70’s for me. As for retro gaming I generally don’t mind going back to the 16-bit era and replaying some SNES and arcade games with the odd 8-bit NES game here and there. That’s as far back as I care to revisit. I mostly play current gen games or remastered games from previous gens.
Got my Atari 2600 for Christmas of 1982. Stayed up till midnight playing Super Breakout, Yars Revenge and Missile Command. Still got my Yars Revenge mini and Atari Force mini comics that came with the games.
I still fire up an occasional NES or Genesis game but I haven't gone that far back yet.
On a side note, when I was around 10 my younger cousin who I shared a home with got a Donkey Kong Jr. arcade table game (think sit down bar room video game). We spent so many hours on that game. We thought the funniest was when you made Jr. climb to the top of a vine and try keep climbing, it would make him look like he was spanking the monkey.
Born in 88 and grew up in the 90's playing Sega Genesis & SNES. Don't do too much retro gaming from those days unless it's a classic JRPG that I may have missed. Still play Chrono Trigger and FFVI with no fucks given lol
Born in 1972, first video gaming experience is Pong. Got a Commodore 64 in 1984 and ruled the nation with great games. Got my own console in 1986 the Sega Master System. Almost everyone I knew had an NES so I convinced my older bro to get me Sega for Christmas. It made me the mack daddy with the 12 year old girls.
From there I bought a Genesis and after a Saturn. I played a lot of Dreamcast at my buddy Pete's but moved to PS.
Mid 80s for me, with Atari 5200, NES, Master System, and Genesis, and Turbo Grafx. My older brother took lead on acquiring the system's but we both played, through 90s he gave up on it but I kept with it. He had a Commodore 64 but I never touched it.
Been gaming since '88. Started on my parents' Colecovision and transitioned to my first console the Master System in '89. From then I got a Genesis, PC gaming ('92), Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS4, and 360.
80s - HELL NO!
This.
Mid-to-late 90's is as far back as I go.
I'll play Deus Ex, Tie Fighter, maybe some other rare gems but honestly the best games of our lives are ahead of us. People look back with rose-tinted shades and that's cool, just don't buy into your sense of nostalgia as an actual metric of quality.
Early 90s. I grew up alternating between NES, SNES and Genesis. That's what everyone had until PS1 and N64 came out. I'll play retro games up to PS1 mostly. I will replay some SNES games, but not many. I don't care for the audio from the Genesis, save for a few games where I thought it was better (Earthworm Jim), so I generally avoid that as well.
Had an Atari 2600 in the early 80's but never got addicted. It was something my younger brother and I would pull out for 30 minutes every once in a while, but the games just didn't have much pull.
NES changed everything. We actually got addicted to SMB on the arcade machine at the local Pizza Hut, as we ate there once a week (unless our behavior that week dictated otherwise). Once we found the NES it was over: we were gamers.
And yeah, I still play NES games from time-to-time, especially since I picked up an NES mini in 2016. You can play those games and mostly switch your mind off, unlike modern games that require your rapt attention.
I started gaming in the early 90s with the NES. I prefer how retro games were generally designed much more than how modern games are generally designed, so I still love to play retro games from all eras, even Atari 2600 and Colecovision games that were released before I was even born.
Started gaming in ‘86. I got my cousins hand-me-down Atari 2600. After that was a Sharp TV/NES combo. Next was the holy trinity Sega Genesis, CD, 32X. The rest is history. (There was a game boy sprinkled in there somewhere)
I'll only say; there's no school like the old school and in all aspects of life, it's never been more true than it is these dayzzzz. lol :P
Isn't the joystick/button on the wrong side?
Revisited pengo recently, and I suck at it. Still play the odd game of galaga, or load up a Spectrum or c64 emulator.
Early 90's. Started with the NES.
Y'all seen that game called FOX N' FORESTS? Watching that game, I feel like I went back in time lol. It's releasing soon I think. Man, SNES era was the best.
Depends on what you mean by grew up. I was in my childhood during the 90's, but I did more gaming in the late 90's/early aughts. I basically started out on an NES and was on a PS2/GC by the time I graduated high school, so my childhood gaming spanned four generations.
I was born in the 80's... Grew up in the 90's playing the Sega Mega Drive and loved the following games to death:
