How delicious can news be?

The mobile-based future is here, and publisher Electronic Arts is reaping the rewards. EA reported today that it made more money through Apples App Store than any other retail distributor. That includes its own Origin digital-download service.VentureBeat

So, so much more in the full article. It's an incredibly interesting (or is the word... terrifying? lol ) article to see. What do people think about this? How long can you deny the future? The signs are... everywhere.

Apple. Get used to it. lol

Indeed.

It's not so much hostile as it is sneaky. They backed their way into the industry, and are set up to financially own it.

I think google is our future Mac.

Watch as mobile gaming still doesn't become the future this gen in any way or shape :P

Apple's App Store has been around since... late 2008, I think? Didn't take long for one of the industry's largest publishers to enjoy the greatest financial success on such a young retail platform (Apple's platform). That's significant.

Only reason people jumped on origin was Battlefail 3. Once they realized it was shit and all EA games poo with bad pricing, they moved back to steam with the good guys.

I feel I should remind people that EA enjoyed more revenue from Apple's App Store than from Origin, Target, Walmart, or any other retailer. All of them were worth less to EA.

EDIT: More sales through Apple than through any other retail distributor -- INCLUDING Origin, not JUST Origin.

When publishers see EA make more money through Apple's solution than ANY OTHER RETAIL solution, they'll notice. Expect Apple's store to only increase in value for anyone who wants to make money. Which is everyone that's not staffed by angry nerds.

What part in that points to fanboy? I just like seeing the inevitable evidence of the future. Also stirring the pot is fun, and gamers for whatever reason hate Apple.

The problem with mobile games is that's an even more "bubbly" environment than the traditional console market (which is already quite bubbly). And what I mean by this is that while trends tend to dissipate or intensify as a console gen goes on, on the mobile (phone) market those bubbles are almost yearly. very few games manage to consistently stay popular. Angry Birds comes to mind as one of the exceptions. Should EA for some reason make a bad move or find itself out of the trend all that "glorious" profit dies down. Of course it won't hurt them much since investment wise it's probably a loooot lower than what they put on the traditional platforms. It's the downside of the mobile market IMO. Things become obsolete way to damn fast.

I can imagine the gen after this one, shifting completely towards a mobile approach; I mean in 5-7 years I expect the modern world to have even better mobile infrastructures (look at the leap during this past gen! :o ), which would totally allow that kind of approach. That said however, this gen it'll still be as it is, since it's not yet stealing costumers per say (People who play on consoles don't stop playing them because of mobile games), it's just reaching a much wider and different audience.

So that why I think this gen traditional markets will still rule, despite the money being made on the mobile side :P

Desmonic
I think this is largely well thought out. However, I can't make that kind of determination until I see the PS4 and Xbox One do better at retail than the WiiU (which is... not doing well). It's less expensive to develop for iOS and it's easier to hit a broader market immediately. Epic was the first major gaming company to truly praise iOS as a means to make efficient money.

Dude gamers hate each other, why wouldn't they hate something that isn't (yet) a familiar name in gaming? Even if Apple had a console they would still be hated by opposing factions XD Just the way it is hehe :P

Desmonic
Oh well, if Apple made a console, they'd be hated even more, lol. At least the way things are now, Apple is sneaking up on the oblivious gamers out there. That's why I think it's funny.

Based on how retailers seem to be running out of pre-orders well before launch I'd risk myself to say they'll outperform the WiiU by quite a margin during their first year, however this isn't an exact science :P It could easily backfire with both of them flopping.

Also for me personally it's more the matter of getting the same experience as I would on a console. That's why I don't even consider making a leap into the mobile world because I know they are still a bit far from that. I think they'll get really close as this gen comes to an end, but only after this gen goes by will I make a choice on that. I know they'll get there though, just a matter of when and whether or not consoles will still exist/offer relevant experiences.

We'll see, I suppose. I don't wish bad things, I just don't deny the writing on the wall, that's all. Heh.

Take note how the Article, doesn't specify how much more it made over Android. It simply states 90Million between Smartphones&Tablets, I can understand Apple gaining success here since they were #1 but as far as the article goes Android could have been 44Million to Apples 46Million. Would have been more of a dominating factor if they specified how much more iOS did exactly over Android. Although given how much more popular iOS seems to be in the gaming factor I imagine it was an atleast 20mil gap.

Of course they've made more on the App Store than Origin. No one ever buys anything through Origin (except Sims DLC,) and it's their own fault for offering no incentives to switch from buying through other platforms/services. And lets not forget mobile platforms still have no good games.

"Electronic Arts made a total of $90 million on smartphones and tablets, but it didnt define how much of that came from iOS and how much came from Android." Wonder which made moore. (lol)

EA financial raports shows just how little money there truly is in mobile gaming. They are the biggest publisher on iOS and all they've made is 90 mln? Shows just how ridiculous and ignorant are the analysts who think Nintendo should switch to mobile.

Digital is money. We learned this years ago. I don't see what the big deal is. Only 24% of their digital revenue was made from smartphones and tablets, and they won't say how much was from iOS or Android. The majority of those sales being extra content (DLC/pay2win shit) which the mobile sector is notoriously famous for gobbling up and asking for thirds. Not a bright future for gaming at all, but the small ray of hope is that PC is still their biggest money maker.

They need more games. Yeah they got sales, but nothing I really want. Steam needs an update to the UI and storepage though. That's one place Origin definitely has Steam beat. It just lacks the community features and other things to make it really competitive.

There are no EA games you want? At all? Harsh :)

Personally I don't mind Origin, it's definitely more stable and faster than Steam, so as a game launcher it's ok in my book. Plus download speeds are great. It does however need more content. Indie games are coming (Wastelands 2 will even have short exclusivity period on it AFAIR), so that's nice. I just find it ridiculous that I can't user Origin to buy BioWare DLC or download F2P versio of Old Republic. It boggles my mind.

That's because of EA's screwup last year that gave me them all for free. :P

I just wish they had the library Steam did, or at least more than what they do now. A built-in, cross-platform chat function would be amazing. With Steam, Origin, uPlay, and whatever other digital platforms there are for PC these days, it's getting a bit out of hand.

I like how you completely ignored my very valid point. Just because the article specifies Apple coming out on top doesn't mean it was a large gap from Android. You're acting ignorant it's like you're covering half of your eyes with one of your hands and pretending it only says Apple on the cover.

All this tells me is, EA has no idea how to properly handle Origin, despite its large userbase, seems it offers very little incentive to be used as a primary DD store.

Thing is though TC, look at the sort of games they are making money from. Simpsons Tapped Out being one of them, look at the design of that game. Its not made to be played like a standard game, its got micro-transactions built into it and when you take into account the huge number of people that own an iDevice such as a iPad, iPod or an iPhone all with access to the same universal store, you can see why this is making them a mint.

What? For all you know, it may be a huge gap. But we don't know.

What about your point is valid? If you can say, "It may not be a large gap between iOS and android" and call it valid -- without any evidence, I can say "The gap could be huge" and claim it's valid -- also without any evidence.

See why I ignored you? :?
