Both games seem like they are trying to bring back qualities from older games in each of the series and divert themselves from recent entries (XIII and SS). That said, I'd have to go with FFXV. On paper it seems to be one of the most ambitious games ever, and so far most statements made about the game in the past seem to be materializing now (besides character switching). I know people like to use XIII and the original XIV as reference when talking about the quality of SE's output but this is a different creative team so I think it's a bit silly to use them to predict the quality of XV. Besides being part of the same series and being based on the same mythos there are no other similarities.
FFXV is definitely very ambitious. The production budget must be well over $100 million, with very high production values in a large open world, not to mention the amount wasted on Versus XIII.
While I think Zelda U will most likely be the better game, I'm more looking forward to FFXV simply because of the much bigger risk factor involved. Zelda U is already guaranteed to be a good game, even if Nintendo screw up. But there's no guarantee with FF, because when Squenix screw up, they screw up really bad. And FFXV is probably the biggest risk Squenix has ever taken.
The last time a game came out of development hell to become a good game was Resident Evil 4, which will be very difficult for FFXV to pull off. And considering just how hated FF has become, even by its own fans, it's going to be very difficult to win the fans back, let alone gain new fans. In a sense, FFXV could very well be the "last hope", or "final fantasy", for the FF franchise. And that's kind of what makes it all the more interesting.
