Hmm a hard one. 1 is locked down. the rest can change.
1) Deus Ex. A bit of a hybrid but really an RPG at its core. ground breaking in its day and it still has a trick or 2 up its sleeve that it could tech the newer whipper-snappers.
2) Morrowind. This just hit the sweet spot of depth and complex and fun to explore. i remember it being quite alien at the time. not the usual fantasy tropes. houses made of giant shells and mushrooms. travel on the back of giant ticks etc. later elder scrolls games have never really captured it. Controverial opinion: they should remove map pointers and any time fast travel from their future games. Really morrowind just needed a better journal...that was its biggest issue.
3) Final fantasy 7. Jaw dropping at the time. I still remember it well to this day. i'm looking forward to playing the Remake at some point....but with concerns.
4) Xenoblade chronicles. Just a real breath of fresh air. the world, the music, the gameplay, the story, just the whole package. one of the very few games i have bought twice (i bought the DE because i didnt finish it on the wii) and still consider it money well spent.
