Think of how lame it would be if it got scratched..Litchie
OMFG! dude...that is so true! it would prolly take you 5+hrs to burn such a disc and then just to have it get scratched, And you would prolly back up your whole computer on 3 of these discs so a scratch = bye bye computer backup XD oh man i cant stop lol'ing...you get my vote for best post of the day :p
damn you could probably fit a Wii on that disc.TheDarkDisciple
what the hell that doesnt make any sense
at this point were talking about technology we wont see in market till about 2012supermechakirbyThis tech is crap, it's 5GB a layer, I'd rather see something like the Holographic disks, with about 300GB a layer, rather than, "LOLZ it's 100 layers of 5GBs", that's a bunch of bologna. It's better to have more in one layer, than need to apply more layers.
It is conjectured this will push the 250 Terabyte range in the near future. I saw something about this at last years American Physical Society meeting.
Don't expect any commercial use though, and if you do, the discs will be like 200$ each and the reader/burner will be close to 10 grand for the cheapies.

Exactly. But in Video Game terms, for the next few years, I think that a dual layer BluRay disc will be more than enough for the industry, but in 9 years (assuming the PS3 is a 10 year console - it probably will be), then I can imagine M$, Sony and co using these discs. It would probably mean an increase in price, though.
Also, what does it mean by 'virtual layer'?

Again however, you have to buy a drive just to use these discs. I think the solution here is developing something which can be used on a DVD player with more space. Expecting people to buy expensive new players just for more space is never going to work.Ninja-Vox
psst.... don't tell sony... they bet the bank on it...:)
HVDpins_basic
give it 2 years whoody12
gonna take a lot more than 2 years. look at hvd, similar tech, but been developed forever, has tons of support, yet its just now being standardized.

Tell me my sarcasm detector isn't broken and that you were, in fact, being sarcastic. Tough to tell sometimes on here.
