You'll find a few stragglers on SW who'll agree; I am not one of them, however. My personal favorite is FFIX, the characters have way more dimensions to them than others in the other FF installments, plus the amount of homage that game pays to its predecessors is staggering.
I found FFVIII to be easily the best while FFIX was the worst. FFVII in between.Arach666I've just lost all faith in you Arach. I do not think I will be finishing SS2 now.

But now, now I know what your tastes in games are like and will not consider playing it again now.
FF IX was awesome. I loved Zidane, Vivi and the rest. You'll find a few stragglers on SW who'll agree; I am not one of them, however. Y´all have terrible taste.
My favorite is Final Fantasy VIII. Reasons is because i conntected to the story more and characters were great, especially Zell. Overall the gameplay was fun and entertaining.
Final Fantasy VII is my second favorite Final Fantasy then followed by Final Fantasy X then IX.
Please tell me you're joking :|My favorite is Final Fantasy VIII. Reasons is because i conntected to the story more and characters were great, especially Zell.

FFIX was the best on the PS1 days. VII had the most impact on the genre I think but hasn't really aged well.
This, 7 really bored me tbh, the story and the gameplay of collecting materia wasnt my cup of tea.I know that there are many FF7 loyalists here, but in my opinion is goes FF8>FF9>>>FF7.

I'm not the type to hate on 7 because it's popular. But I'm also not a rookie who thiks It's better then 6. That said it's 7,9,8 for the PS1 era. I thought 8 was crap. Almost as bad as 13.
I can never understand those that said 13 was crap, yes it lacked a lot of the features that makes an ff game, but it was far from a crap game.I'm not the type to hate on 7 because it's popular. FF8>FF7Your poor child, well, maybe it'll be fine, I doubt kids these days, or those days will be able to put it together. My daughter will be named RinoaDiviniuz

FF8 was fun, but the junction system was an abosolute disaster. Overpowered characters to the max.

Disaster, no, but it did make characters overpowered if you did enough grinding. It's my favorite partly out of nostalgia. I think, overall, that IX is a better, more balanced game.

The last time I played the game I did it without grinding. Somehow this ended up being one of my most overpowered playthroughs.
Still a fun game though. I love it.
VIII is the only PS1 game I've played for a significant amount of time (I finished it). Barely played IX, & only an hour or two out of Midgar in FFVII. While 8 is the best FF I've played, VII had this great atmosphere while in Midgar, but seemed to be lost when I left. IX seemed really interesting, but I literally only got to move the cloaked character through two sections (in some town/city - Something was going on like a circus or something?).
Anyway, yeah, FF8 is the best FF I've played that I've given a proper chance.
I personally loved them all, but my list would be,
FF7> FF8=FF9
I actually only played FF7 just last year, and thus I started for my newfound appreciation for Final Fantasy. Currently playing 12 now and loving it, but I'm kinda scared of trying 13. Nobody seems to like it :/
For me, yes it is better than FF7, in fact FF8 is my favorite FF game as well as my favorite JRPG in the PS1.
