EA delays major game Mass Effect 3 until 2012

"Electronic Arts said today it is delaying its major video game Mass Effect 3 until 2012. The game is one of the most anticipated of the year from EA, but it's not yet clear exactly how that will affect EA's financial performance.

EA made the announcement through the game's Facebook fan page, where executive producer Casey Hudson said that the company was delaying the game from the fall of 2011 to the first calendar quarter of 2012 in order to make sure the game meets the highest quality standards.

EA will report earnings this afternoon and will no doubt talk more about the game delay. But it's not clear how big a financial effect that will have, since it is one of dozens of titles that EA typically publishes in a given quarter. Still Mass Effect fans number in the millions and they won't be happy about the delay.

The first two Mass Effect games, published by EA's BioWare division, have been outstanding hits in terms of millions of games sold and quality as well. So EA has doubled down on the investment in Mass Effect 3."

I am happy it was delayed. I just hope that is the only one delayed this holiday season

They realised a DA2 effort on ME3 just wasn't going to slide with the fans?

Not a huge surprise, and I'm not terribly disappointed either. I'd be more than willing to wait another year if that's what it took for Bioware to do it right. Mass Effect has become one of my all-time favorite series, and I really want the big finale to be something great.

Let's just hope my unrealistic expectations aren't totally crushed. :roll:

Well at least it's not like EA in the past where they would have made them toss it out the door whether it was ready or not...

There was no chance Mass Effect 3 would have failed, but I'm very glad they're going to do more work on it nonetheless.

If memory serves me I believe ME2 was slated for a late year release and went to January of the next year. I kind of expected this... Im cool with it if it means a better game. ME3 MUST be told properly and without reservation in my opinion as it is the best franchise this generation.

Not a fan of the series but an RPG coming out within two years of the last installment seemed a bit rushed. The delay is a good thing.

The longer the better, don't want another Dragon Age II rush job...granted I haven't played that game but must I judging by all the negative criticism and fake early reviews?

I'm just going to echo everybody else's sentiment that taking additional time to really fine tune and polish the game, that which will be the conclusion to this epic trilogy, should have everybody as winners in the end, the devs and gamers alike.

Good - gives the dev team more time to find and iron out any bugs, plus time to add in more content.

Like most other games since 2009, if it isn't being lead on 360 or if the developer is putting it out on PS3 at the same time as 360, it gets delayed because of PS3 hardware issues.
