PSP if you're interested in media (movies, photos, and the internet) or DS if you want something simple.
Personally, I would go for the PSP since Daxtar pwns. :D
At this point I would say PSP, I own both.
The DS has everything I was waiting for. Nothing in the horizon. (In my opinion)
PSP has redesign, 2 final fantasies. (Tactics and Crisis Core).
At this point I enjoy the PSP more. But both are great system IMO.

I wholeheartedly disagree that the DS has nothing on the horizon. LoZ: PH, Contra 4, Dragon Quest IX and Ninja Gaiden DS are the really big ones for me.
DS
Mario Kart DS,New Super Mario Bros,Yoshis Island DS, Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure and Zelda is coming out soon as well.

Yeah but those are kiddy games though...the DS's best titles aren't appealing to many above 10 years old.
I just got the new silver psp slim daxter pack last week and I love it, daxter is a VERY great game. Plus withthe PSP you can do a lot more such as music, pictures, videos, and movies. I like realistic sports, racing, andaction games plusthe PSP offers much better3d graphics and has a much bigger screen. I have no regrets buying my psp slim over the DS lite.

So you dismiss some of the best DS games as kiddy, and then use Daxter as an example for the PSP!?!? Get your head out of your backside.
I am no longer a slave to the rules of SystemWars
I Live in the real world where the winner of a generation is decided by market share
I Live in the real world where games like Zelda:TP/Metriod Prime 3 are considered AAA games
I go by Gamerankings scores and not Gamespots
When talking to me, If you go by any non Gamerankings score it will be ignored.
When talking to me, Saying that a console won due to having the best games, will be ignored
You can only claim official ownage over me using logic and not SW rules.
your a nintendo fanboy. but i agree will all those except the second to last one. games make the system.
The devices offer quite different things. If you really see yourself enjoying games and other features on both devices then it may be best to get both.
I wanted a mp3 player, a jump drive, a portable gaming system, and I hoped for a portable browser. So the psp was really the natural selection for me. Also, it offered me the closest to a console experience I could get on a portable. The lack of that is one reason I have stayed away from handhelds.
So perhaps if you share any of those wants, then you may find the psp interesting.

Sure, games make the system, but having games on the system in the first place is a direct result of people buying that system, thus giving the developer a market for making those games. The bigger the market, the more games that will most likely be released, and the more games released, the better the chance of good games. So games do make a system, but sales first and foremost will usually determine what system.
And by the way, I'm just about the furthest thing from a fanboy you can find; I had completely given up on Nintendo until I got a DS back in early 2006, the PS2 is, IMO, still the best console available, I think the best gaming platform has and always will be the PC, and that the Wii has the best potential of any of the new systems.
I also think blindly following a corporation is a terrible thing to do and opens up situations like the general acceptance of the Xbox 360's abysmal hardware failure rates when there should be outrage and repercussions against the company. I do think the Wii has the best potential of the new consoles due to the controller, but people should be demanding better games from the 3rd parties. Nintendo should be listening and be a bit more selective of what they slap that quality seal of theirs on. And the PS3 is just an overpriced monstrosity that Sony's blantanty used to shoehorn their own proprietary format into the market, not to mention that lovely bait-and-switch they pulled with their "price drop". An extra 100 bucks for 20 gigs more space and no EE??? Come on, I could buy a 500 gig HDD for that extra price.
There was a time when I thought I'd eventualyl get the DS..
but that time has come and gone, I bought a psp slim. It knocks the socks off the DS. Not only is it cool before you even turn it on, it's much, much cooler after. This tiny little machine can do EVERYTHING consoles can do and it's all portable. If you're looking for a toy, get the DS, if you're looking for a system, get the psp.

Why do I want a portable PS2?
well the psp'sthree best games have been ported to the ps2 (GTA:lcs, GTA:vcs, syphon filter) so if have a ps2 you wouldn't be missing out on much, all i can think of is MGS:PO, god of warand daxter for really good psp exclusives.
ds has:
mariokart ds
elite beat agents
yoshis island
animal crossing
new super mario bros
pokemon d/p
sonic rush

ninja gaiden dragon sword
kirby canvas curse
pheonix wright (theres heaps of em)
hotel dusk
sonic rpg (developed by bioware  )
etc etc too many to mention, just get a ds
Don't ask, decide for yourself. I could say go buy 100 coffees and should you? Its just bad idea to base it on forums or others.
