I guess this is in reference to Nintendo and their "we can't meet demands". Right... I'm sure they would be saying the same thing if the Wii wasn't selling as good as it is. Simply economics though, only it makes me want to beat Regie and the Nintendo brass in the face with a 2 by 4.

Now that I think about it it could be possible. I don't know if they are nexecessarily shortages I think it's that Nintendo is shipping just enough to meet it's quarterly earnings.

No, it's called making demand, if people want it then they will buy it, and if there are little left, they will try and get one even quicker. Business tactics my friend, that is Best Buys doing, not Nintendo's and while it seems like crude business practises, Best Buy knows that the Wii is again going to be the hot item at Christmas time, especially with more games out now.

I will, if called upon, retrieve my posts going back at least 10 months prior to this TC's point ; stating this and for bonus show the pointy teeth sheep who attacked in sheep packs as they still do now ( try pointing out SMG is not this gen and should not be compared to this gen when it coulda been done on the GC - less that oh so innovative power gl - oops I mean Wiimote ) ) for pointing this fraud of a marketing scheme out !

Nintendo will never ever be back in my good graces as a V.G. provider as the sheep on this site have even further drove me away from such a greedy deceptive company as Nintendo really is !! :?

Thats so true, seeing as BEst buy is owned by Nintendo and tells them how to do their day to day business. Never seen a Best buy that wasn't a sleezy selling store .

Pretty stupid move on Best Buy's part IF it's true. 1 store wouldn't mean the rest of the world. Not only that but there are hundreds of other stores that don't do this and sell out in hours. Case in point, Target. Got ~50 Wiis in Sunday. Sold out in about an hour.

ok . . . logic should be kicking in . . right about . . . NOW! First of all this a story about the business practices Best Buy is using in selling the Wii. Secondly, the Wii has outsold all other systems every month of this year. If Nintendo really was holding back supply, they must be doing a crappy job since they're getting more Wii's in he hands of consumers then Microsoft or Sony.

It's genious marketing strategy by best buy, but it has nothing to do with Nintendo at all, and their shortages are actually real, as proven by the sales figures?

Well maybe you all are correct as this is only One retailer but for the life of me - I can not come up with a logical reason why the Wii made by the oldest H.W. MFG in the V.G. business today is in short supply knowing it has the lowest and most plentiful H.W. tech to MFG mass quantities to satisfy customer requirements.

Me = perplexed on this from the Wii release till now. :?

It's the fastest selling console of all time. No one expected it to sell as well as it is, not even Nintendo. If you think it is simple to just 'make more', think again.

If this is such a 'winning' strategy to create a fake shortage, what is holding Sony and MS back from doing the same? And why doesn't Nintendo do it with the DS? That seems to be selling more than anything, and you buy one no problem.

Your abbreviations are an eyesore...

The components aren't nearly as plentiful as you've been lead to believe. This is connected to the false assumption that the Wii isn't new hardware. The wiimotes use a very specific set of components which is fairly new and is protected intellectually. There is also intellectual property on the specific arrangement of components. There is also newer hardware that consumes less power resulting in a stable console (i.e. no RROD).

These specialized components may be selling like hotcakes in the Wii but have little use elsewhere as of yet. This means that production expansion is a waste of resources. It's the equal to speeding up to a red light.

Finally, these articles are about a retailer, not Nintendo. It is sleazy and unethical and comes very close to breaking several anti-trust laws (if it doesn't ctually cross the line). It also is doing more to hinder the overall success of the individual store. Wii's are obviously moving. By not having one on the floor for 40 minutes you lose out on an unknown number of potential sales. You tie up an employee who could be used more effectively elsewhere. You create a bad reputation with consumers and consumers tell other consumers and you lose customers (as is illustrated by the journalist).

This doesn't belong in SW...

On topic, I'm still not convinced at this time but appreciate what you are trying to say.

Yes, I do believe this topic belongs on SW.

PS: to alleviate you're struggles of interpreting abbreviations.

H.W. = hardware / MFG. = manufacturing.

There is more involved in the production of any console than just the hardware involved. There are also limits placed on production capacity by plant and workforced limits. Nintendo is producing and selling more systems per month than any other system in history. They have been able to increase supply since launch, but that sells out too. The only other available option would be to open more manufacturing plants, which would be a longterm and very costly solution. (I know there was talk back at the first part of the year that they were looking into this.) At some point demand is going to level off, just certainly not this holiday season. It would be very foolish to me to start the process of bringing a new plant on line to meet demand that may not be there 6 months from now.

But yeah, Best Buy is sleazy doing this. However, at least this way they won't be selling the consoles to ebay sellers :)

Maybe just a little - thanks for noticing. :)

Though you know I have had the feeling and expressed it many times about the artificial shortage to keep demand high.

I mean it has been a year now - but okay will see what happens in the next 6 months.

I'm going new gaming PC or Wii for the holiday but if the Wii is still not on the shelves - what's a gamer to do ? :?

I always thought practices like this are common and that eveyone knows about them, I guess not. In one online store they have a similar advertisement touting how the special offer product is almost sold out....and it's been up there for half a year already...

best buy is really shady, but overall the shortage is real imo
