Get ready for another epic role playing game coming to 3DS. Many like myself are probably still playing Dragon Quest VII on 3DS so the delay was a refreshing announcement back when they did so. The new release date for Jan. 20 2017 fits in pretty well to get the game out before Dragon Quest XI.

The series is some of the best gameplay and story telling in role playing games, so if you like these types, check it out, its a journey you wont want to miss. The Remake features many changes such as 2 new playable characters, more side quests, and battling on the go.

"The story begins when a jester, Dhoulmagus, comes to Castle Trodain and steals the King’s sceptre. He then uses its power to turn his majesty into a troll, the Princess into a horse and the castle inhabitants into plants. The only one left unscathed from this attack is a castle guard who escaped the curse and must now step up to save the kingdom he’s sworn to protect. Only by traveling the lands, recruiting allies and following the trail of destruction that Dhoulmagus leaves in his wake will The Hero be able to retrieve the sceptre in order to restore Trodain back to its former glory."

Key Features include,

  • Full story voice acting
  • New Quick Save Function
  • 2 new playable characters
  • New Side Quests
  • "Speed Up" feature for quicker battles
  • Can take photos outside of battles and cutscenes at any time
  • Poses, stickers, and frames for photos taken
  • Can unlock Cameron’s Codex were youll be rewarded for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters and situations.

Also, images can be saved to the SD card and shared to other DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King owners via the StreetPass feature. Once the photos have been shared, other players can give them a thumbs up, and the more of these the image earns, the higher the chance of receiving a new item.

Is Drago Quest VIII as long as DQVII?

I'm enjoying DQVII for the most part but goddamn this game and it's length and pacing at times...

@DJ-Lafleur: Its much shorter. But yeah, Dragon Quest VII is i think the longest game ive ever played lol. Someone told me they did speed run under 10 hours, i was like, yeah right, cool story bro.

The cool thing with them is even though theyre long, the news ones are easy to put down and pick back up. They have systems that help you pick up where you left off easily.

Its not like most role playing games where if you take a long break you like totally forget where you are and what you have to do.

Nope. My body isn't ready for this, my very last 3DS purchase will be Pokemon: Sun/Moon and will focus all my attention to Nintendo Switch.

Well that's good then.

I will say what's making the game's pacing/length a bit more bearable is that all the story stuff and different scenarios are actually kind of interesting and I'm always interesting to see how things turn out on each Island, so there's that.

Was thinking about getting DQ7. Is that a good one to get into the series with? Is 8 better? If so, I can wait for that..

Heads up, Visual comparison of the 3DS version vs the PS2 version:

Loading Video...

Also, It doesnt feature the orchestral soundtrack of the English PS2 release. The symphonic score uses a MIDI rendition of the orchestral soundtrack. It is different from the OG PS2 Japanese release. It's apparently not as bad as it sounds if you just play using the 3DS speakers.

Supposedly they've done some censoring on Red and some of Jessica's outfits, covering up some skin. A few somewhat adult undertones have been changed also to reflect this.

Wow, the text on the 3DS version is completely unreadable.

I'll be getting it. Hopefully I'll have beaten VII by then.

@Litchie: Having played *most* of the main line games, I'd say your best bet to get a feel for the series is either IV or V. I'm enjoying VII a lot right now, but it's incredibly long and dense (I've heard it takes some people around 100 hours to beat it). It's also paced oddly at times, which can be a huge turn off for people not accustomed to the series quirks. IV and V are generally much more user friendly.

My personal favorite (and the one I started with) is IX, mostly for its sheer breadth of content and addictive post game loop (I have more than 150 hours on it and still have a lot left to do, although the main story isn't terribly long for most... it took me 50 hours but I REALLY took my time).

As a frame of reference, the only main games in the series I haven't played are II, III, VIII, and X, although that not never got localized so it barely counts.

@joebones5000: You can beat the game pretty quick though. Just skip all the side stuff.

Dragon Quest IX would be best, than VIII, then VII imo.

I've been wanting to play the games myself. Even though I doubt they're connected, I still have a desire to go through the series from the start.

Outside a few references, I'm fairly certain that they're all entirely their own thing. If you do play from the beginning, know that the first, while still a surprisingly solid game, definitely shows its age in more ways than one.
