Thanks to an interview posted over at CVG, we've learned that Ubisoft's upcoming shooter Far Cry 2 sports some 50 hours of gameplay. Now that should be more than enough for a first-person shooter, I think.

"Just on single-player alone, gamers can potentially have close to 50 hours of game play. Add the multi-player experience and the map editor... gamers will have their money's worth with Far Cry 2," says Producer Louis-Pierre Pharand.

I must say that after Crysis I haven't seen a better looking FPS. Sure it didn't show any mercy towards my poor PC and I know plenty of gamers feel the same way. As for Far Cry 2, it seems to have come a long way since we've last witnessed it (about a year ago). We're eager to see how it turns out.

Today's news section features fresh screens and a trailer for Far Cry 2, just in case you missed it.

Only 50? I know that might come across as rediculous, but you should be able to sink 100+ hours into a free-roam game like Far Cry 2 no problem.

Sorry, shooters shouldn't be that long unless they have a ton of elements, you can only do the same things for so long without getting bored, Serious Sam 2 proved that.

You've got the right idea. Devs always lie about the length of their games. I would guess even lower than you, maybe 15-17 hrs.

But games are generally getting shorter these days. In favor of multiplayer, single player shooters are mostly getting shortened or slapped together. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see it happening.

Cut that time in half, and you'll probably get Far Cry 2's actual campaign length.

Mass Effect was supposed to be "50 hours," too. Turned out it was only worth about 12 hours for the main campaign, and the remaining 38 hours were for worthless, repetitive side missions that literally used the same map a hundred times over.

Considering it's supposed to be a completely open free-roaming game, I'm sure it's possible to sink 50 hours into it. But I doubt you need to in order to complete the game.

Considering how sand-boxy it is, the actual final playtime could be much, much shorter. But because it's so open, there are probably a lot of different ways to play through the game.

Funny, i remember hearing mass effect was supposed to be more like 30 hours, but that is besides the point. Whether you choose to do the side quests or not, it was stated that the game would be so and so hours. They didn't say the main quest would last you this many hours, they said the GAME would last this many hours. You can't blame developers for not enticing you to actually complete the game entirely. It isn't the developers fault you have the attention span of a fish.

Actually, IIRC, they said that the main quest lasted 20 hours and 40 hours for all of the quests (including the side quests) for one of the developers, and that we could expect 50-60 hours for a gamer playing for the first time.

I remember this because I was a HUUUUUGE pre-launch Mass Effect fanboy and hung on every news story.

Furthermore, an autistic savant with obsessive compulsive personality disorder would have problems completing the "game," as you call it. About 75% of Mass Effect's so-called "gameplay" was devoted to the same two or three missions repeated ad nauseam. I don't even see how you can argue against this.

this is a free roaming game with only one objective, to kill The Jackal... I bet it will be possible to do a 20 minute speed run like with STALKER... But, there will be so much else to do in the world that you will be able to spend up to 30-40 hours on the game.

This game looks absolutely amazing. Very underhyped. Far Cry 2 is pushing the consoles way passed their current "limits," but consolites would rather praise COD4, the game with no physics, nothing special AI, and mediocre graphics.

That's very high, obviously most people probably won't actually have that much game time, but that shows that this will be a pretty long FPS game. :) I've been wanting something like this.

Yeah... way too short. So much so that I felt hard-done by.

I doubt many people will actually spend 50hours on the campaign; I think he was just alluding to it as a possibility.

when are people gonna learn no game actually has 50 hours or more of gameplay? they got these devs that claim this and the game is out a month and someone beats it in 20 hours...i dont know maybe these devs are playing it on the hardest dificulty then sitting and looking around or something...

Actually, quite a lot of older games have 50+ hours of gameplay. Baldur's Gate II had about 40-60 hours of main quest gameplay, and over 150 hours of side quests. That's not a claim made by the devs, either.

65hrs for me confirmed....I always like to play around with environments and look at what is happening around me in open world games. Plus with how the devs describe things, I will most likely be planning out how to attack a base before I do it and get info of the surroundings....cant wait.

edit-I hope everyone knows I was joking about 65hrs but since most devs exaggerate their time fields, I will probably be close to 45-53 hrs.

yep. shooting loses it's novelty after 20-30 hours. you can't have REAL length in a shooter unless it's multiplayer.

Half Life and Metroid Prime say hello. It's easy to have more variety, all devs need to do is think. You can have loads of different monsters, that mixes things up, plenty of guns, ones you actually want to work towards using because they look fun to use, vehicles add to it which FC2 already has, puzzles, even just 10 or 15 simple ones spread out can mix up the gameplay and make it feel a lot less dull. Add into that the fact FC2 also has a massive environment, that if Ubisoft can make the AI work and move about realistically could be a lot of fun.

Imagine just driving along a path towards your next objective when you see something shady going on, a truck and a jeep parked there, you pull over, sneak in and see an arms deal going on, you run in shoot them all, and BAM you got yourself some free weapons...at least thats what you think. You carry on driving to your objective then you notice a jeep full of soliders trailing you, getting closer, another shoot out occurs. Imagine how cool it'd be if all the military acted smartly, looking for their pals. Rather than most games, oh we've not heard from our friends who went to do an arms deal for 2 hours even though they said they'd ring. Oh well let's just stay here.
