Enough with talk that Nintendo winning this gen spells doom for the industry.

All the current consoles are innovating.  They are all evolving the way we play games.

Lemmings and cows say that different controls don't change the way we play games.

I submit to you that, realistically, everyone on this forum would rather be controlling games through an interface like this:

Than an interface like this:

At least, we'd all like that someday.  I think.

The path Wii is taking is the one that will get us there.

It's not any more of a "true evolution" than the Xbox was.

Perhaps a bit of an exageration, as we don't know for sure right now, but the point holds merit. The problem, however, is that nobody is taking the interface seriously. Right now, we're just getting same-old, same-old, and same-old with tacked-on motion sensing. Hopefully No More Heroes changes that. >_>

Indeed.  The software isn't there yet.

We're still waiting for Wii's truly breakout software product.

Wii Sports is just the beginning.

Input devices are never going to change unless someone makes the effort to really change them.

This generation, only Nintendo has really done that.

It's a logical extrapolation.

Obviously things need to change in a while. But people keep using this logic that the wii will kill the industry.

How is it that expanding the industry a bad thing now?

Guess the ps2 killed gaming huh?

imho there is no one true path. console controllers maybe old in terms of their design prnciples but they still do a nice job for alot of games and can be even more suited to certain games like beat em ups or certain platformers. personally id prefer to play POP with a GC controller than with the wiimote. The keyboard and mouse are probably the oldest controls setup in gaming and they still work very very well for alot of games. i get all my FPSs, strategy and RPG games on my PC where possible.

the wii isnt a one true path. its a different direction that nintendo have taken and its fantastic that they have done it. I hope that they contuinue to evolve the controller tech over the generations. variety is the spice of life as they say and i love to play games in different ways. the wiimote and nunchuck also provide unique opportunities to devs which will hopefully be fully exploited in the future.

but its not going to replace older controllers or mouse and keyboard. Its just another way of playing games. is it better? well that really a matter of opinion.

How did they take a step backwards when the Wii is more powerful than any of last gen's systems?

why would he need a link to make an argument????  I hate people who say "Do you have a link???" whenever someone makes an argument.  All he's doing is making a logical argument, of his own opinion.

I deem this thread.....no.

The fact is....nobody wants to play FF XIII (a verrrry long game) flailing their arms about....Wii's controller is a gimmick...and it happens to be the only reason the Wii has sold so well.

No.  Wii might be helping gameplay evolve but it lacks the hardware power and features that would make it a frontrunner in the true evolution of gaming.  Out of all the consoles PS3 is probably the closest to being the machine that is making gaming evolve because it many ways it is BUT an ideal situation for myself would be a PC buolt for Vista and DX10 games with a Wiimote adapted to it for some games.

Note that I'm not contending that X360/PS3 aren't evolving gaming in their own way.

I think advanced AI and such are needed to advance gaming as well.

Until we get to virtual reality, the controller works just fine. And the Wiimote is NOT going to be the f*cking catalyst towards virtual reality, let me promise you this right now.

Thompsonwhore

Please show me where I suggested that the Wii-mote would lead to virtual reality.

You never did... I never said you did, either. I said that the controller works fine, and until we have virtual reality, I doubt there's going to be something to replace it.

I agree completely. I'm just saying, that's not the kind of VR I'd like to take over traditional controllers or keyboard/mouse.

if there is a downward trend in games it is not the wii's fault.  You should not be angry at nintendo for adding a device into the market, you should be angry at the other developers for making a product that can be defeated by old tech with new controllers.  ps3 and 360 are stale, the games are not revolutionary by any means, and maybe that's why the wii is succeeding at the moment.  at least you could argue that point about the wii.

and really, no one has been defeated or victorious yet.  something like 200 million consoles were sold last gen, and so far this gen there less than 20 million sold.

Not fact, Opinion!  I have yet to have a better gaming experience on the Wii than I had with my 360, my Xbox, or even my Dreamcast.  Zelda was great, but I've done it all before.  Everything else is bland, shallow, and a step sideways.

Sometimes you have to step sideways in order to move forward.

PS3's and X360's controllers are both gimmicks, and the Wii-mote is the optimal control interface.

Fact - Nintendo conned the world into buying a repackaged Gamecube for over twice the cost, just so people can use a crazy new controller.

I'll also have to concur. When the N64 came out with that mini-thumbstick I thought it was geniunely stupid. Nowadays, it's an absolute necessity to console gaming.
