Why are wii shortages so extreme? I figure Nintendo has done so on purpose to create high demand and get press for outrageous ebay prices. Lets face it, this is actually a good idea by Nintendo. At the same time, if VGChartz are even halfway accurate the 360 looks to be the winner this Holiday Season.TerroRizing
AHAHAHH!!!
Wii outsold it last month, without japan 360 wont beat anything and on top of that its losing european support(i think).

The 360 last week (according to VGChartz) was the top seller in the USA.....but was last in Japan and the Rest of the World.

exactly what I said.
This thread is a failure . . . . .
BTW Nintendo wont see any benefit at all from high ebay prices. And no they are not creating short supply, that is retarded to do before christmas, since during this time there is always demand. haols
Its a marketing technique, and it works.

You should really learn some economics.
Firstly, nintendo makes no money from what people sell on ebay, zilcho.
Second supply and demand works like this (to put it simply)
The higher the demand, the more you can charge. Since nintendo doesn't change the price for the Wii (again ebay is PEOPLE selling stuff, not ninty) creating a short supply is stupid.

Yep, just affirming what you said....it seemed more like a question there at the end.

Its not economics, its marketing. Do some research on marketing techniques. The first company to use this technique was apple, and it damn well works.
Nintendo is artificially limiting the supply of Wiis in order to increase demand. It helps create a buzz about the product and can also cause consumers to impulse buy the product because of the shortages. Apple did the same with with the iPod, I'm not sure about the numbers but I think it worked out for them.PBSnipes
After looking at last week's projected sales number for the USA (from VGChartz...yeah...whatever..) I don't know if I can disagree with you. I mean they only had like 180K in place for one of the biggest weeks of the entire year. That just boggles my mind.

It only makes sense in todays world, information travels fast and the nintendo wii will appear more popular than it truly is. When more are on the shelf people will buy them right away since they are so hard to find and people are paying crazy prices, and doing crazy things for them on the news.
wasnt this debunked already :S .. something like they make 2.5 million a month? or was it 1.5?PC360Wii
Nintendo says they make 1.8 million per month.
But that's been for th past 3 atleast that they've been making that many per month. What have they done with all the sysems they haven't sold in that time. Because they haven't been selling 1.8 mil per month ever since they upped production. There should be plenty for the holidays.

They sold 900k in the US in November.. and probably the other 900k in Europe and Japan.

"It's staggering," said James Lin, senior analyst at the MDB Capital Group in Santa Monica, Calif., who estimates that Nintendo is leaving $1.3 billion on the table. "They could easily sell double what they're selling."New York Times

No. The marketing/promotion plan only works when you have an elite product with no substitute products.
For instance, extreme high performance cars have been intentionally supply limited at times....because people want that specific car.
Or in technology...when a new product is released and there are no competitors with substitute products.
This is not the case with the Wii...there are two substitute products... and a portion of those disappointed will opt for the substitute. A friend of mine did this last week...was going to get a family Wii...he bought a 360 instead.
Wii shortages are hurting Nintendo not helping.

I hate the spreading of this rumor.
Prove it?
So.. Nintendo would throw away billions of dollars in both hardware and software sales, and an extremely important Christmas season, to artificially create demand? You would think after a year of doing that (not saying they have been doing that), they wouldn't need to anymore?user_natQFT, I can't believe people actually believe Nintendo would limit supplies during the holiday season.
actually its not such a good idea on nintendos part, ppl are gonna get TIRED of waiting for wii's,so there gonna go for a ps3 or 360..SaintsRowSam
IT ISN'T NINTENDO'S FAULT.
And even then, they are selling SO MANY consoles in comparison to the other two that even if a handful of people went to the Ps3 or 360, it wouldn't even matter.
They aren't superhumans, they can't meet demand.
They are making about 1.8 million consoles a MONTH.
That is so much.
And by the time they invest in more factories, the 'rush' might be over.
:/ sheesh.

Microsoft did exactly the same thing at the start of this gen - they only had a small number of consoles available at launch, so that the media would report that it had instantly sold out everywhere.
Having said that, it would be a totally stupid move on Nintendo's part if they deliberately limited their Christmas sales.
It's two days before Christmas, and the Wii is the most wanted console in the world...
Think about that, the world, Nintendo has quite a few orders to fill, and they've been struggling to fill that demand since day one. Why is demand so high? Great product? Solid pricing? Strong advertising? Whatever the case may be, getting your hands on a Wii is no easy task.
I never knew the Wii was in such short supply until what happened a few days ago.
So my sister wants to get a Wii for her daughter, right? Problem is, she waited until December 20th to start looking. WHY?! Imagine a city overlapped by a half-circle radius of 100 miles. That's how many Gamestops I called. Every single one within 100 miles below my city. Every single one was sold out. I called Movie Galleries (some sell game consoles); all sold out. I called Wal-Marts; gone. I called Targets, Radioshacks, FYEs, Best Buys, Circuit Cities, Toys 'R' Us's, KB Toy's, K-Marts and every place in between and NONE of them had a Wii. Somehow my sister's husband managed to get one, but I don't know how.
I'm a horrible person.
The other day I was watching one of those Early Shows and they were chatting real fast with some family.
The host or whatever asked the kids what they wanted for xmas....
The little 8 year old boy said "I wanna Wii"
AND I LAUGHED.
SO HARD.
I just thought to myself "GOOD LUCK, LOSER."
