In an in-depth new interview with Epic VP Mark Rein, the exec has been discussing Unreal Tournament 3 for PlayStation 3, praising the possibilities for upcoming Home integration and Sony's 'trojan horse' strategy of including Blu-ray in the PS3.

Firstly, Rein talked about Unreal Tournanent 3's planned integration with Sony's Home online world space. UT3 is now confirmed to launch for PlayStation 3 in December, with Home due out in early 2008, but the VP indicated that Epic already has concrete plans for use of the service:

"We're planning that you'll be able to get a party together in Home and then file into the game from an Unreal space. Home's pretty cool, so we're planning to do that. That'll make it easy for... what I like about that is that you'll be able to form without us having to build a party system. It won't be as detailed as a real party system, but the idea is that we could all meet up in a room and go together in the game.

I think it's really smart that eventually if everybody does that, each company doesn't have to develop its own way to all meet up somewhere and all go into a game. I think that's a very smart way to do it, and I kind of wish Xbox 360 would do that, and I'm hoping that they will at some point.

In other words, all these games have these different systems for getting together and then traveling into the games together or playing as teams or whatever. I expect that to be a dashboard functionality at some point in the future for the Xbox 360, and I think Sony's already thinking that way with Home."

Further on in the interview, Rein discussed the PlayStation 3's possible momentum going into the holiday season, post-price cut, noting "They've got a lot going for them right now. It's a great Blu-ray player. They're going to push that really hard." Clarifying his comments further, he explained of this angle:

"I think if you have a large install base [of any game-playing device], you have an ability to sell software, and if you have a large enough install base, the publishers will, if they feel they have a big title, they will put the money behind marketing it. I think there's nothing wrong with the Trojan Horse strategy of "let's get this device in the living room, and it can play music and DVDs and high-definition movies." The Xbox 360 does that too.

So I don't think there's anything wrong with having a good Trojan Horse strategy, because there's nothing better for us as game developers than having a huge install base. Publishers will say, "Hey, there's ten or however many million of those. Let's spend a little bit extra to buy our disc and stick it in."

I think once it's there, there's the temptation to play games on it, regardless of what your original meaning was. If people buy it as a Blu-ray player, they... will play games. When the big ads come out in August for a new Madden game, they'll pick up Madden. They've got the equipment, so why not? They've made the investment."

Happens that PSX & PS2 also had a trojan horse: CD and DVD. The PS2 was the best option for "kids" and parents, due to the cheap DVD reader it was, counting it played games.

Now, lem logic says otherwise?

And yeah, let's bash one of the makers of GeoW when he says something good about the PS3.

No they are not lazy don't spin what hes saying, he just takes that time making the party system and put it into other features, why bother making a party system if the console already has one built into it's OS?

Epic is an awesome dev eventhough I don't think the Unreal Engine is quite as awesome as they would have us believe, but its good to see a competent dev pushing the PS3. Now I just have to wait for the 360 release.

It's not being lazy. These consoles pride themselves on mp games so why not have the ability to form parties outside of a game and be able to hop from game to game with that party. Imagine hopping from UT3 to Warhawk to CoD4 to Killzone 2 without having to worry about someone not in your party taking your buddies spot in a smal game.

The PS1 was not a CD Trojan horse because CDs were out LONG before the PS1. Neither was the PS2 with the DVD's as once again DVD's were out LONG before the PS2 launched.

BR PS3 players are outselling HD-DVD but stand alone players aren't even close.

As far as your PS3 sales trippling, it's all due to the recent price drop. Even still the PS3 sales are poor.

So you're telling me the PS1 pushed the CD format???? I'm sure you weren't even born when the CD was invented but the PS1 DID NOT push taht format.

The DVD format was already gaining steam long before the PS2 launched. What Sony did with the PS3 is called a Trojan horse.

Maybe you should stay in school and learn real history kid.

Cd format. True. It didnt help much. Sometimes, it was handy. Nothing else

On DVD, its another story. It was my first DVD player, and for many others it was too. So yes, it pushed the format.

Tbh, haven't seen soldiers popping outta my BR reader stabbing my ankles at night. So I fail to see why it's a trojan horse, according to your history lesson

Go back to making just PC games like you used too. He is cuddling up to everyone when a new game of epics comes out on the system.

He never once mentions how the PC started his amazing UT. He cuddles up to MS when they bring out gears and does the same for UT 3 no doubt we will see the same thing when they bring out UT 3 on the 360 late next year.

What a load...

they're poor with respect to wii and 360 in NA, however the sales have picked up worldwide, especially in japan where its been outselling the wii for 3 weeks now, so lets see if the positive momentum continues

He's right. There are people who will pick up the PS3 as a blu-ray player, but the percentage of people who even own an HDTV is much smaller than the percentage that don't. So basically, to the majority of the world, the PS3 is an over-priced gaming console, with a cool feature that they have no way/desire to take advantage of. It's a no-brainer for people with an HDTV to own a PS3, but Sony's problem right now is finding a way to prove to the rest of the population that library of games justifies a $400/500 purchase.

*sigh* Take off the Asbestos/zinc helmet so you can think properly.

The term Trojan Horse doens't mean they INTRODUCED the format, but the "pushed" it so to speak and made it highly popular. PS2 made DVD highly popular.

Btw wassup with the "kid" crap? I'm in college smart one.

Hey kid, learning about CD and DVD formats and if the PS consoles pushed them isn't real history...

And for the record, the PS2 was one of the first (ie affordable), if not the first $299 DVD player.

Doesn't it remind you of Gears of War. He said they would have loved to have put in a party system for Gears but they didn't have time B.S. Even though I like there games, I thought they where the premiere developers for online games yet Gears online was a mess in my opinion!
