When this game was released everyone took a huge dump on it because it didn't feel "old school" - it resoundingly became one of the most hated FPS of modern age.

What made Duke Nukem 3D stand out?

  • Interaction
  • Humor
  • Fourth Wall Breaking
  • Great level design

What does Duke Nukem Forever have?

  • Interaction
  • Humor
  • Fourth Wall Breaking

- Modern level design, two weapons, health regen, checkpoints (not as prolific as TNO)

When this game came out - it was praised, some stating "the best fps in years".

  • Checkpoints
  • Barrage of movies
  • Objective markers
  • Simply pressing "x" in a series of linear, ordered sequences, for a scripted sequence
  • Chest high walls that can't be jumped and 2 foot drops with instant death
  • Obnoxious screen effects
  • Sequences in which "forward" is the only interaction
  • Cliche Hollywood story that takes itself way too seriously, it's not fucking Schindlers List
  • Stealth that involves practically all enemies standing facing away from you just waiting to be slaughtered
  • Melee fights that are scripted sequences
  • Constantly removing the players weapons

Not claiming Duke Nukem: Forever is a great game - but what are people on?

Duke Nukem 3D would have been debatable, but TNO is far superior of a shooter than DNF.

TNO may have been casualized and consolized, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a much better game than DNF.

I waited until New Order was $25 before I decided to give it a shot, it was fun but wasn't great. I'd be sour about it though if I would have paid more than that. The real overrated stinker though wasn't New Order, but it was Old Blood.

Anyhow, I had no desire to play Duke Nukem Forever for a while, I hated Gearbox for screwing up the Colonial Marines project. I'd rather just play classic Duke Nukem if they ever released it on Xbox One BC, had it on Xbox 360 I think (pretty sure).

But maybe now I wouldn't mind trying Duke Nukem Forever if it ever showed up on BC and I found it on sale.

@uninspiredcup: Hypocrite? What? DNF is onbjectively inferior than TNO. Not saying TNO was a super great game, but DNF is just that crappy. Bad humour, bad level design, two weapon max limit, stupid A.I., need I go on??? And lol, TB.

@uninspiredcup: I don't remember the controls being taken away very often, play Advanced Warfare if you want to see a fps that has that problem in spades.

I got Duke Nukem Forever for two bucks and...it's not too shabby. It feels like a fun little old school throwback.

People didn't like Duke Nukem Forever cause it's a bad game that people thought would be better then it was considering it had 12 years of development. And frankly if something is stuck in a 12 year development then one would assume it'll be quality.

In comparison The New World order was alot more polished and had much more effort put into it then Duke Nukem Forever did. Not perfect, but alot better then DNF. Frankly Duke Nukem Forever feels more like Did Not Finish.

This is another good point actually. Aside from it being totally unpolished, with terrible controls, unoptimization and lack of graphic options - essenailly just dumped on the pc...

....Duke Nukem: Forever was criticized for it's graphics - Even tweaking the game for 8k textures, forcing MSAA with nvidias MFAA TNO, looks like a PS3/Xbox360 game.

BTW - as those of you have played it are aware, in this uninterrupted sequence, the player walks around with coffee tray then sits for 10 minutes doing nothing.

Maybe TotalBiscuit didn't play it properly, either way, absolutely disgusting.

Yeah, he did play it wrong.

That scene in the train was pretty quick for me, you gotta bring them the coffee/tea (been awhile since I played it) and a cutscene happens

don't recall any delays or sitting there for "10 minutes"

In many ways this thread is comparable to Galileo and the Inquisition.

I should be deeply applauded -I put myself out there in the face of opposition with objective analysis - while detractors living under an umbrella of hypocrisy opted to ignore any arguments sticking to favorable rhetoric, simply character assassinating the source, which is utterly contemptuous and aberrant.

Mr Pitchford deserves an apology.

@uninspiredcup: No you don't deserve applause for your assessment of these games or what constitutes "old school" or hardcore or a better game. I played TNO it was fun. I wasn't interested in DNF before a review of it ever came out. You haven't made me interested with this thread.

I completed Duke Nukem Forever but gave up on NWO long before completion but I'd still say DNF was a crap game. The only good thing it had going for it was Gearbox kept Duke's attitude and sense of humour intact.

In short though they are both bad games.

What people need to remember is that, Duke Nukem is a game from another time though. Back when it was first supposed to come out, FPS games were a little different to what they are now. They were blockier, tighter, the controls were different, the engines were different. If you review it with that in mind the game is a pretty fun nostalgic look back at FPS games from the late 90's/early 2000's.

The problem is, this didn't come out in the late 90's/early 2000's. FPS games have moved well beyond the scope of Duke Nukem Forever. The game play mechanics feel old and out dated, the setting and theme is something out of an 80's action movie which again feels old and out dated. It just doesn't deliver the experience modern gamers are looking for. As I am an older guy, I really enjoyed my time with Duke Nukem Forever on Xbox 360/PC. It reminded me of all the nights spent finishing Duke 3D. Or Playing multiplayer over a lan set up (yes we had to move computers around to play multiplayer back in the day kids). So I somewhat liked it. Not everyone else will.

Also Duke Nukem Forever was never supposed to run properly on PS3/Xbox 360, it was design for PS2/Xbox only.

I've played a lot of bad FPS in my life, even finished a lot of bad FPS.

But Duke Nukem Forever was too much for me to handle, when the plaftorming and driving sections happened, that's where I gave up.

Duke Nukem Forever is neither a good game nor a polished one. For all it does right, it all falls to pieces because its gameplay is fucking whack.

The New Order is very enjoyable and has some of the BEST shooting in recent years only matched by some games like DOOM.

Duke Nukem Forever definitely has a better "bang for buck" appeal considering it can be found for a buck or two easily nowadays ;)

That being said, Wolfenstein (and DOOM for that matter) have WAAAAY better gameplay mechanics. The movement alone is much more natural and "old school" to me, which is a must for any shooter that claims to have fast-paced gameplay.

Not claiming Duke Nukem: Forever is a great game

After reading this post, I just re-checked. And none of those bullet points are a lie, or exaggerated, or put in a false context.

In fact, re-checking it seems some where missed, The New Order does in fact use health regeneration. The pickups glow like light-bulbs making any mystery or exploration non existent.

Unlike something like RTCW, where secrets required the player to use their head, almost all secrets are about 5 feet away in an obvious place making there entire point nullified.

So, I'm very confused you imply a lack of thought or deliberate attempt to incite people, if anything they have incited me, the praise, the accolades, it's no better and in many ways worse than Duke Nukem: Forever.

A strange case indeed.

The New Order is a fun game. For my money it's the only one of the Wolfenstein games that is actually good (beyond the original being a supremely influential title, the actual playing it part is whatever). Not that I didn't dig Return to Castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer (because eww, that campaign was dullsville), but it didn't stack up favorably to the better mp games of that gen.

New Order to me is a nice marriage of a modern styled fps borrowing some older design principles, and it works. Should the shitty bj monologues be dropped? Absolutely. Should the stealth be more interesting? No doubt. Does that game need a dumb upgrade system? Again, it goes without saying. But I get dual wield automatic shotguns, so **** everything. That games biggest crime is that I actually run out of ammo for those two shotguns and have to use other things. Gross.
