Alright, I'm sick of you stupid fanboys justifing the PS3 sales or even the system itself due to being "a Blu-Ray player". The PlayStation 3 is a game console first, multimedia player second. If you look at 2008's lineup, then you understand that. Of course 2007 was going to be a bad year for Sony. Every console has a bad first year. Sony cleaned it up. They have great games coming this year and you fanboys need to accept that. The PS1 was a CD player. The PS2 was a DVD player and now the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player. People getting a little jelous that the PlayStation brand is a very affordable machine with many capabilities. I love the Blu-Ray drive on my PS3. I love the movies, and the fact that I don't have to worry about space issues that devs might have or install issues since there has only been barely any games that use this feature. I use my PS3 as a game console first though. It has a Blu-Ray drive, so what. Are we going to hate people who like putting in new capabilities in their machines now?Albanian_Killa
it isnt very affordable and some people do buy it mainly for the blu-ray player, but maybe not as many as people are suggesting or maybe even more than people are suggesting, well never really know the answer to how many ps3s were bought for blu-ray alone
Sony used early adopters to make Blu-Ray standard while putting out a lackluster game lineup filled with promises that never happened, my @$$ hurts and I never even got a kiss.
While I'm (mostly)glad I have a PS3 lets not forget that Sonys main concern here was Blu-Ray adoption and gamers concerns were a distant second place.

I wonder what cows think of that statement. It seems clear that the PS3 is picking up steam and announcements of its "demise" was a little premature. However, I also think it is abundantly clear that Sony used the PS3 to push the blu-ray format. It was a business decision and it appears to have worked for Sony, but how does it help gamers. The space argument is somewhat valid but there were other ways to approach this. Sony's move seems very similar to MS and Explorer. Thoughts?
angelkimne how can you complain about the psrice of the ps3? In the US its $399. In the UK thats £200! I would jump at the oppertunity to get one that cheap (even though I already have one. I think that £300 ($600) is cheap for the ps3!
But really £200, thats only a bit more than the psp was when it came out.
Stop whining and think.
It should take after the PSP and become a phone. The PSP started out as a UMD movie player and failed, so it tried its hand at mediocre games, and failed, now its a phone, it has to succeed.UssjTrunks
The psp still has a fair ammout of games. I enjoy my DS and PSP eaqually so.. Fanboys miss out.
I'm saying my original entent to buy the ps3 was for blu-ray. It is a verry valid and real argument.
I can't freaking wait until LittleBigPlanet thou!

Where are these mediocre games? GTA series, SOCOM, Jeanne D'Arc, and all the other PSP games that exist such as Metal Gear, etc. I can't name all the games since I don't have a list, but the PSP is definetialy a more attractive product than the DS if we're talking about handhelds IMO.
Plus dhjohns I understand that Sony used blu ray in the ps3 to win the format war. But that benefits everyone. Now soon blu ray will be standard for HD movies so a blu ray player is all you need. Plus the fact is it DOES have more space for games. Which means longer games which are graphically superior.
I like having blu ray in my ps3. I dont care if others dont. thats my opinion.

Well, it also ensures the PlayStation 3 actually is more future-proof. We've seen in the past how much games have evolved on consoles such as the PS2 from the first year to right now. Big change, so when DVD wasn't needed in the first year of the PS2, it was later on. Pretty much, it makes it future proof. Makes me happy.

I knew what I was getting into when I bought the PS3, the non BC models were coming out and it basically forced me into buying a 60 gig before I really wanted to.It will have a better lineup eventually and I made the sacrifice because sometimes you get taken advantage of while pursuing your hobbies.
The option of not owning a BC model was not for me.

No, the DS is a more attractive product for a "handheld". I love my PSP because I can take console style games on the go.
It's good that they're not the same. They're each are fun in their own way.
Calling ps3 a blu ray player is absurd. Anyone who owns any of the three consoles will know how great they are. The ppl who do claim this blu ray garbage doesn't own a ps3. I don't see why any1 would claim that ...unless they feel insecure with their console. Grow up?

Such is the fanboy circle of life. Remember Wii only sells because its a fad?
Well, we've already proven it's not a fad. Fanboys can't accept that. We never really touched on this issue much except fanboys flaming each other after someone put it out there.

I don't know if I agree with that. Don't know if I disagree with that. :P I am fine with blu-ray in the PS3 but I think there were other viable methods that Sony could have used. For games (not movies) blu-ray only gives you more space. Is there another way? In the end, does it matter? Sony appears to have come out of its rough patch a little scarred but still going strong.

This gen just started. You ever hear the phrase "History repeats itself". Well, wait a little longer when this gen goes into full-gear and games on ALL consoles will look better and play better. The 360 though might be in trouble due to DVD9. Hell, have you seen Lost Odyssey :D I love the way they packaged that too :P

TC thats your opinion not supported by the way Sony has sold every console they've ever created. Sony always approaches the industry by ushering some new tech that the industry hasn't instituted.
PS1- CD, Music and 3D gaming
PS2 - DVD, Movies, USB
PSP - hand held multi-media and wifi, UMD
PS3 - Blu Ray, i-Browsing, HDMI
Just because of 1 year of third place results behind Wii and 360 is not going to change a decade of gaming dominance and the way they sell to the industry.
Gaming is great but its not the only thing I want to do with my expensive system. If it lets me play movies and check the internet news; so be it.

We'll just have to wait and see lol The length of the games such as for RPGs could be a lot longer due to Blu-Ray. It depends on how devs want to use it.
I honestly got a PS3 for the blu ray drive.shaggygrosser
Then you're one of the few. A lot got it for games. The thing is though, gamers also like watching movies!

Wasn't needed in the first year? Um call me crazy but you realize how many games on the PS1 were multi-disc that weren't JRPGs right? GT2, Fear Effect, Fear Effect 2, Resident Evil's, Metal Gear Solid ect.
SSX was a launch game that was over a Gigabyte and others were over 700mb as well. Games like DMC, GTA3 among others came at the end of PS3's first year and were well over 700mb. Developing those kind of games with CD's in mind would have been a stretch. PS1 already proved that CD's were not going to be a viable mainstay for the generation afterwards.

If you look at the majority of multiple system owners here on SW you see them gripe about PS3 problems constantly the only people blindly supporting the PS3 are people who ONLY own a PS3. You would think that would tell people something but they all are happy to have blinders on so why burst their bubble? But it is a Blu-Ray Player?
As of right now its the ONLY Blu-Ray player on the market that is firmware upgradable to Profile 2.0.
Walk into Best Buy, tell the electronics guy you want a Blu-Ray player that will play all the features of the upcoming Fox Movies, they will walk you right over to the PS3 because its the ONLY one that can, till Samsung and Panasonic release their new Profile 2.0 players in April. Do you think that that has not at least aided its sales?
Aside from that, I always scratch my head when I hear about this amazing 2008 line-up for PS3. I was a launch PS3 guy and all I heard about was the wonderfully amazing 2007 Library that featured Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Warhawk etc.
Now that we are enterting 2008, its like I am watching reruns of posts from January February 2007.
While you Cows are screaming and thumbing your chests about how PS3 is going to "pwn" 2008 and will over take Wii and 360 on MGS4 alone,
Us Manticores would be content with a PS3 exclusive that outscores Kameo.

Yes that's true but also note that most ppl buy psp for games like i did. I couldn't care less if it could go on the internet and stuff. Or music . I will use other stuff around my house for that.
Look at the NPD. Second best selling console in January, yet only one software title in the top ten, What does that say to you? To me it says "That's a lot of BR players sold".travt-down
IMHO, I think you are right. My brother is buying a PS3 also, but not for games, but because he needs a blu ray player to go along with his new HDTV. I think the PS3 is the only BR player that outputs in HDMI 1.3, which his new HDTV supports. My brother never buys video games, and probably still won't.

I guess you don't know how to read data because the software #'s aren't just from new people buying consoles. It also includes people who already own the console. And we know X360 launched a defective console a year early so of course it has a higher install base, which means more software. But if you look at PS3 it is selling plenty of games.
Resistance million+ seller, Uncharted million+ seller, Motorstorm million+ seller, COD4 million+ seller, etc...
I guess you chose to ignore the news yesterday about World in Conflict no longer console exclusive to X360, it's now being released for PS3 on the same day. I wonder why they would do that?? Oh maybe games do sell on PS3.
lol does that mean that kameo is better than all ps 3 exclusives games. nope because it was first of its kind you really think if it cameout today would of out scored warhawk, heavily sword, uncharted, rachet and clank which all are better than kameo. pdz, kameo was rated upon nothing else on the market that was next gen = to compare to. uncharted wipes the floor with kameo. But it is a Blu-Ray Player?

i agree that sony should stop trying to be everything but only to a certain extent. But business is business. If you act nice and fair, you can't become successful. As long as it's legal, use it to your advantage. Pays off like microsoft.
