I've been demanding a new 2D Mario for YEARS now, so of course I bought this right away. It is a great game, and the best part is my wife was a big gamer in the 2d days but has never really gotten into newer games. So it's good we can play this together. The game is really good and definitely brings me back to the SNES days of gaming.
The game is very much reminiscent of Mario 3 in the way the words and bosses and powers all work. And much like the GS reviews points out, it gets TOUGH. I'm on world 3 and I'm sure my wife and I have died 30 times each, if not more already. But it isn't the bad/cheap sort of tough.
My only beefs with the game are the lack of Yoshi, and when yo DO get Yoshi, it isn't the Yoshi from Mario World. He doesn't have powers from eating turtle shells. But regardless, I'd still would've liked more Yoshi. The graphics in this game are made of 3d, even though they are presented in 2D, and I personally think that results in the graphics NOT being as good as they could have been if they were 2d animations. The game doesn't have that same pop that Mario World has. But maybe that is just me. I'm playing the game on an HD big screen and that tends to make a lot of Wii games look a little worse than they really are. My other beef is although the game is multiplayer, the levels weren't really designed with that in mind. The levels are GREAT, but when you are playing with more than one person, you get in each others way a lot and will die almost as much from someone getting in your way as from actual enemies.
But those are all minor complaints. The game is fun, challenging, full of secrets to find/unlock, and long overdue.
