Ive owned all 3 consoles and I find the playstation is my console of choice. All platforms have pro's, cons, strengths and weeknesses.

That said, Ive felt somewhat let down by Sony because recently my PS3 packed up and I was happy that Sony replaced it for free while out of warranty. The thing im finding enfuriating is the fact that the hard drives are encrypted. I upgraded my old PS3 to a 400gb hard drive and thought that I would simply fit it to the new one... But no! It turns out they are formatted to be console specific so it's goodbye to all my save games, movies, and music.

Ive searched high and low but there seems to be no way to get this stuff back. Ive spent hours playing through my games and not sure I can be bothered to start again. This also goes for my DLC which ive installed on my old system twice so looks like im gonna have to pay for these again too! Im soo angry to the point where i just want to sell up. Sony Should:

  • A) Link your old serial number to the new one so that a server will tell the new console it can use the new hard drive
  • B) Offer a send in service whereby they will make it work on the new one or extract data (im happy to pay for this but it would still suck!)
  • C) Release a PC driver so that it can be fitted to windows/linux (but this of course would negate the DRM they are trying to protect)
  • D) Get the XMB to remind you to back up periodically.
  • E) Store save games remotely in the same way leader board data is.
  • F) Fix and return the original console

Im not going to format my 400gb drive in the hope that a saviour will make a hack or something to get my games back or sony wake up to their arrogance. If you dont have gamers on your side you have no reputation. Looks like im stuck with my 60gb and memories of what i once achieved. Id like to hear your comments and if anyone has a solution please send me an email.

Uhm...

1) I have never ever seen a 2.5" SATA drive come in at 400 GB...

2) You do know you can download downloads (no word play intended) 5 times right?

3) The drives are formatted to FAT32, there is no 'special' programming within the hard drive aside from the Playstation OS.

4) You should have backed up your files onto an external, I think it's pretty blunt obvious that if you TAKE OUT THE THING THAT HOLDS ALL YOUR SAVES AND FILES that it wouldn't be on the physical PS3.

It is not a 'Sony Letdown', it's your own error and fault. Research would have helped you a lot =/

That's pretty rough if true. I've had my 360 get the RROD twice now... but MS always tell you to just send the console in to them, not the hard drive. Then when they send your 360 back to you... all your licenses for everything you've bought on the marketplace get carried over, so you don't need to sign into Live to play them.

If you decide to buy a new 360... then you can download all your old content as many times as you like, as it's associated to your Gamertag. You would need to sign into Live though to be able to play it.

Sony let you down? What? :|

They are a money-grabbing company like all the others, as long as they make money they really don't care what consumers think. :?

First review came out in Jan of 09, meaning the product wasn't ready for sale until either Dec 08 or Jan 09. Last time I checked hard drives was back in June, I'm sorry I don't keep up to date with the latest 2.5" hard drive sizes.

That's not the only 2.5'' 400GB HDD in existence. Apparently Toshiba sells one too (model number HDD2H41), and a number of notebooks come with 2.5'' 400GB drives built-in. Just saying it really shouldn't be surprising, given that there are already higher-density 2.5'' 500GB dual-platter drives out there...

Why would you have to have the machine remind you to back up your stuff? Shouldn't you do that automatically every once in a while? Also, I'm pretty sure you can re-download your DLC as long as your using the account it's attached to. Morale of the story is "backup your stuff."

This is why you should always have another drive to back up this information, as you said in letter D. This is a great example as to why digital downloads can be one huge headache. One failure in the device or hard drive could completely ruin all of the media you paid for. As for your games, I'm pretty sure you can download those 4 or 5 times, and you can dl them on a PS3 other than your own too.

Are you serious? You did read the part in his post that says "Sony replaced my PS3 for free even though it was out of warranty" right? How is Sony money grabbing? He can download all of those digital games up to five times so I don't see where he's really losing money in all of this.

Hi CTU dude, I was just making some valid points and feel you've been a bit harsh with some of your blame!! In response:

  • 1) Yes there is a 400gb, Thats why i said i bought one. You can buy them from Currys in external format and just remove from the casing: "Western Digital 2.5" My Passport Essential 400 External Hard Drive". Works perfectly.
  • 2) I hope this is true but I thought i read somewhere is was 3 times. (maybe it was psp copies 3 times and ps3 5 times).
  • 3) Actually there is special coding. That's why i started this thread. There is no way you can access the files on the hard drive unless it's fitted to it's original console. check out an example: http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=bANZ_announcements_help&message.id=1814 ..... you cannot hook it up to a pc running windows or linux either to extract the data. Ive tried everything!
  • 4) At the time, I had no idea the consoles encrypted the data so why would I back up data on a brand new drive? (1 month old) Even if the drive failed eventually I thought i could use a data recovery company to get the data off but this is not possible given this new situation.

Ok im grateful sony replaced my console for free (though paying £425 for it to break after a 1 year warranty would have sucked if i had to pay repairs)... But they dont make it clear that the drive is formatted to be console specific. I guess if id have known i would make pen drive backups... At least i know now. I just dont see why i cant swap the drives over its a stupid principal.

Yeh i mean that would be a bit lame for a machine to have to remind you but i was just brain storming ideas!! lol :-) ... I will back up from now on given that i know the drive cant be fitted to another console. There is nothing wrong with the drive which is the sucky thing! :-(

Hello mate, Yeh it probably does belong on the ps3 board but this is my first proper post on GS forum so i figured console wars would be a good place as the topic influences whether people prefer the xbox wii or ps3 ... it's debateable where it belongs!! :-)

Wow some of you Sony fanboys are really over defensive :| this guy has lost all his saves he is entitled to be a little pissed, I dont see why Sony couldn't help with an issue like this tbh, by not helping people they are only encouraging you to look for alternate means of getting your data back (somebody will figure out a way to mod it).

Thanks for the supprt buddy. In my opinion it's such a minor technical obstacle that Sony look into with obvious solutions as I mentioned. In the forums ive read lots of people are super narked that this has happened to them - One guys played oblivion for 480 hours and lost the lot! I wouldnt call myself a fanboy as I think all consoles have good points and are balanced in different ways. The save games are most important to me as i have pics/vids/music on my pc. Cheers - Olly
