It goes without saying, but you pretty much can't compare the two. They're both different.
Dragon Quest: This series pretty much appeals to all veteran gamers who shaped up what a niche rpg is. Being difficult and requiring lots of strategy and level grinding. And some might enjoy the familiarity that it has. As in, the stagnant, repetitive gameplay that's destroying the game industry (but hey, that part's just what I feel). DQ 8 looked really nice though.
Final Fantasy: Fun games, different, and the installments have something for everyone, so you're bound to like one. Keeping in mind that they're video games, sure they don't have a story for the mindset of a 20+ year old and sure some of the similar themes, as with all Japanese games, tend to be slightly vexing. But there's no denying that you can enjoy the accessibility that the games provide and just general production values (after all, they are video games, an unstable medium)
If Dragon Quest fixed a few issues, I would have liked the series. But hey it's not for me, and kudos for Square Enix who continue to make the games hard and have horrible gameplay designs instead of succumbing to the complaints of gamers.
But for now, I'm sticking to the 10 Final Fantasies of which I enjoyed most out of.
