So yeah it looks like the company that developed the Alone in the Dark 2024 reboot gets shut down by Embracer. As sad as it is the game didn't do well and with a lot of game companies all going out of business these days it isn't really a surprise here.

@last_lap: That's how well it did. No clue if that assessment is correct though. Some people said it was pretty good, but I have no clue.

I did play the remake and it was pretty good, really close to horror games and not that much like modern horror reboots with lots of shooting.

In fact the shooting is the weakest part of this game, it plays more like a PS3 era third person shooter, which is fine.

The atmosphere and the two-character setup was very nice. The audio design is something else, walking up an old stair or an old wooden floor made each creek stand out.

I'm gonna have to watch some gameplay videos to see if it's my jam or not.

Never played it, but it never looked good in previews. No surprise that it flopped. Sucks, but the shutdown is in line with expectations. These companies are shedding any dead weight. There is very little room for failure these days.

I concur. Combat wasn't good, but atmosphere and puzzles were good.

Game wasn't a masterpiece, but it's one of those 6/10s that you'd enjoy on a rainy day.

From what I've seen it looked a very basic 6/10 game couldn't have sold very well.

Every time they try to reboot Alone in the Dark, it fails. This was the third attempt at a reboot, and it failed yet again. And this time, the developer got shut down. That franchise is cursed.

I blame Uwe Boll and Atari (Infogrames)...

I got it at release despite the reviews. I enjoyed it though I'd say it was rough around the edges and hard to recommend others pay full price on it. Surprised Embracer doesn't try to find these studios and their IPs a new home before axing them, try to make money that way.

It always sucks to see dev teams shut down, but underperforming can and will cause that.. especially right now when the excuses are all too easy. I hope the people affected find work immediately to support themselves/family, but at least it wasn't a studio I have a deep history with. Every time a studio shuts down and I click a link I'm worried it will be something I really didn't want to see. The entire industry is suffering all the while the top dogs are taking home bigger and bigger paychecks each year. Screw the long term right?
