LBP server issues are well publicised. With a large and arguably the most important aspect of the game (level sharing) still being not all that usable.

LBP doesn't have the easily advertised appeals and immediate draws of games like Gears of War and so it seems to me a game that is to survive and flourish on the power of word of mouth. With people not being able to get the best out of the game I think this could have serious repercussions on the games success. Which is sad because it is certainly something very new and unique.

What about you guys do you think LBP sales will suffer due to its stuttering performance at launch? Or do you still think this will be a blockbuster hit for Sony and the PS3?

Well LBP is a game that will sell million across a logn period of time..not BAM..and then fade. so launch numbers aren't going to be that high.

Blockbuster or nay i'll be getting it on the 7th, but the server issues could seriously effect the longevity and the initial vision of the game if they're not sorted soon.

Well if I had a PS3, LBP would be near the top of my most wanted PS3 game. It should do well me thinks regardless of the server problems. My question would be: how was this problem not cause for a lower GS score ?

Probably because the reviews used the Beta servers and all the content that the Beta players had created.

Dear Sony,

Thank you for bringing the following PC headaches to consoles:

- Mandatory installs before playing

- Limited HDD space (because of mandatory installs, poor 20Gb owners)

- Buggy releases that need to be patched

- Unequal hardware (BC or no BC SKU)

and now:

- MMO-like launches, where a game whose touted most-touted mode involves sharing and playing online is broken at launch due to server issues.

Signed,

Gamers

To be a bit more on topic though, I don't think that it will really affect sales too much...as long as they get their house in order soon. I'm sure more casual people will be picking this up over the holidays, so as long as the experience is solid from them, good word-of-mouth will most likely prevail.

I don't think I'd have the patience required to make a fully fledged stage of my own, and in that case I'd rely heavily on the stages of others. I would not buy until the issues are ironed out.

Gamespot
Review Run Date: Oct. 16

LittleBigPlanet was reviewed using a retail copy of the game that was able to connect to a server set up by SCEE ahead of the full release. This, on top of time spent checking out user-created content in the beta, afforded us ample opportunity to test all of the game's online features. We weren't able to see how the retail servers will perform under the weight of hundreds of thousands of users, of course, but that's true of any review for an online game that comes out prior to or even right around the day of release. If the online portion of the game doesn't perform properly at launch then that's something we'll report on.

The servers wont affect sales, the fact that no major retail store besides gamestop is carrying it ATM will affect sales. Amazon barely started shipping today.

Why should it affect sales? The story mode in single player or 4 player multiplayer are worth it alone, imo.

I don't think it'll really affect sales too much. This game just has too much of a good buzz going for it. Unless Sony screws around and the server issues take a month to fix, it shouldn't affect anything. The gamers who are really into this (and need the server) are the types who are patient enough to wait for the bugs to be fixed. (they're patient enough build their own levels after all). Though if Sony can't get it right after a while, they're going to shoot themselves in the foot once frustration sets in among the loyal LBP fans.

gamestop is currently selling lbp?

Supposedly since yesterday they have it only if you pre ordered....I ordered it off amazon last month and it hasn't shippet yet. My local Best Buy hasn't goten it, Wal Mart had it last week, was about to sell it to me, scanned it and they got a do not sell msg, same thing happened at target. I went to K Mart today and they are still waiting to get their second shipment (first was recalled).

My plan was to buy it from a store and return the one amazon sent me, but I might as well wait :?

I don't think it will affect sales too much. People will buy the game regardless. The servers will need some overhaul (MM didn't expect this kind of a load on the servers), so I expect the servers to be up within the week.

Did bad drum sets kill rock band? Theirs always a glitch in the matrix when something new comes out. It doesn't tarnish the game. Once the problem is fixed all is well in candy land.

So it's perfectly acceptable reviewing a game with the assumption that servers etc. will work perfectly on launch yet a game that needs a code patch, tough luck?

Honestly I dont think the effects of the server are a huge issue and will drastically affect sales. I think the delay may hurt them slightly but I think this kind of game which is new and buzz worthy is the kind of game that doesnt burn fast and die fast like GEOW but rather has a long life with ellaborate levels being made later convincing people to fork over cash.

Honestly right now everyone is truly busy just going through all the levels and trying to get all the material needed to build the cool levels they want to build. Then you have the lengthy intros to the level building which honestly right now is a little overwhelming for me and I will need alot of time to practice with. Not to mention the fact that the game hasnt been released worldwide yet, some countries wont get it till NOv. 5th, and it was just OFFICIALLY released yesterday.

I think LBP will be fine, it will be a long time seller. Unlike the variety of genreric shooters we get LBP won't be so easily replaced by the next new game since its so unique. Long shelf life.

I dont think the server problems will affect sales much. "Hardcore" gamers who were interested in LBP are still gonna get LBP because they know the server issues will be fixed sooner or later. Casuals probably dont even read up on gaming news, so the server issue is irrelavent to them. Worst case scenario, people might wait a few more weeks before buying the game, but I doubt its gonna truly affect sales.

Better question will the medias over reaction to the server issues effect sales?

I played for about 4-5 hours yesterday downloading levels playing online with others and I only had one time the servers acted up and it lasted for all of about 30 seconds.

I really hope this isn't the beginning to a series of 'Just Wait' LBP trend.

You critised an established, long running game like GOW, which may I add is still played in large numbers to this day. Yet you speak of this long lasting shelf life of LBP which currently stands at what, a day plus a few hours? It seems more and more apparent by the day that every PS3 comes boxed with a crystal ball.

Me personally, I think people will lose interest in LBP relatively quickly and fall by the wayside, maybe they'll go back to GOW, who knows.

This is one of the worst game launches I've ever seen, and it's sad. LittleBigPlanet has got an adorable, immediately accessible look to it, and then they go and botch much of their goodwill by instituting an unneeded recall, pushing the game further into the midst of other great game releases, and now that the game's actually out, the servers are busted to the point that the main draw of the game isn't there.

I don't think it'll affect sales much, though. Most people who buy it either know what the game's potential is or else they go by the Sackdude on the front, in which case they've already bought the game. And heck, those people might even not have their PS3s online because they probably don't know it's capable of it.

Little Big Planet sales will probably decrease because the online aspect of the game is one of it biggest strength. Without online I really don't see any reason on playing it unless just making levels. Regardless the game will still sell well, but it wouldn't be as much if the server wasn't a problem.

This is a specualtion thread so stop with the fanboy, "crystal ball", "just wait" crap. We were asked what OUR opinions were about forcasting LBP's sales. I answered that question with a guess JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE INCLUDING YOU. There is no reason to get all worked up over this.

I think this game will have a long shelf life because I see certain levels made in LBP in the later months after people have gotten better catching media attention for its quality or just interesting aspect. This will again help create buzz for a game that will be already our and may convince some new PS3 owners or people who just dont know much about this game to buy it. I know GEOW is still played, my point is the shooter fanbase is very ficle, and they move on to the next shooter rather quickly only going back if they get bored or the new game turns out to be a dud. I know I play shooters.

You think LBP will fall by the wayside, I say it being unique and not so easily replaced by newer games along with a decent fanbase following for user generated content will continue to spark interest in the game for a while.

Guess what neither of us is right, we are just discussing the future.

People also have to remember that even though LBP launched kind of funny its a game that launched during the Fall which means alot of gamers may and will most likely pick this one up closer to Christmas.

Well the fact that it doesn't have an international release date hurts, it didn't really get out of the starting gates well.

They need to advertise it more

I think you are over-reacting. You say pass till the servers are fixed...then why does it bother you that you bought the game. What do u think that your version will automatically stop working once the servers are fixed? learn to be patient. If i bought a game today and found it had sum issues that would be fixed in a week I wouldnt get all bent out of shape like you are. People need to learn to be patient. Sure it sucks but its not the end of the world. Please use some perspective. If you like the core game, just wait till the servers are fixed and your game will be worth every penny. Its not like once the servers are fixed the price of the game is gonna automatically drop :?
