Dragon Age: Inquisition

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Next year is going to be the year of the WRPG as the third installments in what have flat out becomes the key combatants to the WRPG throne- The Witcher series and the Dragon Age series- both debut their third installments. Both games are generating some great hype, with Dragon Age: Inquisition looking like a return to form for the series after the disappointing Dragon Age II, and The Witcher 3 looking to build on the incredible strengths of The Witcher 2.

Of the two games though, which looks better right now? Which do you think will end up being better? Which will be received better, and which one do you think will you like more?

Dragon Age: Origins was a better game than The Witcher. Not by the same margin that The Witcher 2 clowned Dragon Age II, but overall, in terms of a face off, both have won one round each. Of course, I do think The Witcher 3 looks like the better game without question, but I think most people forget just how great Origins was because of Dragon Age II.

I don't like the Witcher too much. On the other hand I do like Dragon Age Origins (haven't played 2). So I'll go with that (I know I'm in the minority).

Except for the combat, I think Origins did pretty much everything better than the first Witcher. And it's not like the first Witcher had some great combat either.

Only if you are a closet mmo fan. And enjoy repetitive ecnoutners where you can pull of the same strategy in every fight and still win.

That and The Witcher had a better morality system, more meaningful choices, and better encounter designs. Both games love wasting someones time with padding, but there are actual likeable things about The Witcher.

Dragon Age Origins's best qualities are that Shale and Morrigan are likeable. Beyond that it's generic as hell fantasy, with a number crunching battle system that makes diablo look engaging, and some of the worst level design even for a Bioware game(and they have some noteworthy bad level design on their track record).

It's not so much as I think The Witcher is that good(it's more like kind of good), as much as Dragon Age just sucks. The fact that some people say it's a modern day successor to Baldur's Gate is insulting to Baldur's Gate, because dated as 2 is that's still a fun game.

When it comes to gameplay I have to agree. The Witcher has a better world, more interesting story (imo) and better characters/dialog (a lot will disagree with this, but in DA:O everything was so cliche and boring), but DA had the upper hand in gameplay and RPG mechanics. I think it's really awesome DA:Inquisition is using the frostbite engine because DA:O was ugly as f*ck to look at.

I'm not going to argue with you about this. I know you dislike the game immensely. And I like the game immensely, in spite of hating MMOs. I disagree with your assessments, incidentally; The Witcher had a better story, because it had better source material to draw from. It had great characterization for ONE character, and poor characterization for the rest of them, next to Origins' good average to good (at best) characterization for all characters. Enemy design was roughly the same, choices and consequences cannot be compared because of how differently both games handled the system, and I think Origins had better quest design except for the Godawful Fade.

TW3 It's kind of unfair since CDPR has such amazing source material, but there is no question which game will have better lore, story, and characters. Once we see proper gameplay to back up CDPR's promises I think we'll be looking at RPG of the year for 2014

Again, morality and choice can't be compared across both games; Origins eschewed traditional morality to go for a character appeasement based system. It works, it just works on a completely different level than The Witcher's morality system. The two cannot be meaningfully compared. Origins had shit level design, but The Witcher wasn't better either; I think, barring The Fade, Origins actually edges The Witcher out. Combat yes, I agree, The Witcher did better; then again, Dragon Age did atmosphere better, and it did non combat role playing elements much better.

First 3 hours if you ask me.

DAO was shaping up to be a good game for the first 3 hours or so until it became the embodiment of what I hate about BioWare games and fantasy stories.

I think they're both going to be great, and in different ways.

I'm probably going to like Dragon Age:Inquisition a lot more for the game mechanics (love tactical party based combat) and the character development, but Witcher 3 will definitely take the cake in terms of immersion, graphics and narrative.

They didn't have the proper shaders in the Witcher 3 Engine at the time so it was still using Witcher 2 engine shaders.

Origins for me is better than The Witcher, but W3 vs DA:I is no contest in favor of W3.

Traditional Fallouts, infinity engine games and KOTOR 2 among others, have spoiled me far too much with the importance of a morality system, so personally if Bioware continues this trend of "Good vs Evil period" The W3 may win solely on that,

Actions and consequences are crucial to me in an RPG.

Yeah, Inquisition looks like them trying to go back to what made Origins great while still trying to pander to the crowd they tried to appeal to with Dragon Age II. We'll see.

As it stands, by far Witcher 3. I am liking how DA:I is shaping up to be however, it sounds like BW's most ambitious game in a while, which I appreciate. But need to read a lot more and see a lot of gameplay before I'm sold.

I loved The Witcher 1, but the presentation and gameplay elements were far more complete in Origins. The Witcher 1 does not hold up at all and the combat was pretty broken at times.

Eh, even the 2 sucked attitude is a bit on the hipster attitude side of things. Was it a great game? No. Did it get anywhere near meeting its expectations set by origins? Not even close. Was it a bad game? No. I'd say 2 did more to show how good Origins was rather than being horrible on its own merit.

Man, I'm no hipster or Bioware hater (the two most vocal anti Dragon Age groups on this board), but Dragon Age II was awful. Maybe it was my expectations, I adored Dragon Age Origins, I felt it was one of the greatest RPGs I had played, and I expected its sequel to carry out the tradition of that same classic hardcore RPGing, but it just was, as far as I am concerned, a supreme disappointment and a legitimately bad game. The only things I will give II are, ironically, the things that Origins did so badly- the combat, the story, and the characterization.

No, but we have had a full Game Informer article for it, a launch trailer, and loads of snippets of information from Bioware; compare this to the comparable Game Informer article for Witcher 3, launch trailer, and snippets of information from CDPR. The Witcher 3 still seems immensely better than DA:I, maybe because Inquisition has the shadow of II over it, but TW3 just looks better for now.

The difference, just technically speaking, is going to stem from the Witcher not attempting to bridge the gap between current gen and next gen. Doing so limits the capabilities of the new consoles, and sort of defeats the purpose of even having them on there outside of better visuals.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"] Yeah, regardless of the question of Origins vs The Witcher, Wild Hunt looks soooo much better than Inquisition.charizard1605

We haven't seen anything meaningful from Inquisition yet.

I think people ejaculating and drooling over TW3 at E3 is confirmation enough. I haven't seen so many people blown away by a game, and I mean real blown away, not fake Titanfall hype.

I go crazy waiting for the Gamescom gameplay reveal!

[QUOTE="lx_theo"][QUOTE="charizard1605"] Right? Origins was such an incredible game. Admittedly II sucked, and Inquisition looks like it *will* be outdone by Witcher 3, but that doesn't change that Origins was a great game.charizard1605

I agree with theo's assesment of DA2. Good game on it's own but crap as a sequel to DA: O.

It's hard because the core gameplay is pretty different. I'll always favour team-based RPGs over solo RPGs (especially where story is important), so by that alone I may prefer DA:I more. I probably have more characters I care to see again in DA than in TW. I did however think TW2 was massively awesome and way better than TW1.The best parts for TW2 for me though was when there was someone running around with you. I loved Act 1, but it kinda petered out in Act 2 and then Act 3 just ended too quickly. Too many mundane side-quests I think in Act 2. While DA games have mundane side-quests too, having a party tag along livens things up. Overall though, with Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3 coming out, it'll be a bloody awesome year.
