first things first, the 360 is an awesome system no matter what any one says. But i always get the feeling they blew the 1 year lead they had. At first, the 360 had a slow start but then it gained momentum after some really good games came out. I thought to myself that the 360 should establish a good lead with other consoles not released yet. However, the opposite happened. They had hardware issues, which they solved, but i know a few people who changed their minds about the 360 after hearing about the problems. So i think the hardware issues brought down their sells.

Also, the 360 only managed to sell 11.6 millions so far (not updated), which has already been suprassed by the wii. The ps3 is lacking in sales right now, i agree, but with the 399 version hitting stores before the holiday season, the ps3 will pick up. The fact that the 360 has the best games, but fell to the Wii really sucks.

The flagship title of the 360 was Halo 3, and now Halo 3 has come and gone. Halo 3 did push the sales of the 360, but the threat of Halo is over for at least 3 years. Although many good 360 games are coming out in the future, there wont be any game that will push the sales of the 360 like Halo 3 did.

So in conclusion, the 360 is major hit with there awesome games and online. But little mistakes with the system cost them so much. This gen is far from over, but i dont think gain to much momentum like the ps3 will, or the wii is doing right now.

Im not flaming the 360, its an awesome system, and is a better than the other consoles as of right now.

Did they blow what? 360 has been a success so far. Let's not compare minors to the pros here. Sony and Nintendo are giants to the gaming market. Microsoft is doing their best to compete. They may not sale 50+ million units like Sony or Nintendo, but that doesn't mean they blew it.

The only blunder MS has made this gen is with the hardware.Otherwise, they've done a good job.

Oh and the year head start did help them, it made them have a large lead in install base over the PS3 and its the reason games like GTA,DMC4,SC4 went multplatform.

i think microsoft is doing a better marketing job than sony, but probably a bit worst than nintendo
they have gathered a great number of exclusives, and they try to penetrate the japanese market with a score of rpg titles, even getting square to release an rpg, and lost odyssey with past members of square
but i thing people are stil biased about the xbox considering its last gen effort

basically, i think they are trying hard to make it one worthwhile console, and i'd say that up to now, they are succeding
and they can build on a strong base of great titles, and the future holds more titles and diversity

GeoW2 won't be enough either... honestly I get the impression that over in the states people don't realise just how badly the rest of the world resents MicroSoft and their business practices. This goes back as far as the mid 90s, they make Sony look like charity by comparsion. We all use PCs cause we have to, there's no choice. But there's no way we're actively gonna support em by buying the 360. Even if it does have the best games for "blowing **** up", probably another eason it sells so well in the states.

Whats with this "the PS3 will gain momentum" nonsense people are clinging to.

Do people even realise the console race is NOT EVEN CLOSE. The Wii is destroying and the PS3 will NOT outsell it for a very, very long time: never, in all probability. Its virtually impossible for the PS3 to catch the 360 in NA, so its a race to see who can outdo who in Europe whilst both float dead in the water in Japan.

Microsoft have gained market share: guarenteed. There is no disputing this point. They are popping the champagne over at the Xbox HQ, I think its time the rest of you got with reality.

why do you think the threat of halo is over... this bump in sales will only intensify into the holiday season.. plenty of people can buy a 360 at any time with their own money while younger teens and children have to wait until christmas etc. The people who play this game over their friends house are going to want to get in on the action as well... halo launch will continue to pay dividends. As a sales analyst, thats the most likely scenario.

sigh...You have to be a fanboy to think 360 is remotely as good when the PS2 was release. PS2 had the casual market and the hardcore market. 360 only has the hardcore market, and not all of it because some are on PC. Casuals are now flocking to the Wii. Sales shows that both PS3 and 360 are notselling well. I put my money on the PS3 to get the casual market back before the 360 does.

How did they "steal" the games if the publishers just decided to make the games multiplatform on their own?

And regardless, its great for the 360 as GTA and DMC were among the biggest system sellers for the ps2 last gen and this time, they're multiplatform and in some cases, even better on the 360.

You also have to remember that the Wii is $250, I mean I dont think that is hard to understand. If it was up there in price it would not be where it is right now.

First, I've said this a millions times and I will put it on my tombstone if I have to: the headstart has NEVER MATTERED EVER in the videogames world. The first console of a gen has never been the #1 console ever. That alone should be proof that there is more to success than simply coming out first.

Second, it is still too early yeat to see what will ultimately happen. This gen has started slower than most and I think most customers are still waiting to make up their mind between the 360 and PS3. HOwever, NO customer will wait forever. So over the next two years as more games come out, people move away from the PS2, and prices drop some more, we will see which console customers move to.

Finally, MS didn't blow anything. Aside from the hardware issues, they have one of the best game libraries built up this early than any other console I can remember. The only problem I still have, and probably many other consumers, is that there is still no sign that MS has truly diversified their library. Their biggest weakness with the Xbox was the very heavy focus on FPS and arcade racers and other casual type games like sports titles. For an RPG gamer like myself, or somebody who like a wide range of games and DOESN'T play FPS or arcade racers...the Xbox simply wasn't a choice. Sure they had Fable and KOTOR, but 2 games does not trump dozens and dozens regardless of the scores.

The 360 has a GREATLY improved library over the Xbox. However, i still can't help but feel that if I want to have all kinds of games that AREN'T FPS or arcade racer or sports, I should maybe look elsewhere. Which console is going to get all the RPGs? Which console is going to get great original titles like Shadow of the COlossus? Which console is going have the most surprise hits? It's still to early to tell but if MS hopes to ever take the #1 spot, they need to now fill out their diverse library instead of just having a couple token games.

ZIMdoom

MS is working on improving this that is why we have seen Blue Dragon &Eternal Sonata and we will be getting Lost Odyssey, Infinite Discovery, Last Remanant, and Fable 2.

This first person shooter issue is one that not only MS faces. Shooters have become very popular. Resistance was considered the best PS3 game at launch, and Socom, Haze, UT 3, and Killzone 2 are also being hyped for the PS3. There is just an over abundance of shooters right now.

I think popping the champagne at Xbox HQ is a bit premature until they manage to have a year where they actually make more money than they lose. Never happened with the x-box, hasn't happened yet with the 360.

first things first, the 360 is an awesome system no matter what any one says.

There is only one thing that made me not want a 360. The fact that it is the most UNreliable console in console history. And the three year warranty is a joke to me. Why you ask. Because I plan on playing my console for more than three years.

first off i dont think that the 400 dollar ps3 will push sales all that much because you have to have a reason to put that money down in the first place and blue ray doesnt seem to be reason enough

also im pretty sure that M$ did not technically blow it (though a havingakiller app when the 360 was released might have been a good descion) I just think nintendo, knowing it was their last shot, really brought their A game and it happened to be a smarter game than M$. So they got beaten out.

myself i wasnt ready to miss out on gaming this generation, and while sony is too expensive and has no good games out yet for me, and the wii is about as interesting to me as watching paint dry while swinging around a stick, the 360 is there with good games, a decent price, np unnecessary accessories (wii-mote, blu-ray)
yea my 360 might break, but its covered and in 3 years time im hopefull those issues will be fixed
beyond that, havent had a problem with 360

Things are looking up for Microsoft even if and when Sony announces the new 40GB SKU.... They have a decent variety and amount of titles(even though they could use more platforming & action/adventure titles)... As far as Sony's monster titles........

1. Devil May Cry - Multiplatform

2. Metal Gear Solid 4 - Even though Kojima wants it to remain on the PS3, Konami is seeing dollar signs in the MS user base

3. Resident Evil 5 - Multiplatform

4. Grand Theft Auto 4 - Multiplatform

5. Final Fantasy XIII- Square Enix is slowly giving MS support. This may be a prelude to something bigger.

Sony will still have God Of War, Gran Turismo 5 & Killzone........ But even if FF XIII doesn't come to the 360, Microsoft's RPG monster Mistwalker may cause problems for SE and Sony..... Microsoft doesn't need the Japanese market to be successful... Just its developers because everyone plays Japanese titles everywhere.... Every other big title is Microsoft 360 exclusive or multiplatform.

At this point, Sony needs a miracle and a half to not finish third in this generation......

Was Microsoft's goal to win the console war?

or was it to be profitable and close the gap between then and Sony?

Lets not forget that there was almost a 100 million console gap between MS and Sony last gen, and as long as there is improvement over the Xbox user base I think they have done what they are looking to do.

As for if they "blew their lead" I guess time will tell?

What makes you so sure no other 360 games will push sales?

i dont, what i meant to say is not like Halo 3 did

it goes without saying the Ps3 has nothing to push sales like Halo 3 did. Halo 3 is a cult hit almost a religion to some gamers.

They are popping the champagne over at the Xbox HQ, I think its time the rest of you got with reality.

why not does the 360 surppass the number of xbox, gamecube,ps 2 sales in na not even close what happen from 2008 on to next gen the ps 3 out sale it 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1. they catch up no. ps 3 is not dead in japan at all the ps 3 sells more in na than the 360 sales in japan no. ps 3 has sold 1 million so far in japan in 11 mouths how is that dead. maybe not as good as wii. but think about it wii out sells 360 43 to 1 while it sales 4 to 1 big differance so don't say ps 3 is dead in japan. once the casual first party games hit ps 3 in na like getaway, eye of judgement, homeect. there all casual games then a 399 price tag you will see casual flock to the ps 3 because they get to still play those last gen gta ect. casual plus the first party casual games. there is alot of them to like getaway, god of war, rachet and clank ect. all will only be on the ps 3.

I wouldn't say Microsoft blew it, but I do think they could have taken better advantage of their one year lead and been in a better position today. Their software has been very strong, and that's been their biggest credit so far. Since launch the 360 has had a good library. But the hardware has been a little problematic. They had those shortages at first, and then all the product failures.

Now that they're approaching year 3 while the other 2 systems their second year they're still in a good spot, but I don't think they're in a position that their lead is untouchable by Sony.

ianuilliam

I think popping the champagne at Xbox HQ is a bit premature until they manage to have a year where they actually make more money than they lose. Never happened with the x-box, hasn't happened yet with the 360.

agreed noone is popping champagne in ms gaming division just yet, they have yet to turn a profit on the xbox brand since its inception, including 360, if it werent for the extended warranties they may have turned a profit by early next year but their profit forecasts have been pushed back atleast 1 fiscal year.

Did they blow what? 360 has been a success so far. Let's not compare minors to the pros here. Sony and Nintendo are giants to the gaming market. Microsoft is doing their best to compete. They may not sale 50+ million units like Sony or Nintendo, but that doesn't mean they blew it.

first things first, the 360 is an awesome system no matter what any one says.

What makes you so sure no other 360 games will push sales?

i dont, what i meant to say is not like Halo 3 did

Non of the other consoles have a Halo like game either but MS had Gears 2 which is pretty big too.
