That's funny because FF 13 didn't look good at all. A lot of bloom was used sure, but it didn't seem like I was playing Pixar-quality animation and very photo-realistic characters, monsters, environments, etc etc
Give me ps2 graphics but a lot of care and effort into gameplay and none cookie cutter characters instead.
Has anyone stopped to think that towns wouldn't have worked in FF13? Think about it they were constantly on the run. If they stopped at a town then they would have been caught in an instant.
Considering how strong they were, I'm sure they could have dealt with the towns folk. :PHas anyone stopped to think that towns wouldn't have worked in FF13? Think about it they were constantly on the run. If they stopped at a town then they would have been caught in an instant.

bs. Developers say all kinds of stuff to cover their bad decisions. But yes I would rather have waited.
I approve of this commentId rather wait to play a good game then spend 60$ on a piece of crap

Here's another map:
As linear as FFXIII is, it's not all skinny narrow straight line like the beginning of the game.

If you look at the PS1 games, they're not really all that different from this. In some cases (like the airship), FFXIII offers a little more exploration than VII~X, as far as map design goes.

uh no FF7 had a very large overworld u can walk fly chocobo and use vehicles to go all around the world in
it had tons of towns that u can go anywhere in, the area's u can walk in 360 degree's all over the places tons of towns tons of building's and area's to explore
ff13 did not have more exploration im sorry but no it didn't ur wrong and thats it
I wanted to love this game but it didn't work for me. I've got FF3 for the DS now and I'm enjoying it a lot more. There's something much more exciting about traversing a world map, going back to places you already visited, accidently wondering into a fight that's way too much for you. I also prefer job roles and leveling up in FF3. Maybe the spin offs will offer more exploration.
This is how I feel about Mass Effect. What a mess.Id rather wait to play a good game then spend 60$ on a piece of crap

Thinking more on it, FFVII did offer more exploration in dungeons. But not really so for VIII, IX, and X. VIII~X were extremely linear.
I'm not contesting that FFXIII wasn't more linear than these games. They had world maps, optional dungeons, etc. But in terms of dungeon design, they were mostly linear.
And towns having tons of buildings in FFVII? I don't believe there was a single town int he game that had more than 10 buildings. On average, I would put them at about 5~7.
I'm sorry but FF3 is is just a bad game. FF13 to me is just not comparable to that one.I wanted to love this game but it didn't work for me. lol, I waited till it went down to 12 bucks used to buy it, so no regret. What a mess indeed it was though.

This is how I feel about Mass Effect. What a mess. at least Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 had excellent characters and storylines which make linear level design less of an issue. There is also towns and cities as well as non combat missions. It should be noted that the image he posted isn't even accurate.

its still very linear...the first map you posted (the palamecia just before the boss fight) was nothing but 3 straight lines...there was not even a reason to take road biffurcations...only the ones that were needed to get the treasures at the corners...which should I say are the only reason to "explore" in that game
While fairly linear, calling them "3 straight lines" is stretching it. On the left there's a portion with multiple platforms where you engage switches to move across the platforms, fight enemies, and gain treasure. The player can go straight ahead, or they can go to the sides and collect the multiple treasure chests. The scale of the area is huge and cavernous, and the 2nd block displayed to the right of the map is very large as well. The circular grid areas also offer opportunity for exploration, fighting optional areas, and gaining optional treasure.
It took me 20 min to gather everything in the leftmost section before the boss fight.
What other reason to "explore" is there in any other JRPG dungeons?
I think one of the problems with exploring in FF13 was that the treasures were usually crap. There wasn't really anything worthwhile in the treasure chests to really bother with. The game was fairly linear in the opening chapters, but once you hit the later ones it wasn't as much. While fairly linear, calling them "3 straight lines" is stretching it. I thought the treasures were pretty useful. A lot of treasures included useful items for upgrading weapons and accessories, as well as the elusive smoke items.
I would replace "fairly" with "extremely" for the beginning of the game though.

yeah but when does that happen? Like 30 hours into the game?.. Seriously why did they EVEN bother at that point.
I would want to see both. Considering that FF games are now sci-fi games (and not fantasy) I think being able to purchase items and gear in-game online works well. You should be able to go to a town and buy your gear like normal, but you should also be able to buy items and gear at anytime (except in battle) anywhere. The gist is that since you're buying from an online item shop, there's a gil shipping cost and you have to wait while the items are delivered to you.
So, you can have 2-3 major towns with shops, and if players need gear on the go, they can just order through the pause menu.
I mean, FF is getting more and more sci-fi and today people order over the net.

After 4 years, being "better looking" so does not cut it. Not even close.
I thought Final Fantasy XIII was a good game. Stay with me now. It was terribly linear which I didn't like at all, which broke the entire game. So although the designs, battle system, and story was enough to keep me entertained I got tired of simply walking on a track the entire time. I'm still crossing my fingers that Versus XIII will be what I expected out of XIII itself.
Whichever one will give me the better game, which is probably later. Then again, I don't want to wait another five years for a game after it is announced.
But the game worked without towns. Towns may have slowed the pace down which wasn't what the story was about, nor would it have made sense story-wise to stop in a town where everyone hates you. At least, I'm sure those are some things Square-Enix considered.

This easily fixable there could have been some sort of underground movement of Lacie sympathisers who were suspicious of the propaganda the gvt of coccon put out about pulse or something like that , I would have gladly waited another 2 years for towns
To be honest the new Square Enix should stop being so lazy when it comes to the Final Fantasy series. All other 12 Final Fantasy games had towns and next to all RPGs have towns.
Towns don't necessarily make an RPG good. I think overall I prefer having towns but I honestly didn't miss them that much in FFXIII.

It's not like they didn't build towns in FFXIII. There are city areas with NPCs in them. There just aren't shops, inns, etc. "Lazyness" has nothing to do with it; it's all there.

um...the list of better looking games this gen is like 5-6 games long...so yeah it totally cuts it.
Dev time=nothing
Lost Odyssey is as close to an old school FF in HD your going to get, and a far better game than FF13.Even though I really enjoyed FFXIII I would much rather wait to have one that has towns in it. I just want to have one that is reminiscent of the older installments but in hd.
