Some of the classes and races on offer in EverQuest Next have been revealed through a series of SOE panels.

Taking place this weekend at SOE Live in Las Vegas, Massively reports that panels confirmed races including Dwarves, Humans, Ogres, Elves, Dark Elves and Kerran will be available to play when the game launches.

In terms of classes, the situation is slightly more complicated. Rather than selecting one class and sticking with it, EverQuest Next will allow you to multi-class indefinitely, meaning you can mix and match skills from different ones to create a build that suits you. Massively reports that there'll be over 40 classes you can master with the first five being Rogue, Warrior, Tempest, Blademaster and Wizard. It's not yet clear which, if any, will be included in the list of eight starting classes on offer.

Additionally, there won't be levels or a level cap in the game; instead, your character will progress through learning these skills and mastering the classes.

If you missed the announcement of the game last week, be sure to catch up on our coverage of the reveal.

No levels is an interesting concept.

Will the game require a subscription ?

No reason not to give the game a try then. I've never been a fan of MMORPGs but this looks like it will be a welcome change in the formula.

Let's hope it has a fair F2P model.

Skill Masteries = Leveling System.

Not that I'm complaining though. It's like leveling in BF games - the more you use something, the more options unlock for it.

I like it - MUCH better than the old treadmill nonsense.

It's not as interesting as it sounds.  Instead of levels you unlock abilities from different classes.  The combination of certain abilities will be more powerful than others.  What this means is that instead of you needing to be X level to go with the group you will need X skills instead.  It will still be based on the time you play, still be based on what you unlock and still have the associated problems of MMO's and everyone being on a different footing.

Im just worried about the terrain build/destruction ability in the game. I worry they might focus on it too much or make it too much of a selling point vs trying to make a better all around game.

I was fine with the original game because I loved the difficulty and the sense of exploration, and the need to work to progress which was satisfying. It forged the community much tighter and everyone was friendly and worked together because of those things. But they kept making the game easier, and they kept enlarging the world so much that everyone was so spread out grouping became less important.

If EQ next can get a strong community like the original did though Ill play the hell out of it because ultimately that is why I stayed with EQ so long was I loved playing with the other people in the game.

Those days are gone my friend :(.  If it isn't easy, on a plate and immediate then most people don't want to play it.

I know, but I can hope hehe.

But ease of use, accessibility to the most people as possible, hand holding, and level of easiness is what ruins a lot of MMOs for me. I loved WOW for a long time but despite its level of ease at first it still had a good community, but the community went to shit once blizzard patched the game into 6 year old mode.

From what I've read you could select from 8 possible starting classes and then organically grow to be one of the 40+.  The 5 listed seem a little small.

I'm going to be really disappointed if they keep the same tired Tolkien-esque fantasy races.  They could use this reboot to introduce atleast a couple nonhumanoid races.

I guess level requirements will be replaced by skill requirements.  Twinkage would become rampant otherwise.

I don't want to see this become Ultima Online with characters in massive full plate casting the most powerful spells.  They better have some system implemented where magic becomes less powerful with the heavier armors.

Still excited for a PS4 release.  Hopefully PC master race and us lowly console peasants can coexist on the same servers.  I will definitely buy a keyboard and mouse if supported.

F2P and MMO: 2 of the criteria required to make a crappy game. This game will be crap indeed.

I really liked Everquest, hope I still like it... my interest toward MMOs kinda died when WoW became a hit. I seriously hate current Blizzard... they used to be cool and we got loads of nice stuff.

What's STO. I know the O probably stands for Online. So what does the ST stand for ? :P

That's a good point. I just wish this game would break entirely from the MMORPG formula, but that's because I haven't found a single one I like. Perhaps the biggest problem I have with them is the grinding. If this game can replace that with meaningful gameplay, I'll be all over it.

Star Trek Online. It has space and ground combat. The space stuff is A LOT of fun, but you gotta like Star Trek.

This game and ArcheAge sounds like awesomeness. After years of WoW ripoffs, I love that there are a whole 2 mmorpgs going sandbox.

The old mmo player in me is not liking a lot of this since everything I have heard it seems another mmo made for casuals. Not many skills to make it easy, fast tracking to success, no levels, ect but I may try it out since it is f2p.

While I would have liked to see some SLIGHT levelling, part of me is relieved at the lack of levelling. Not necessarily because levelling is a bad thing per say, but rather because levelling mechanics tend to be so woefully implemented in mmorpgs.

Instead of me feeling like I actually progress in mmos, the level up system just tends to lock me away from playing with certain other players, discourage me from playing new classes, and lock me away/trivialize what would have otherwise been interesting content.

Interesting. Some of these concepts are actually not original (i.e. multiclassing), but a MMO that manages to pick up all the good parts from a huge sea of MMOs and mix together well will become the true king.
