http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/23/4549044/eidos-montreal-general-manager-resigns

Eidos Montreal founder and general manager Stephane D'Astous has resigned from the company as of last Friday, D'Astous told Polygon this morning.

D'Astous said his replacement will be David Anfossi, current Eidos Montreal studio head and producer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: The Fall.

In a statement, D'Astous, who helped found the studio in 2007, said he left the company after being unable to reconcile differences between Eidos and Square Enix Europe.

"Since last year's financial short-coming performance of Square Enix Europe, we (HQ London and GM Eidos Montreal) have had growing and divergent opinions on what needed to be done to correct the situation," he said. "The lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication were so evident, that I wasn't able to conduct my job correctly. I realized that our differences were irreconcilable, and that the best decision was unfortunately to part ways."

Eidos Montreal, which heads Square Enix's Deus Ex franchises, has faced turmoil over the past five years in developing the upcoming Thief reboot, which Polygon reports was mired in corporate politics and stalled by the departure of numerous development team members.

In March, Square Enix reported the company expected to incur "extraordinary loss" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, shortly followed by the resignation of CEO Yoichi Wada. In April the company was hit with widespread layoffs as part of a company-wide restructuring, and in May Square Enix North America's CEO and president Mike Fischer stepped down. Last month, Square Enix announced leadership changes across all its subsidiary studios.

If it wasn't for Eidos making games like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Hitman, Square Enix would not even have any decent games in their line-up. Eidos deserves better. Maybe an up and coming publisher like WB Games or Deep Silver can rescue them.

S-E is in disarray and has been pre-"extraordinary loss."  Unfortunate because they house some of the best design & creative talent in the industry.

When you have good franchises pumping out good games that are selling well and you still consider it a failure then you're doing something very wrong.

Exactly. There was a clear disconnect with reality.

"Square Enix have no vision"

Yep, sounds about right.   Probably why their own franchises are so effed up as of late.  I have a feeling that we really will see the final Final Fantasy one of these days.

Eidos was awesome. I don't know why they went down. They had some of my favorite games ever.

Square Enix, on the other hand, is done. They were also one of the best developers of all time... well SquareSoft was. It all started to go downhill with the Enix merger, but at least they still had some magic. Now they have lost it rapidly. This has happened to many Japanese developers this gen... could they just not adopt to the HD era? Nintendo admitted they are having trouble... but that doesn't make any sense, because it was Japan who promoted the HD era. I just don't get what happened.

Yes, they were, but not as good as Square.

Square hasn't been the same since 2003. They still were GOOD, but not like they were before. Then the HD era happen, and that was pretty much the nail. The coffin is getting ready.

I honestly don't think Japan will survive this gen, developer wise. Sad, because Japan was the heart and soul of the gaming industry.

you would think they would be in better shape looking at how great they are at picking western games to publish.

maybe they should get out of the making games end of the business completely and just be a publisher.

It wasn't even merger though. This all traces back to Final Fantasy: Spirits With In. Square put all their eggs in one basket expecting that movie to make them major cash but then it bombed and as a result Sakaguchi to be forced to resign. It was after than that Square started pumping out spin off games in order to make up for the loss they suffered.

The fact that the merger happened during the same time period is coincidental.

I agree, Square Enix has a ton of talent and a plethora of strong IPs and they still lose money? The people in charge at Square Enix have no idea what they are doing, its been obvious since the merger.

In what possible way could anyone conceivably equate a single player open world rpg with a braindead multiplayer shooter like Call of Duty?
