When you consider there are 12 games in the main series with at least 10 spin offs, that isn't surprising at all.

That averages what... like 3 million per game? Then you factor in the number of consoles they're on and the number suddenly is alot smaller.

The spinoffs rarely sell much its the main franchise that sells very high, I'm pretty sure 50 millions at least come from the main games FF1 to 12 (including FFX-2 and FF Tactics)

Um, have you played Xenogears? Not any of the Xenosagas, but Xenogears.  That game rivals FFVII! Some days I think it is better and sometimes not, but really I believe that FFVII and Xenogears are simultaneously the best RPG ever!

EDIT: I know it is your opinion just throwing that out there...

I certianly don't want to diminish Final Fantasy or its highly impressive sales.

But I do want to point out that the Mario franchise has sold 193 million units in its time.

This isn't a fanboy thing. It's really just to point out that those ol' mainstay games, yer Final Fantasy and Mario and (probably) Sonic, are definitely major players. That's all.

Considering there are hundreds of mario games (no kidding, its actually true) 193 million is not really that high, most games on that list are old and have many sequels etc. I am not saying mario is bad but its not completely amazing considering the average is about 1 million a game, not bad but most of its due to Mario being in almost everything from basketball, to tennis its crazy.

Square Enix Talks Future

Accordingly the company is not planning to release a lot of major titles for next-generation platforms during 2007 (Dragon Quest IX apparently being the exception). Instead, Square Enix aims to generate profit by releasing ports, remakes and lower budget titles.
