RDR story was good but another revenge story? ME2's was decent but no way as good as the first
is Enslaved the best narrative and story in game this year?
if not whats your pick?

I haven't played Enslaved but it seems great. I actually really loved Heavenly Sword for what it was. The plot in summary was meh, but it was entirely character driven and the characters were amazing. My vote for the best story goes to the original Mass Effect though.
EDIT: nevermind, I thought you said 'in a game ever'. Yeah, its probably the best story this year/
Heavy Rain > all of those you mentioned.

Completed it twice but its riddled with too many plot holes to be considered as good as Enslaved's well constructed narrative
(and Heavy Rain's story certainly isnt as good as Mass effect 1's, if you were including that game)
What's the game even about? I never really paid much attention to it. Either way, it has an uphill battle againast games like MGS4, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Mass Effect...gillri
are people even reading the words 'this year'
Not really. I read right over that part.If it has anything that actually resembles a "story" and not what RDR and ME2 were sporting (busy work mostly)... then I wouldn't doubt it. Though, I have yet to play Dead Rising 2... and thought the original Dead Rising's story was great, both for its camp and the small seriousness about the over-production of beef for the ever-consuming American public.

Mass Effect 2's story lies with its characters...people just don't get this. The crew is the story unlike the first game.
I havnt played Enslaved yet but i cant see any game this year story wise touching Alan WakeRDR story was good but another revenge story? yeah I liked Alan Wake's, I think its narrative was excellent but the way it was told (i.e. the story) was not done as well as it could have, good shout as I forgot about that game
Alan Wake and Heavy Rain certainly are very story based games,

I completely understand that, overall ME2 is a better game than the first due to the gameplay improvements and the many and awesome characters you could get to know, the amazing locations also,
but ME1's story was soooooooooo epic and the majority of ME2's narrative was collecting a crack teamfrom around the galaxy, which makes for a very interesting game (well GOTY interesting) but not a great narrative or story IMO

more epic doesn't mean better...KOTOR II's story was less epic than the first, but it was better. When the characters are the story, they have to be great characters to make a great narrative. ME2 has this....the cast is one of th ebest RPG casts ever in gaming. Its good you think that and i hope its true. I loved Heavenly Sword and hope Enslaved matches/surpasses it in that department. HS has a simple story but it was beautifully told and has a great cast. The demo didnt show much but i liked what little i saw and could see it being great.
Saying that, I doubt its as good as NIER's.
Heavy Rain was awesome, and did have one of the best storys this gen. haven't played enslaved., not really sure how it could set up into a good story from that Demo looks like a spiritual remake of 2008 PoPHeavy Rain > all of those you mentioned.

Heavy Rain 3.Enslaved. 4. Mass Effect 2Alan Wake so far for me, but I haven't played Enslaved yet.

is it really fair to praise it as its based on a book?campzorMy thoughts exactly. Mind you, that's not to take away from NT interpretation, but it's just that....an interpretation on an established literary work.
Alan Wake so far for me, but I haven't played Enslaved yet.
Yeah I would put alan wake a tthe top so 1.Alan Wake 2. Heavy Rain 3.Enslaved. 4. Mass Effect 2 interesting that you put alan wake on top of heavy rain, i still have to play that game but HR had a pretty well though narrative, even if there were a couple unanswered holes.it's just the monkey king story told for the umpteenth time over the last what? 6 centuries? kinda tough to screw it up.

Being a massive alan wake fanboy doesn't help. though I really really did enjoy heavy rain.Alan Wake beats everything imo... the official plot thread on the AW website is 200 pages long, and when you read it, you begin to realize just how deep that narrative really is. And unlike some, I found the Red Dead story to be brilliant. I haven't played Enslaved, and probably won't until it's a lot cheaper, but I'm glad people are digging it.donalbanehmm that's pretty exciting, i've put alan wake on the back burner for far too long, i'm going to have to find a way to play through it. it definitely looked like it had some philosophical and complex ideas at the core of the story.

but ME1 still has a better story, epic doesnt usually mean better, in this case it does, was there anything as sombre and poignant as Vigil's epic story in ME2?
I dont think there was, it had more emotion to it than ME2 and it was more epic, and im talking about core narrative here not side stories

for 22 different endings of course there's going to be a few plot holes. luckily none of them are big enough to put the whole story in jeopardy, which imo HR has one of the best stories in a game this year. how many different endings did enslaved have? were there any games that came out this year with more options/as many endings as heavy rain?
please use spoiler tags, but what plot holes did you come across? I can try to help in filling those for missing plot points for ya.
also, I've been REALLY enjoying the castlevania: lords of shadow story. altho I wouldn't put it at the top of my list, the narration and voice acting by patrick stewart/robert carlyle = pure epic!
Haven't played Enslaved, but the story which the demo showed was rather "meh" and remembered me somehow on #9 oO It's hard to choose a game for best story, looking back, all were rather weak. I hope Front Mission will deliver ^^

i can't believe you think Heavy rain had a good story let alone one of the best stories.
It had many plotholes and story was the main aspect of the game
i thought it was cool that you were actually playing as the villain the whole time, and jayden, maddie and ethan were cool characters with some exciting moments. It was pretty good overall, considering it didn't rely on any abstract or abnormal elements and was just a crime-thriller like the zodiac.
I don't know, maybe. I liked Bioshock 2 too. And RDR was also good. Heavy Rain and Mass Effect i didn't like.
Heavy Rain was all over the place, it had a lot of noticeable potholes and inconsistencies, useless characters, ect.
Mass Effect 2 was just unimaginative and just crap, classic Bioware.
Call me too optimistic but Nev Vegas hasn't come out yet. I think that will take first place as story of the year. And Alpha Protocol i haven't played but I'm sure the storytelling is good.

Tali's story was pretty emotional, and you bet it will be a core story in the 3rd game.I don't know, maybe. I liked Bioshock 2 too. And RDR was also good. Heavy Rain and Mass Effect i didn't like.

feel free to list some of the plotholes since the TC hasn't so far (make sure it's in spoilers) and I can do my best to explain how it actually fit with the story.
destructoid did an entire article about plotholes yet, all the 'plot holes' they listed didn't appear as plot holes if you thought of it in the right context.
