Enterbrain President Disappointed with Monster Hunter 3 Sales

Despite the title selling a million copies on Wii, the president believes it could have sold better.

In a recent interview with Japanese website Mainichi.jp, Enterbrain President Hirokazu Hamamura expressed his disappointment over the sales of Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 in Japan. "I thought it would sell more. Crossing the million mark was the passing grade, though. On the Wii, which doesn't have games targeting core game fans, it made a strong effort against the 'hurdles' of being on a console and being a network game. However, I believe they wanted it to reach 1.5 million to 2 million copies."

The title was a strong performer throughout the whole year, coming in at number eight in ASCII's list of the year's best sellers with 949,095 copies sold.

Despite its relatively modest performance, Hamamura noted that the title could still be a strong seller for the rest of the year, especially if a new Monster Hunter title is released. He also hopes that the release of core games like Monster Hunter will grow the core market on the console.

meh, I think we shoudl wait to see what the sales of the new 360 one coming out are before judging its poor sales of a handheld to console swithc and not just a Wii demographic audience thing.

He's going to feel terrible when the 360 version struggles to make it past the 500K mark then.

Talk about high standards.

Anywho, doing a quick search on the most reliable sales site I know (Extremely heavy emphasis on 'I know'), those are some pretty good numbers for the game, especially when considering the appeal of handheld gaming is gone with this rendition and the fact that these are Japan-only sales. Of course, the series has only sold well in Japan to my knowledge so it's pretty much up to localization efforts to determine how well this does in the end.

Monster Hunter 3 shouldnt have been on the Wii. First of all a game of such a large scale would have been a lot more fun and appealing if you could have great graphics on a big HDTV. I can't imagine playing any of the monster hunters on a DS rather than the PSP, it wouldnt have been the same. Second of all, the PS3 would be much better suited control-wise. And last of all, the online play would be much better on a PS3 instead of the Wiis mediocre online. And besides, 1 million is no small number, especially considering the fact that it got released on the joke of a system known as Wii

It WAS on the PS3 until they realised that it would cost more than what they were going to sell it for if they did put it on the PS3.

They thought that it would be easier and cheaper if they developed on the Wii.

I absolutely agree. Even though I am getting the Wii version. This game would have been 1000% better on the PS3.

Hey I have a solution. Want more sales for MH Tri? FREAKING RELEASE IT IN THE US ALREADY! Don't delay a game for almost a year after the original Japanese release while also adding absolutely nothing to it.

As much as I wish I could clap for you for saying what I should've said long ago, the article never really did establish what Enterbrain was. Doing a quick search brought me this.

In short, you're probably yelling at the wrong person. :P I can't blame you though. I don't really attempt to keep track of any developer's in-house studios so I honestly thought they were a part of Capcom until something just clicked in my head.

Don't worry. My statement was a blanket one directly toward WHOEVER decided to delay MH3 in the US. Talk about killing hype.

I have never played a MH game and I was looking forward to giving it a try on the Wii. . .but darn, they are making it hard for me to want to give them my money.

You get a controller so PS3 controller isnt better suited, It looks great in comparison to MH360, Its never been a big series in any country but japan (mh1 was only released in uk and not 2 on PS2), Wheres the complaints about the Online on MH3's online on Wii?! Yes a joke of a system though Capcom went with the biggest percentage of the market in japan. Overall the joke is your post.

Not really. It probably would of sold more, way more. It's been a known fact for a while now. Anything outside of Nintendo's first party sells like crap. Whilst third party games sell well on both PS3 and 360.

The PS3 installed base in Japan wasn't even 4m at the time of release of the game, no chance of it selling 1m.

Where you getting that number from. Most quality 3rd party games sell plenty on the HD consoles. And it would obviously make more sense to have an online focussed game on the HD consoles/PC instead of Wii, the Wii has rubbish online as even the biggest Nintendo fan should be able to admit!

I think they'll get alot of sales this time round when its releaed in the West.

I remember reading an article saying Nintendo is lending a hand in marketing it here, something to do with pokemon level advertising i think.

This has nothing to do with greed.

It's about games meeting their expectations in sales.

A game this is just profitable could still very easily be a disappointment in sales. Look at games like GTA4, MW2, Halo 3, Mario kart: Wii, Super Mario Galaxy. Do you think these games would have met their sales expectations if they only were just profitable?

Hell, Nintendo was disappointed with the Animal Crossing: City Folk (3.3mil) and Wii Music (2.5mil) sales.

Huge third party games have no problem selling good in Japan. Look at FFXIII, 1.5mil first month.

No it's not just Brawl, the entire online system is horribly inferior to the other 2 consoles. And yes, I do think it would sell better on a HD console. "Teh hardcore" games always sell better on the HD consoles.

COD WAW : 1 million + RE 4 : 1 million + COD 3 : 1 million + RE Umbrella Chronicles : 1 million+ No more heroes : half a million and Suda's top selling game of all time House of the dead 2 and 3 return : Million The Wii is easy to pirate and people download games, that negatively affects the sales. I would not be surprised if there is a huge amount of people in Japan that downloaded MH3

Look, you're talking as if Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is horrible. I mean, this is N's first attempt and it is improving. "Teh hardcore" do not always sell well on HD consoles. Ever heard of Valkyria Chronicles? MH3 on the Wii will sell well in the States. Heck, piracy negatively affects the Wii's "core titles" . House of the Dead Overkill sold half a million and 870k downloaded it. That says something.

Ever heard of Valkyria Chronicles? MH3 on the Wii will sell well in the States. Heck, piracy negatively affects the Wii's "core titles" . House of the Dead Overkill sold half a million and 870k downloaded it. That says something.

Valkyria chronicles hmmm according to VGchartz (not a great source but it not way off from the real numbers) this game sold 820k WW and thats pretty good for a JRPG specially if its a new IP even an established games like tales cant sell that much.

I played Brawl and Mario Kart online, much of the time they were unplayably laggy.(it's not because of my connection either :P)

And it's not just that, it's the whole community, voice chat, friends lists, invites, etc. All the stuff 360 and PS3 take for granted simply doesn't exist on the Wii.

As for sales, it's rare that a quality "hardcore" Wii game does really well. And equally rare that a quality "hardcore" game does very poorly on 360.

New IPs like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, Dead Space etc etc etc all sell millions with a smaller userbase than Wii, while stuff like Dead Space on Wii stuggles to sell with a huge userbase.

Piracy affects 360 as well as Wii, so that's a non issue.

Enterbrain is a japanese magazine that is in no way connected to Capcom development. So the dissapointment from the president of the mag is pretty irrelevant. One million in sales is just fine, considering the waning popularity of console gaming in japan. The game isnt even released in the West yet. I've noticed recently that Nintendo's software sales seems to be a green light for trolls to bash the Wii. Sour grapes I suppose.

Random Japanese website president is disappointed? Who the hell CARES?Thunderdrone

This is no "random Japanese website president," this is the president of a well-known publisher of a well-known magazine called Famitsu. This publisher is also known for tracking the sales of software and hardware in Japan like Media Create.

While the sales are disappointing because Monster Hunter 3 sales did not meet expectations, a game selling more than 900,000 copies in Japan is something most games there will never meet. I do not think that it has to do with the Wii install base, but more on how Capcom handled the game as well as the fact that players need to pay a fee in order to play online.
