Those who have their hands on the Final Fantasy XIII demo, which came bundled with the special edition Advent Children Complete, have been reporting an interesting aspect of the game. It runs in 1080p! Most current generation games run in 720p, and if you have a PS3 hooked up to a 1080p TV, then in the settings you can check off all the resolutions so that the PS3 auto detects what the game wants to be output as. If all the check boxes are selected, then a game like Uncharted will run at its native resolution of 720p, while a game like Super Stardust HD will run at 1080p. Now that most of the technical jargon has been explained, here is what is interesting about the FF XIII demo. The PS3 chooses to run the demo at 1080p, which means that the supported resolutions for FF XIII are 480p/720p/1080i/1080p. Having said this, just because the game supports a 1080p resolution, does not mean that it is running at a native 1080p, but rather an upscaled 720p. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an example of this (though the game actually ran at 1024x768 and then upscaled). However, there are some aspects of the demo which appear to be running at a native 1080p, not an upscaled 720p.FF-XIIInet

So it's all speculation that it's running native? When the full game releases, it'll be 1080p upscaled. Best believe it.

Let's see if the full release will stay that way, and MGS 4 ran in 1080p? My t.v. always had it convert to 720p. Not that it matters I guess, I'm sure the textures would look just as ugly.

Thanks, now it is obvious why it looks so far behind Lost Odyssey visually, they should have gone for 720p and add shaders and polygons instead of cutting back and have so last gen charatcers

Something like this just might change whether I buy it on 360 or PS3. The tv that my 360 is on only goes up to 720p, but I can play it whenever I want. The tv that my ps3 is on is in the living room(can't play when someone is watching tv) but it runs in 1080p. I still haven't decided.

1080p is a dream for current get consoles, they simply don't have enough ram to pull it off. 1080p frames take up lots of space which is scarce on consoles. Simply put, if you take almost any current gen game like Gears, FEAR2 etc the console physically wouldn't be able to render it. They should stick to 720p for this gen, and concentrate on quality content instead.

You're either too far away, or you have a rubbish TV. At 46", sitting within 7FT will show the -full- benefit of 1080P sources. I can attest to this.

Did you mean you were betting that its running Natively 1080p when you said Unscaled, or did you mean Upscaled?

As far as your question: Any game that supports 1080p will display correctly in 1080i.

Well, no. But with the PS3 version being the lead console with a considerable headstart in development I could see the possibility. Actually, I could also see Microsoft throwing a fit about that. They already cannot be too hapy about SE's comments that they'll do their best to make the 360 version look as close as possible to the PS3...

The cutscenes will probably be 1080p native while the rest of the game is upscaled. I doubt the X360 will have 1080p native in the cutscenes, because that would take up a lot more space.

FF13 characters are lower polygon, and have not nearly the effects, shaders and lighting of LO ones like the below

Unless someone posts a in game pic to prove otherwise, look at how stunning the armor, lighting, polygon counts (everything is round) etc look below

And that is completly in game, no cut-scene

From what we know Final Fantasy is far from being in the final stages of any build considering they decided to take all the time in the world to release it. I can't see LO ever beating it in the graphics department. So I wouldn't judge a game that is always praised for its groundbreaking graphics from some pre-release screens and compare them to the full released build of another.

I think the Japan version will be 1080p, and we will get the upscaled version just like the 360 to accommodate it.

Nothing about the appearance of this game suggests 1080p to me, 1080p requires butchering resources on consoles to accommodate the requirements of the resolution.

I don't care. In fact if they let the game run at 720p it will be better since they'll be able to let more things happen at once or we may get better frame rates. A pixel or two wouldn't make that much difference to me.
