I used to think mario, but now its all about the moody spartan, Kratos. Unlike the others on that poll he has a personality and motives for his actions.clembo1990

Yes but when "I" think about gaming thats what i think about. Which was the topic ;)
This is the only situation where popularity actually means something.
Mario and Pikachu are by far the most popular and recognizable gaming figures in the history of gaming.
Games sold:
Mario ~ +200 million
Master Chief ~ 20 million
Kratos ~ 5 million
Gordon Freeman ~ 16 million
The top list of most recognizable faces based on number of games sold would probably be as follows:
Mario ~ +200 million
Pikachu/Pokemon ~ 180 million
Link ~ 52 million
Sonic ~ 50 million
Donkey Kong ~ 48 million
Crash Bandicoot ~ 40 million
Tomb Raider ~ 35 million
Kirby ~ 30 million
Mega Man ~ 28 million
Metal Gear ~ 22 million
Master Chief isn't as popular as people make him out to be.foxhound_fox
Mario was bundled with the NES.

English is a disturbingly confusing language. God bless Germany, you know exactly what they are trying to say even if you don't speak German :P
"What do you ->addressing moi und everyone else
think of when you think of->lol maketh no sense at all
gaming overall?" - >missing a comma i.e. " gaming, overall?" the"overall" in this sense is reffering to across the borad spectrum of gaming, not you (as in all you gamers) think of as the poster child for the gaming industry.
I think that's what the TC is implying at all, otherwise it'd be a pretty obvious question answered by Google.
Kratos and Gordan Freeman Are not even close to the face of gaming. It is silly to even think they are.
Pac-Man should be on the list also. The face of gaming is game icons. The ones the anyone will know and not only the gamers. Everyone knows who pac-man or Mario is and I am sure master Chief is really close to them also.
This is the only situation where popularity actually means something. This list would mean more though if they added how many games it took for those games to get there. I am not saying Mario is not the most popular because he is. I am just saying there has been a MArio rpg, golf games, racing game, platform, 4 gens worth of games. I think this list does not have Halo 3 either it seems like a old list.I remember seeing this a long time ago. I would not be shocked if Halo passed the 22 million and that is with only 3 games. I know VG Charts sucks but best I have. It says Halo has sold more then 22 million
