"Due to the continuous earthquakes occurring in the eastern regions of Japan since Mar. 11, 2011, the power companies in Japan have encouraged everyone to cooperate by conserving as much energy as possible as it is feared there will not be enough power supply. Based on the current situation, we have decided to shut down the game servers temporarily, and therefore to suspend services of FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline temporarily.

The services will be temporarily suspended for at least a week starting on Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT). We will provide an update regarding the reinstatement of the service as additional information becomes available. In connection with the temporary suspension of services, players will not be billed for any PlayOnline service throughout the April billing cycle. Additional information regarding this matter will also be posted as it becomes available.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your understanding of this unusual situations.

[Date & Time]
A week starting from Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT)

[Affected Service]
- FINAL FANTASY XIV
- FINAL FANTASY XI
- PlayOnline

* Additionally, the following services are currently unavailable:

- Friend List Plus
- FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community Beta Version
- PlayOnline Friend List Application
- Community Site Link Registration: Owner Menu

* Please be advised that we will continue to operate the official websites, FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone, forums, and the SQUARE ENIX Support Center to be able provide our customers with updates on the current situation.

An excerpt from the Caution posted on
TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY (TEPCO)'s home page:

A big earthquake occurred in the northern part of Japan at 2:46PM of March 11th 2011. Because TEPCO's facilities have been seriously damaged, power shortage may occur.
TEPCO appreciates customers' cooperation in reducing electricity usage by avoiding using unnecessary lighting and electrical equipment.
We are taking all measures to restore power, however, we expect extremely challenging situation in power supply for a while. We kindly ask our customers to cooperate with us in reducing usage of power."

I know this might be the best area to post this due to MMO hate. but look past that. its really serious and very sad what japan is dealing with. god bless them and their fallen love ones. even thou the game was playable during this time they made the best choice to use energy for people in need. hell ill donate my 2 account billings if i can. its not much but its better than nothing. they are keeping the XI and XIV fourms up for now. see ya there

That is fine, if they cancel my game time I will simply refuse to play FFXI again. Are they forgetting the fees that we the consumer have to pay to play their games? With that said how does this belong in System Wars? I guess I can say that the PC is the best version...

I'm surprised they've done this tbh, but glad. My monthly FFXI subs fee will go to a charity to help with the disaster. People were screaming in-game (FFXI) that the servers were going down forever yesterday... was a tad funny.

Exaclty if banks went downpeople would not want to put money in a bank for losing their money.

If WoW went down for a whole week people would quit playing because they are loosing a good portion of the month they paid for.

Unless Square gives me more time then the time I lost then I am quiting FFXI and probably switching to WoW.

I still do not see why this topic belongs in System wars since we are not discussing how the PC version is the best.

Why are people upset about this? They have a good reason to shut down servers. I think its more important to save energy to help the Japanese people in need rather then keep a server up so people can continue to play.

Please do not act like the tragedy in Japan is the only one occuring in the world and please do not act like Square could not easily allocate their servers to being hosted in the United States. (maybe through a temporary deal)

They are taking a service away for not just a day but for over a week. This upsets me because I cannot play and I spent alot of time on my Dragoon and I and while I care for what is happening in Japan and will donate money to any charity I see started there (probably a couple hundred infact instead of buying a PS3). I will not support a corporation that has the resources to correct this.

Anyways this does not belong in system wars other then discussing the fact that FFXI is unavailable as a ps3 game or version differences.

Well in both cases you are losing money its a comparison not an equal comparison but a comparison.

The fact is I am not only losing money but I am not able to play the product I payed for.

All i know is... If WoW went down for a week i would not get upset and refuse to play the game.

Square Enix will hopefully give everyone a little somethin somethin anyways for the problem.

Because the thread is about FFXI shutting down and when some had problems with it shutting it down others in this thread questioned their conscience...

There are plenty of places far worse off then Japan and Square Enix is just using this as an excuse imo as they could easily move the servers temporarily to be hosted in EU or the US.

Again this topic itself should not be in SW imo and as the topicdoes not discussthe PC versions of the game is superiority or differences of the versions.

How do you know they easily could? Oh, you don't. They're losing money through doing this, so stop thinking it's some conspiracy which highlights how evil SE are or something - they're putting their country before videogames, seems logical in the wake of a natural disaster.

Ok you tell me one place that recently had a huge disaster like Japan had. According to the news, Japan is a huge topic now.

Yup Square Enix is bad for shutting down servers to conserve energy to help people in need.

But hey, playing a MMO is more important then helping people in need. You gotta lvl up the mage you know what im saying.

So you're whining about not being able to play your game for a week despite the fact that you're not being billed for it while people in Japan are facing one of the biggest earthquakes in human history? Nearly 1000 people are already dead and you're raging because you can't have a weeks worth of entertainment from SE? You're unbelievable, I don't even have words to describe you. I find it sickening how people are treating this situation. I don't think allocating their servers to the US is exactly their top priority right now when there are lots of people missing, many dead, and others trying to stay alive. I can't believe you're trying to downplay an 8.9 earthquake and a tsunami by comparing it to a bank closing down.

So I am barely going to be able to play in April and even if that a free month does not make me forgive the sudden loss of access that was promissed to me when I payed for the fees. They should of atleast given everyone a free month they can activate when they chose but imo they should give two months to make up for it as they essentially lied about the play time you would recieve.

Of the versions I have played the PC and Ps2(at my friends house). The PC is the superior one imo as keyboard is much better suited to MMOs and the PC version has better graphics.

I can't believe you're trying to downplay an 8.9 earthquake and a tsunami by comparing it to a bank closing down.

Okay so I am not entitled to my opinion that there is alot worse happening in the world daily and that I am being ripped off by an international corporation that I feel is unfairly cutting off the service they promised to those who pay when they could temporarily host the servers overseas without having my morality attacked?

Also I never made the comparison to the bank I simply agreed with it and that is my viewpoint . I did feel that this is not supposed to be in system wars but it should be in general games but alot of topics fit that bill. I also stated that the PC version isthe bestversion. I feel this because , it has better graphics , controls, and I can multitask (skype phonecalls) and play.

Again I'm going to ask....serious? How are you being ripped off? The country hasn't even started to recover from an 8.9 earthquake and a tsunami, and is now facing difficulties with infrastructure, food, electricity, people missing, and nuclear plants going haywire... Granted that's not everywhere, but considering the focus is now on helping those affected, and trying to get everything remotely stable again, your enjoyment of a videogame is trivial. I really suggest playing a different game, or going outside if you're that angry about it.

Banjo_Kongfooie

Worse things happen daily? Really? Well then enlighten me, tell me exactly what happens daily that is oh so much worse than thousands of people dying, way more getting injured, entire houses and offices being destroyed, landslides, tsunamis, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake, basically something you'd see in a 2012 movie. Tell me, if I you were to be holding continuous parties at your house, and I promised I'd go to your party, but then my dad died and I wasn't able to come for the week, would you act the same way? Because that's pretty much how it is. You're not even being charged for April so you're not being ripped off at all. If you don't see the problem about you being worried about not being able to play a game for a week and bashing SE despite the fact that Japan is undergoing a huge crysis, then I really don't know what to say.

You aren't being billed for the month of April.

DEAL WITH IT!

the earth does not revolve around you, look at the bigger picture of what is happening in japan at the moment.

I am not angry, I am upset and simply stated they will never see a dime of my money on FFXI again if they really are using a No payment during april as retribution for not offering promised services.

The earthquake did not only affect Japan and Japan is one of the top world economies and generally live a better life then most people in "developing" countries.

Again I said I feel bad for what happened there and even though it is not my fault or my problem I will donate money when I see a charity like Red Cross ask for it. I have no sympathy for a international corporation that is cutting off services to those unaffected by this disaster,

Also why are we not discussing that FFXI is only PC, 360, PS2 and the differences (PC is the best imo) on system wars?

It's good that you'll donate money, I might too. But you have to understand that however big a corporation is - they have bigger priorities at the moment. Do you think they want this? Of course not, they're losing out too! Japan is developed, but the disaster has hit them a lot worse than anywhere else. I've been following news for the last 48 hours and the clean up operation has barely started due to difficult circumstances. It would be the same anywhere else, and I'm sure if you were in Japan you'd be a bit annoyed if a massive corporation using loads of vital electricity decided to serve a video game player across the globe, rather than do their best to help the present situation.

Well, I guess it's a good thing people don't have to pay for FFXIV.
Seriously, that earthquake was terrible, and it's nice to see S-E cooperating to help the rest of the country.
I know that Square is located in japan but they can easily get a different host by making a few phone calls and sending in checks. They would not need to use electricity if hosting was sent overseas for the time being and yes I am donating money to Japan like I did during Katrina, 9/11, AIDS research etc. and while I usually only donate like fifty dollars I have like four hundred set aside to get a Ps3 and I will give it to the effort in helping Japan.

Again I am not made at the Japanese and my sympathies go to Japan, I am just upset with the way corporations are treating their consumers lately.

I pity you my friend. i dont know why are you trying to point out the fact that the pc version is the better version..... i think everyone knows that. and by corporations treating their consumers is very off the wall. ether you have a deep hate toward SE or by people effected by this earthquake, your comments are almost worst than the trolls on twitter and facebook saying that this was bad karma. the reason this was posted in systems wars is that the game in effect is also on consoles but that dosent matter you cant play on ether version. youre on a unnecessary rage mode and you should look back and understand whats going on. this isnt no quick few month fix. the kobe in 95 earthquake took 10 years to fix. hopefully everythink will get back up and running next week if not then so be it others things are in need at the moment.

Why are people upset about this? They have a good reason to shut down servers. I think its more important to save energy to help the Japanese people in need rather then keep a server up so people can continue to play.

You sicken me. A huge natural disaster strikes Japan, killing people, ruining lives, and they still aren't recovered from it. Power companies are trying to conserve power that might be necessary to SURVIVE if things don't improve quickly. And then there's you. Sitting at home, on your ass, complaining because your precious MMO is unavailable for a week. You're apparently unable to get off of said ass, go outside, play another game, anything. It's a f***ing week without a game. Big deal. Grow the f*** up.

.... And that's that. (Cough* OWNAGE*cough) Really, (Getting back on topic) who cares about FFXI or FFXIV anyway?

Where would you even get the remote idea that I hate the people of Japan? I never once said that and even stated I was going to donate money to them like I did during Katrina, 9/11 etc. I do not get how you can compare me to people saying that this is bad karma when I said nothing of the sort. I said that while I sympathise with the people of Japan I also sympathy with others affected by the earthquake and others in general who undergo trama.

I said I was upset with Square preventing me from playing a product that was promised to me after my payment and that they are only giving a month in April to redeem this when they could easily get EU and USlocated servers to host FFXI.

It doesnot matter that this effects the consoles because it is not arguing in favor of one or comparing anything I said the PC was the best version to make it on topic to System Wars.

Why are people trying to spin my legitamite complaints against Square not getting the servers hosted in the US or EU?
