What would be the point of owning all of the systems if you could play on just one? it provides no incentive to the hardware manufacturers to compete. Being able to have a system seller helps define the console. Nintendo Switch alone will probably have the most exclusives for a console ever. Isn't this a good thing, SW? I ask you because I'm too lazy to create an IGN account.

Agreed somewhat, between the 3 giants Nintendo has the best exclusives.

This, there is nothing good about needing to own 3 consoles and a PC to play every game that appeals. The only time they are completely acceptable is when a small developer does not have the resources to put a game on all systems.

In before the lem MS defense squad comes in to claim that exclusives are outdated and worthless anyway because of sales charts.

Based on sales charts, it seems exclusives are less relevant than ever. But I agree it's the one thing that differentiates the consoles (aside perhaps from "performance" when running multi-plats).

The Wii-U was IMO the first time Nintendo didn't have the best exclusives. Compared even to Wii and Gamecube it was just sad. Though I suppose since they caught the tail end of the PS3 gen and the early PS4 gen some like to argue the Wii-U had the best exclusives. But really, compared to what? Maybe it did in a tiny 1-2 year window when the PS3 was winding down and the PS4 was launching. But compare Wii-U overall exclusives to PS3 and it never caught PS3. Compare WIi-U to PS4 now, and PS4 is destroying it even more, and the Wii-U suffered a premature death. How can anyone in their right mind still say that the Wii-U or Nintendo has the best exclusives?

Now if Switch gets all the 3DS devs on board, it could be more competitive in the exclusives department - possibly even dominate if it gets full support. But we'll see if those handheld devs can translate their handheld games to a HD world at the same pace - even if the Switch is a hit game development might be slower than handhelds.

Good for people to take relatively average games and go ooh aah! An exclusive!

I definitely agree.

Exclusives help give a system it's identity. When I look back at all of the systems that I have owned in my life, the thing that I remember most about each of them is their exclusives.

Exclusives are also the biggest way that companies can compete against each other and competition is good for the consumer. If there were no exclusives then Nintendo would definitely not survive as a console maker which means less competition which is bad for us gamers.

Another great thing about exclusives is some great games would not ever get made if it wasn't for console makers helping to fund the game in return for the game being exclusive to their platform.

Taking a risk on an exclusive can backfire too, when an exclusive game backfires you get a laughing stock like Rise or Knack (or the impending 1-2 Switch). If those games weren't hyped or exclusive they would be forgotten (1-2 Switch actually looks like dollar bin shovelware).

It seems like some exclusives also get unfairly derided. It works both ways IMO. Generally speaking, most big exclusive games are actually good games.

When the majority of the "good" games are 3rd party, and the console that relies on 1st party loses those 3rd party games, that's when it starts to hurt said system.

Lol and why should we care about a home console having an identity or not? Exclusives only benefit these big corporations. They benefit the gamers in no way shape or form. In 2017 still can't play online games with friends on PS4/Xbox One from my PC except for a select few because these big companies don't want me to. Same goes for exclusives.

These consoles are just clones of each other except for the Nintendo ones. Aside from business first, there is no reason exclusives should still exist.

nah, they're more and more meaningless. nintendo has the best exclusives but i have barely played a nintendo console since the N64 and don't feel like i've missed out on anything. eventually everything is going to go through the PC but the only people who don't see that yet are Nintendo and Sony.

I agree with these two ^

Except, I will modify for my view that I do think it is "fine" and justified in most cases - these people are not running a charity and deserve to try to make money as best makes sense for them. Being a game dev is %$#(ing hard, and these companies are struggling. If Sony says "hey, we'll front load / guarantee some profits for you by subsidizing in exchange for making this exclusive to our system", well, fine.

But as a gamer... sure, I think every game being available to everyone would be great

If there is no exclusive, why would big companies like Sony and MS pour in huge capitals to open studios and big budget games?

Competition among exclusives spur the industry forward.

who the hell wants to own all the systems if you can just play everything on one

imo, exclusives should only exist on a system if that system has some unique capability/limitation that the others dont, and the exclusive takes advantage of that unique capability/is built with the limitation in mind.

back in the day, movies were only shown as company theaters (like MGM theaters only showed MGM movies). So if you wanted to see a movie you'd have to go to a specific theater. This died off because it was inconvenient for consumers to have to drive to different theaters to see different movies. I am hoping the same thing will happen with console exclusives.

At least go console exclusive with a PC release. Give your First Party Devs a fighting chance to compete against third party multiplats and gain more sales.

Consoles having identity? Are you people for real? Have your brain been so thoroughly rinsed by corporations that you believe that exclusives are in the best interest of gamers? Logic disagrees. Anyone trying to argue to the contrary is tossing logic outside of the window. Exclusives don't make games better. Good developers make good games and make games better. Competition will ALWAYS exist once there are multiple game developers fighting for your money. Every company that makes an exclusive is loosing potential sales and is segregating the gaming community for the sake of childish console identity. Its a shame that the industry has not grown up. We still have so many man children who are defending anti consumer practices and believe that their console of choice is something to be proud of.

Death to exclusive. Its time the industry grew the hell up. We are the only form of entertainment which are constrained by our entertainment being locked to hardware as a common practice. Or and lets not pretend that multiplats DOMINATE on each platform.

How many brands of TVs are there? All these TVs allows the viewer to view any compatible content. Has the competition dwindled in TVs? Why would there be an absence of competition if all three systems can play the same games?

The same way people decide on which television to buy, features and price. I don't see how that was so hard for you to figure out. Now that has been addressed how about dealing with my questions and points which you are trying very hard to avoid.

In this case the content is also part of the competition. As long as they make hardware, game exclusivity will always exist in some form. Whether its marketing or pure first party exclusive. Nintendo is not going to release there games on ps4 while they have there platform out there. Microsoft treats this as very much console competition they are not going to put there stuff on ps4. Don't let minecraft fool you or the move to in bold there service and interest on pc. Microsoft market there games as competing with Sony. Do you not see the marketing language even after the pc move. Exclusives are being used as competition watch Microsoft talk about there e3 line up that is not on Sony's or Nintendo platform and how it make xbox the best place to play.

Maybe its not good for gamers but what the **** is going on with SW now days. What happened to ps4 has no games or xbox has nothing despite them swimming in multiplats back then.

This topic is actually a bit more complicated that a simple yes or no. Long story short they are bad for the gamers as they benefit only the companies that make them but they're also good in their own way because they push the competition which is always a positive factor in an open market/economy.

P.S. This thread had some very nice and thoughtful replies until the usual basement dweller trolls came in and derailed it into another console dispute.
