Now, i'm sure that most of you, the System Wars Community, have heard of the Elder Scrolls Series.

The last game, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, was critically acclaimed, and played for an extremely long time. A lot of players have spent more than 200 hours on that game alone.

This begs me the question, If Oblivion was such a good game, then why did Bethseda not try to develop the next in the series. Is it because they did not want the game franchise to look as if it is being milked? Or are they trying to develop the Fallout series at this moment in time?

Your Thoughts?

Probably because they got the Fallout IP, which is IMO, a much more interesting IP to work with. :)

Loved Elder Scrolls: Oblivion! Still playing it.

And superior multiplatform game on the PlayStation 3 - WTF! Bethesda did great with that one.

By the way, Fallout 3 was crap.

I played the hell out of Oblivion, modded the hell out of it, too. Fallout 3 was even better.

I'm pretty sure they said they were making another Elder Scrolls game a while back.

I can't wait for The Elder Scrolls V. I loved Oblivion and it's still one of the only Western RPG's I've played that I've enjoyed. I really hope Bethesda fixes some of IV's issues (some were addressed in Fallout 3) and don't take out things like level scaling.

They have other games to work on, and unlike other studios, really want to spend their time on this one.

They probably are going back to the series, actually, but it can take them a while. Check out the gap between Elder Scrolls II and Morrowind, I think it was like 5-6 years.

It has always been one TES game each gen and I hope it stays that way due to console limitations this far into the gen. Plus they made/are making a killing off of Fallout 3 all they really have to do is sit back in pre-production for TES5.

They wanted to give it a rest. No reason to make a sequel quite yet when there's so many expansions and not a new engine. Let them make a few more games with the Gamebryo 2.0 engine and then let tem come back with another Elder Scrolls next-gen.

Wow, that picture brings back memories. I remember seeing that image in 2006 and thinking holy ****! next gen has arrived. Now it looks like crap.

Anyway, i think its just because they take so long to develop (even longer now). I'd rather have them announce it and launch within a year instead of announcing it in 2008 and say have it launched in 2011. Or they could just be waiting for next gen.

I heard Oblivion wasnt too hot and only gaine critical acclaim for being the only current gen RPG out on the market at the time. Had it been released midway through a gen, its flaws may really show. They could just be waiting to do the same.

I hope they launch a new franchinse. What stuck me as the difference between Fallout 3 and Oblivion was that Fallout was *funny*; there's aways some sight gag or something. Oblivion just seems like a pompous, swords and sorcery game that takes itself too seriously. Give us some more gags Bethesda, whatever you do.

Please no more, collect the marbles of Nothgod from the Lake of Dogoth to re-forge Galgathon....its just too dry, bland, and NOT FUNNY.

Whenever Bethesdia made the comment that they aren't currently working on ES5 I sent them a nasty letter detailing my hatred of him for denying gamers what they want. It's almost as if Bethesdia doesn't like money and instead would rather just piss off gamers by making 20 Fallout 3 expansions. They even joked about making an ES MMO which really upset me. They're not taking the series seriously and have really went a long way into making me hate them as a company.

It is a shame that Oblivion was critically acclaimed... because the vanilla experience was just so... bleh. Shivering Isles and the mod communities' creations make for a much better experience, that is worth acclaiming critically.

I want Oscuro to be hired for ESV and whomever had the genius of creating Shivering Isles to be promoted to head of design.

Oblivion was a step backwards if anything from Morrowind (except for combat and sound/graphics ) imo, hopefully if they do decide to make a fifth installment, they will not adopt the oblivion mechanics

I think Oblivion was a fairly good game but definitely overrated. The story, characters, and combat were subpar with the only good thing being the open world and how you can interact with almost everything.

Dead-Memories

With the right mods, Oblivion is nothing but an improvement on Morrowind. I personally don't like the "dice-rolliness" of the combat in Morrowind. What I want for ESV, is all the factional stuff from Morrowind, the world-crafting creativity of Shivering Isles combined with the combat/levelling mechanics of OOO.

As long as there are more then 5 NPC voices and faces (not as long as its on consoles though), I'd be happy with a ES5 without too many major changes, no level scaling, longer main quest, and the obvious better graphics, more refined combat, etc. I put abut 150 hours into Oblivion, but I don't really like it THAT much.. it was just simple I suppose. It was over a long period of time too.
