Are those our only two choices?

I guess I'll go with Unreal, just because it's proven to be more versatile.

Source. I just think it's got a real natural look to it that's aged well. Only real complaint I have about it is vegetation and things like that look bleh

I've never worked on a "game engine", let alone a licensed game engine that costs thousands of $$$ to use and I bet that 99% of the people here have either so I don't think any of us have a say in this. However if you say which is the most optimized graphics engine that delivers the best visuals out there with current hardware, that would be the Cry Engine 2.

I might be alone here, but either Sega's CANVAS engine, or the modded Scimitar engine they used for Prince of Persia.

There's a Total conversion mod in progress that turns Crysis into a fantasy RPG. But that's about it for now :P http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=40744&hilight=Tales+of

CryEngine 2, for putting the real world to shame.

Runners up are Unreal 2, Source, and Doom engines, for having the best communities and content developed around them.

Gamebryo, because it can keep track of so many things at once and still render heaps on screen.

Source is great because it generally looks great and is well optimized

Unreal engine is versatile, but hard ti make a game look good with it.

CryEngine 2 looks the best

How can you have a favorite engine,if you don't have any idea how it works and does? bu if you go by the looks of it i'did say MT Framework,Cry Engine,UE3.5 and KZ2 lighting engine KZ2 without that lighting is nothing.

Of all time? Lithtech, from 1.0 to 2.5. I simply loved the renderer, it looked very nice and was instantly recognizable. I don't like the new tech Monolith is using (from FEAR onwards) as much, but that's honestly because they are being limited by console hardware most likely, if they would stick to PC they would propably now have an engine that blows Cryengine 2 away.

From modern engines the two I like the most are:

X-Ray(STALKER engine), it looks amazing and extremely realistic and what's more it retains the good visual level on medium and even low settings

Blue Byte Engine (used in Settlers II remake, then in Settlers VI and now in Anno 1404)- it's a masterpiece of coding to be honest, it looks simply gorgeus and runs like a butter even on weak hardware. Amazing optimisation

There a group of modders working on Lightspire

http://lightspiregame.com/

an RPG based on CryEngine2, for now they're working on it like it would be a mod, but they intend to make it a full commercial game in the future

When Unreal is used correctly its a great engine, however since its so popular and developers are lazy to make their own it gets really annoying seeing the same engine used improperly over and over and over again.

painkiller is one of my favorites but i have none.

but the pain engine ran amazing on my 9800 pro back in the day was very well optimized engine.

this new game only for pc called necrovision is using the painkiller engine except they updated the lighting model now it's per pixel real time lighting.

it used to be pre rendered lightmaps.

This is a pretty stupid question, to be honest. The majority of us haven't built anything with those graphics engines so we don't know how the tools work and how the support is. We're pretty much basing our votes off of the graphics the artists and programmers make using the engine.

Source Engine. Its one of the most optimized engines ever created; not to mention it still puts out decent looking games for being a 4 year old engine. Probably followed by the Unreal 3 engine due to its optimization and its multiple visual/artistic styles.

If you mod Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3, you have a basic idea on how gamebryo works. Same can be said for HL2/Left4Dead(running on source) and Crysis (running on CryEngine 2)

I've made a couple full single player maps with the Cry Engine 2, complete with full set of scripting and such. I loved it. Never have used Garry's mod though... I should get on that. :P

Probably the Cry engine....IT LOOKS AMAZING (DUH) i don't know alot of games look good.....some game engines are bit overrated(Unreal Engine) Source Engine is good for the fact that it has stood the test of time...but i wouldn't say it is impressive in anyway....i don't exactly look at Left 4 Dead and have my jaw drop...Half Life 2 doesn't look as amazing anymore...and to be quite honest...Portal and TF2 were obviousaly good looking for artsty-le
