Early Move Sales: Over 300,000 Units In A Few Weeks

Everyone is wondering how Sony's new motion control technology will fare on the sales charts and we have the first estimates.

PlayStation Move

Initially, it was reported Sony sold around 140,000 units in the first few days and according to VGChartz, there have now been over 300,000 Move hardware packages sold as of September 25. Bear in mind that it has yet to arrive in Japan - where it's set to launch on October 21 - and overall, we're talking about a few weeks span of time. They also report that Sports Champion has reached 250,000 in sales but that's a bit misleading, as it's bundled with some Move packages in North America. Hence, the 80% attachment rate shouldn't be all that surprising. That being said, it seems like the perfect game for early Move adopters, as it showcases the accuracy and responsiveness of Sony's new motion sensing system. Upcoming titles include The Fight and Sorcery; there are already several Move-dedicated games on store shelves, but more are to come.

When more software arrives, Move will be a more sought-after item, and according to some, it could maybe use a price cut. That really depends who you talk to, though, as Microsoft's Kinect will retail for $150, so no new motion control isn't exactly cheap.

First of all, lolvgchartz.

Second of hall, it's kinda hard to number how many Move units have sold as many people just needed the controller.

Nah, it's only "lol vgchartz" if the statistics hint towards Microsoft. Since it's Sony, it's okay.

Also, how do you even tally up sales for this thing? Its broken into many parts. Some people only need a controller. I cant even begin to imagine how you track sales for this thing. kinect is just the Kinect unit, thats it. Meaning when it releases itll be alot easier to track.

I look at the potential of the product, so sales don't "move" me. :P

yea lame i know

anyways, I'll get one when there are games that uses it well and actually interests me, nothing gimmicky.

Obligatory lol vgchartz.

Hard to really draw any conclusions from the numbers. 300k "in a few weeks" isn't exactly going to get Sony all hot and bothered, but since they're taking more of a long-term approach with Move I don't think it's necessarily a disappointment either.

Nice :D. Personally I'm not a huge fan of motion controllers, but it's good to hear it's doing good (because if it fails, then I'll be reading about another depressing story about companies losing money and people getting fired...seriously, I hate hearing about those :x). That, and nothing sucks more than buying an add-on that's DOA (sort of like the HD-DVD add-on...I actually bought one of those, only to find out in the next couple months that Blu Ray took over  ).

I hear at my local Gamestop and Target they are having a hard time keeping them in stock. LOTS of parents buying them up for their kids apparently.

I know it's not real good evidence, but it makes me feel that the casuals really do control the market more than any of us want to admit.

When the Wii, an extremely casual friendly system has sold more than the 360 and PS3 combined then I think its something we have to admit.

I dunno what they were projecting, but 300,000 units for something that isn't being heavily saturated on the airwaves seems pretty good. I didn't expect that many just yet. It sounds pretty good, I would consider the Sports Champion thing since I don't have a Wii.

Ragnarok1051
The factual ones are probably worse as VGChartz has a tendency to overestimate its sales. In any case, I'm still predicting the Sony MOVE will sell 1 - 1.5 million MOVE worldwide by the end of the year. It sold 300K in 10 days, which is ok, but far from great. There are only a couple of MOVE titles that are worth getting, so i don't expect gamers will be running out and getting this anytime soon. I'd say give it 5-6 months and then check back and see what it has.

Yeah that's what I was wondering. Does it mean that every PS3 eye that has been sold since the 15th of September will be considered a Move sale? Even if someone is buying it for some other use....wait I really couldn't say that with a straight face....but I guess some people will buy it just for old games too. Does every BallMote count as one Move sale, does every Nunch.....er navigational controller count as a Move sale too?

Quite a few people I know have bought the starter pack and a few extra lollipops. Heck I know one person who bought the starter and 7 extra balls on a stick so he could play against 3 other people all with two wands each. If you start looking at that it is going to be really hard to see how many actual individual people have bought Move. Of course to Sony all that matters is total money spent, and it sounds like people are buying Move. I imagine they have to be making some serious cash off of each sale, unlike on the PS3s. So I guess it is really good news for Sony.

I believe most sales of console add ons are intitially strong as because diehard fans are early adopters. I still say this thing and kinect are gonna be like the Sega CD and 32x respectively.

I have 4 Move controllers and my brother in law Chris has 2. He got the Sports Champion Bundle and I already had the camera so I bought everything seperate. The Move is simply the best motion control system out by far. Any PS3 owner would be doing themselves well by investing in it.

That was to be expected from the tech lovers, early adapters, and hardcore fans. The real test for Move will be with the general public and casuals.

I'm surprised people are buying into this thing so early. There are maybe a few games worth playing? I mean seriously, they F'd up Brunswick Bowling! It's off to a very rocky start if you ask me, and if the actual move control mechanics continue to not work well within the games it will fail.

Well the article said "hardware package", so I would imagine that it means starter packs. Keep in mind that the Europeen bundle doesn't have Sport Champions. That guy who bought 7 lollipops is dumb :P The PS3 console can only track 4 IIRC, the other 3 can't be used for lollipops, not sure how many nav. controller you can have. Tell him to sell the other 3 lollipops.
