EA and Nintendo are really in bed with each other with the Wii, with a new marketing campaign also announced.
In his day three analyst report, Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian indicated that Electronic Arts views both the Wii and online as key to their business plan. They expect that the longer console cycle and increasing adoption of digital services will benefit their business going forward.
Additionally, Sebastian thinks that the Wii may get a lift from a cross-marketing campaign from EA/Nintendo. "EA announced a cooperative marketing program with Nintendo (Pushing Play), building off of the expected momentum from upcoming bundles of Tiger Woods and Grand Slam Tennis with the Wii MotionPlus controller. According to EA, Nintendo is providing 500k MotionPlus units for these games, after which they will be sold as stand-alone skus."
"Management also indicated key PC title Sims 3 is off to a strong start - and we believe is key to EA potentially exceeding consensus earnings estimates for F1Q," he added. "Overall, we believe EA remains on track to achieve better operating efficiency, and the company's product lineup through the end of F2Q appears solid. We also expect EA to pursue more meaningful marketing and distribution programs with other platform manufacturers later this year."
