Anyone remember this thing?

Just today I remembered how awesome the Dreamcast memory card was. It animated differently depending on the game you were playing. I could look down when I was playing Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic would be running around and doing his spin attack. You could also unlock little mini games on the memory card once data was saved from certain games. What a useless/stupid/genius idea.

The Dreamcast was a total winner, in theory. It's really sad it didn't have a chance to untap its potential.

I remembered how awesome the Dreamcast memory card was. NAPK1NS

Not only the memory card, but the console generally was the best on the market, and has yet to be beaten.

Since we're talking about Sony here, I'm going to go ahead and guess it came before the PocketStation Memorycard.

:P I kid I kid...

Yeah the VMU and really just the Dreamcast in general was truely awsome. I remember taking my VMU to school to battle Chao's from Sonic with my friends. Good times.

So the idea of backing up your game data on a removable device is a BAD thing in your eyes?

In your perfect world a console fails and all of the users data is gone?

The memory card was beyond awesome. However I was upset on how many credits NFL2k1 took. I wasn't able to save on any other game. :(

So, who cares about that. Sonic sucked so you'd rather look at a memory stick.

As for mini games, that just turns it into a crap gameboy.

"VMU" Virtual Memory Unit. I remember 2k sports were going to put the playbook on the memory card to prevent the other players from looking at the plays on screen. Sadly, Dreamcast was done before they could implement it.

Why even post? The DC was an amazing system and if there were less fanboys back then, it would have been a success. People just waited for the PS2 even though the DC was a great system with amazing games from day one!

The origina Sonic Adventure on the DC was one of the best Sonic games of all time. The VMU let you play your games on the go. Great idea.

HDD's are superior. Without them, there is a lack of space for downloadable demos, there are no patches, no updates, an insufficent space for media. That would make Next-Gen seem a little more Last-Gen, wouldn't it?

Plus, Next-Gen systems WORK with Popular Removable Drives on the market, and theyre a much more logical and afforable method of storing data as opposed to a propietory, inferior, expensive Memory Card.

It was a good idea in theory but having to replace it with a unusual type of battery was a pain. As a modern day idea it would't be bad if it could charge through the controller. It would be very easy to have a full colour higher res VM type card with a lot of memory space. Even the idea of having a screen built in is pretty good. But this was hardly ever used well on the DC. I remember RC:Code Veronica used it pretty well but most games didn't take advantage at all.

That's not true. Sony released the PocketStation in Japan sometime in 1998.

Man, I miss the Dreamcast

Best console made IMO.

Sweet, the VMU brings back memories, I remember I had like 2 of them. Couldn't hold memory though. PSO took up like a whole VMU.

Ahhh the good times.

I like memory cards, it's nice to be able to take my Gamertag and saves to friends houses and play on their 360s with my character rather than a new one.

It was great being able to manage and swap your saves with other people without even having to at a console, just stick them together and you were away. I had Snake on mine (can't remember which game i got that from) but I played it loads.

I am STUNNED that none of the new consoles have used this same style of memory card. Having a little screen on the controller was freakin' sweet. If you can ignore the crappy battery life and somewhat low capacity, these were as good as it gets.

Maybe next-gen :( At least give us a little screen on the controllers or something. I mean come on, that's so darn obvious!

Dreamcast... next-gen before next-gen was.
