembers back to when Unreal was released (4-5 years of development), finally released in 97/98. That was the last game since Crysis that made everyone literally go wow, and NOBODIES computer handled it well at all unless you had a P2 MMX, 128mb, and a Voodoo 2/SLI setup. Back then that was the defacto high end PC.

Unreal was a very good game though. WAY better then Unreal 2...bleh...

the only part i can agree with your post, but its called counter strike 1.6, but goddamn is that game a masterpiece of an online shooter, ive been really back into it recently, plus its not really "painful" to ur eyes at all especially when forcing 16xAF, 16xAA, supersampling through nvidia control panel, ur just too much of a graphics whore
