Epic SAYS DVD-9 IS TOO SMALL FOR UT3 !!!

Blu-ray Disc drive in PS3 could pay off with "Unreal Tournament III"

Epic Games' Unreal Tournament III is a PlayStation 3 exclusive for 2007. The main reason, according to the developer, is that Sony is more open to Epic's proposals for an open system to allow game modifications to be run on the PS3. There may also be another, however, for Epic's apparent favor of the Sony console.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Epic Games VP Mark Rein spoke highly of Blu-ray Disc's storage capacity. In fact, Epic may have to omit several maps in the Xbox 360 version due to space constraints posed by the traditional DVD-9.

"We'll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version... Blu-ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom," said Rein in an Xboxer story. "And what's really cool is if you think forward and think about what we've done in the past with UT. We had UT 2003 and then we had UT 2004, which was everything in UT 2003 plus a whole bunch of great mod stuff that we went out and purchased from mod makers."

"If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make," added Rein.

Wow a western dev the maker of GeOW no less that does not use cgi says dvd is too small, let the damage control begin like the pgr4 episode.

I don't want to be the one to say this, but this is old news by now on SW. And yeah, pretty much UT3 is going to be:

PC > PS3 >>> 360. The 360 version is pretty gimped compared to the pc and ps3 versions.

I will be getting the pc version but I had no idea the ps3 version had mods and kbam support.

Of course Gears can't run on ps3. The game would need to be ported to ps3 runing the UE3 (ps3 version)

But this really give you doubt. Since Gears is based on UE and is released last year. Now they come out with UT3 based on the UE too so Gears could run on ps3 if they recompile the code for the ps3.

And Microsoft isn't publishing UT3, so has no call on the cost of the UT3 maps.

Microsoft published Gears of War. Microsoft isn't publishing UT3. Problem solved. They have no say in the pricing of the content for UT3.

The DVD vs. Blu-Ray debate is being fired up again this morning, as PGR4 dev Bizarre Creations blames DVD size for the reason you won't see different times of day in PGR4.

Speaking on its official forums, a Bizarre spokesperson said: "You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD."

Sounds pretty much the same as being night to me.

Mark Rein also said this today about if they have to cut out maps:

Sorry, I don't tie myself to a console or company like you may do. I am open to any console. I believe I am not "damage controlling", but simply setting everything straight and proving most wrong.

If everything could be put on one disk, which I am almost sure it will be anyways, than that is best. If somehow the maps end up getting left off, they will "easily offered via the Market Place" as Mark Rein has said.
