vs.

Final Fantasy is known for its innovation and different gameplay per release and the graphics.
Dragon Quest on the other hand is all about old school RPGs, simple stories, and sticking to tradition.

So what series do you prefer and why?

I choose FF because it's much more interesting and is a lot more pleasing to look at.

Final Fantasy by a very small margain. The only reason I say Final Fantasy is because of Final Fantasy VIII. Best JRPG ever.

Well i havent played any DQ games so its definately FF. Although from what i've heard about the series, i would still prefer FF.

Which reminds me, i need to get DQ8 soon. Going to go scout around for it.

Pretty sure FF is going to win here, but I've always preferred the DQ franchise.

If you wouldve asked me a month ago I wouldve said FF, easily.... but after playing a few more DQ games Im not too sure.

While their stories arent quite up to par with FF their level design, gameplay and challenge are fantastic.

Its a tie as of now to me.

Both are good franchises, but I'll have to go with Final Fantasy. I prefer story based RPG's and I often found the DQ series lacking in the story department also there hasn't been much improvement to gameplay IMO.

Interesting, i think FFVIII is the worst numbered FF .

The only DQ game i have played is 8, and that didn't appeal to me.

Considering that FF9 is my favourite game, and FF4 is my favourite snes era game. I'll go with final fantasy.

Overall I'd go for FF because of the differences in difficulties, not saying that DQ is bad though, DQ VII is one of my favorite FPGs.

Well they certainly aren't for everyone. And I kinda liked Dirge of Cerebeus...it was...alright. I'd say the worst one would be Crystal Chronicles on the GC. I truly believed the game could go on forever, I didn't seem to ever approach an end.

You've never played FF: Mystic Quest. It was my first taste of FF and the reason why I never touched another one until FF7.

I don't think VIII is bad at all. But I think it's better to have at least played all the FFs before forming an opinion on the worst one.

Final Fantasy has much more world wide appeal than Dragon Quest (in fact, it's one of the rare games that sell over a million in each territory) Is the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series bad? Does that mean FFCC: Crystal Bearers won't be... As good as expected?

FF, specially after DQ VIII. That was a pretty stale, straightforward lvl grind fest.

Between the two I prefer the Final Fantasy series more... can't remember the last time I played a Dragon Quest game to be honest maybe Dragon Quest VIII but not too sure though. I can't seem to get into the Dragon Quest story for some reason and I didn't like the art and music that was there in Dragon Quest VIII either. On the other hand I haven't really enjoy a Final Fantasy since FFX made it dubte on the PS2 so at the moment Final Fantasy has a slight edge over Dragon Quest.

It goes without saying, but you pretty much can't compare the two. They're both different.

Dragon Quest: This series pretty much appeals to all veteran gamers who shaped up what a niche rpg is. Being difficult and requiring lots of strategy and level grinding. And some might enjoy the familiarity that it has. As in, the stagnant, repetitive gameplay that's destroying the game industry (but hey, that part's just what I feel). DQ 8 looked really nice though.

Final Fantasy: Fun games, different, and the installments have something for everyone, so you're bound to like one. Keeping in mind that they're video games, sure they don't have a story for the mindset of a 20+ year old and sure some of the similar themes, as with all Japanese games, tend to be slightly vexing. But there's no denying that you can enjoy the accessibility that the games provide and just general production values (after all, they are video games, an unstable medium)

If Dragon Quest fixed a few issues, I would have liked the series. But hey it's not for me, and kudos for Square Enix who continue to make the games hard and have horrible gameplay designs instead of succumbing to the complaints of gamers.

But for now, I'm sticking to the 10 Final Fantasies of which I enjoyed most out of.

Though it is a fair question, it's difficult to answer.

Dragon Quest gives me an irreplaceable old-school fix that i desperately look forward to.

Final Fantasy gives me graphics like none other. Usually fun battle, and ability systems. Buth honestly, I haven't enjoyed a FF storyline or character spread since VIII.

If FFXIII and DQX and sitting next to eachother on the shelf I'm taking...*takes 5 mins to answer*...

Dragon Quest (i think)

Final Fantasy, I guess it would be obvious from my sig, though the FF series isn't my favorite overall anyway.. DQ games are awesome for being all old school, but when it comes to evolving the genre and having each title being more unique, FF wins for me in that regard. DQ8 had its awesome british accent charms and a great supporting cast, but I'm not looking forward to a completely silent party in DQ9. :(

Why do you seem on a mission to stomp to death the last of the console turn-based RPGs?
"Stale and stagnant gameplay that's killing the industry"
What u talking about? You're talking like console RPG fans are being swamped to death with turn-based RPG's, when in fact we're starving.
In the last 5 years turn-based RPG's have been extremely few and far between on consoles.

If you haven't even played DQ VIII, then you've got nothing important to say.

I've just played some of the earlier Dragon Quests, and they're far superior to any of the Final Fantasies released after the SNES, I think.

Melodrama? Nope. Teenage angst? Nope. Riduculous, inane love interests? God, no. Unintentionally hilarious character development and absurd plot twists? It sounds too good to be true after playing X, XII and all of the DS Final Fantasies.

I can't say I enjoy hypocrisy at it's finest. I don't think I made mention of the fact that I want turn-based rpg's to die. One of my favorite wishes is for Golden Sun 1 & 2 to be remade on the DS before Nintendo have that new one out. Do you perchance have any insight concerning the points I raised up?

I also don't know where that whole second part of your argument is coming from, and what it has to do with my post. I will say this though: if a company is able to make a turn based game with real-time battles (as in no more loading battle screens) then I certainly would enjoy it. You also have plenty strategy rpg's which prove to be enjoyable for those who like the genre.

I find myself having to level grind too much in DQ to enjoy the game. I usually play RPGs because I like the story, not because I really enjoy going through millions of random battles so my characters are leveled enough to beat the next boss.
