Feudal Japan: strangely, a congested market for games in this setting

In the next year and a half, possibly two, we're getting three AAA projects all set in and pulling from ancient and historical Japanese lore:

  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Nioh 2

Nioh was already the first innovator on the scene (albeit perhaps a little too overboard with the RPG elements), but now suddenly the market is getting doused with a return to Japan. Personally it seems like a bit much all of a sudden; any worry that the overlap will negatively impact one another?

In the meantime, I'll go back to crying over the lack of any mention of Bloodborne 2. Well, at least until Smash shows up tomorrow.

I'd rather there be too many than too little of these. Not too long ago I was playing Warframe to get my reverse blade fix ?.

AC Japan soon?

I think the most likely that's gonna get cornered is GoT because it may not have as much flair due to the less fantasy/fantastic nature of the game or it seems to show that it won't have as much compared to the two.

Love it though.

It doesn't bother me as long as the game is good. The video game industry is always oversaturated with certain things like WW2 shooters and zombie games. But we haven't had a ton of samurai games in a while. It's a nice change IMO.

I hope a new Tenchu comes out of the trend. I miss the series.

Ghost of Tsushima is not set during Feudal era.

It's set during Kamakura/Hojo period, which few centuries before Onin War which kickstarted the Feudal era.

And while we are at that, Nioh is technically after Feudal era as well, though most characters lived the very end (and the most famous part) of Feudal era.

I disagree. If you don't like it then play something else instead.

I agree. I can't get enough of this era.

I want more games set around this era.

I'm not an aficionado or even an avid historian for ancient Japan, so apologies for the incorrect labeling. I simply defer to the common label used by gaming outlets when describing titles with a similar setting.

Wasn't the bloke in Nioh (William) an actual person, but not Irish or something?

He is.

The thing is, what you are describing is basically "Japan with samurai and some time in the past" which covers a long period of time. Having three games from that period in a single E3, 2 of them by Japan, isn't all that weird.

Honestly, Ghost of Tshuhima and Sekiro are two of the few games that caught my attention throughout the whole conference.

It is best to say that the games take place in pre-modern Japan (before the Meiji Restoration) as they take place in different periods in Japanese history.

Japanese (or Asian in general) culture and history are amazing. Honestly, if anything we need more games like this.

So people complain about war games and that are post apocalyptic and when they get a change of settings they complain about it being too much all of a sudden.....Marvellous.

Its a good change. The oversaturated theme for me this E3 is the dystopian post apocalypse setting.

Wish Forza Horizon 4 was also in modern Japan to complete the set.

Nah, it's a cool setting but now I honestly belive that only Japanese devs can do justice to it in a meaningful way. Western studios suck at hack n slash or good melee combat.

3 big games in this setting is too much now? Do we need another game set in America's distant future or something??
