Another used game market basher with... An interesting story.

http://au.gamespot.com/news/used-market-killing-single-player-games-says-ex-thq-exec-6371576

Glitchspot won't let me link.

"The rumors that next-generation systems from Microsoft and Sony will prevent owners from playing used games have proven unpopular with gamers, but the idea is getting some support from the development and publishing community. The latest voice urging the console makers to block secondhand games on their next systems belongs to former THQ vice president of core games Richard Browne.

In an editorial published yesterday on GamesIndustry International, Browne said he "would actively encourage Microsoft and Sony to embrace the 'Nuclear Option'" and block used games, arguing that the aftermarket for games has a variety of detrimental effects on the industry as a whole. In particular, he said the idea of single-player games is dying, as publishers divert funds to create tacked-on multiplayer modes in the hopes they will keep players holding on to the discs rather than selling them back into the used market."

Browne got it all wrong. It's ONLINE PASSES that make companies put in tacked on MP. Not used games themselves.

Maybe if devs stop overcooking budgets and take into account that an aftermarket exists, then they wouldn't be in a better position and blaming such things.

Maybe used sales wouldn't be such a big deal for THQ if they made sure more of their games were actually worth keeping after the first play through...

Maybe if people could return a crappy game to the store, there would be less games in the used market. Of course, that probably wouldn't make these developers feel better.

Developers: the most self-entitled people in the games industry.

I wouldn't support a platform that attempts to block used games. I don't support PC as a gaming platform as it is.

Neither piracy or used games are killing anything.

Maybe just maybe if current gen developers didn't spend all the money on GRAPHICS, but instead made unique games that can still look good and be fun to play people would actually pay up for new games.

For people to buy "Used", someone has to sell it first.

Make a great game with great FREE DLC to enhance lifespan so the player doesn't sell their copy.

Funny I can find like 50 copies of MW3 in shops but find it hard to buy unique games 2nd hand.

Used games? Funny, I always thought it was unambitious developers wanting to cash in on the CoD hype.

Browne mentioned how used games were never ever the issue for years of all the companies he been working for. Its the business practice Gamestop is in question is scaring alot of these publishers now. Gamestop would be willing to sell used games a week after its launch, causing more risk for the publisher.

Dev budgets aren't actually that much of an issue with games, marketing budgets are a bigger issue. The movie industry though has insane budgets these days, it's no wonder you're losing money when it cost $100mil to film and $300mil to market.

Used games are killing publisher's profit margins. With the way it works currently the retailer makes the majority of the cash off a used sale, if that money is diverted to the publisher the customer still pays the same amount and the publishers get more money.
