I was looking on wikipedia about Final Fantasy XIII and it said that Final Fantasy XIII used the White Engine which is developed by Square, but future Square games will use the Unreal Engine 3. The last remnant's wiki page states that it uses the Unreal Engine 3.

I don't know anything about graphics, but I feel like i should set myself up for dissapointment rather than be overly excited for the visuals of FFXIII. Killzone 2's 2005 trailer and the 2007 trailer sure have some HUGE gaps. The fire alone looks radically different, not to mention textures, smoke, and character models. Likewise, the FFXIII trailer may be a little too good to be true no?

The last remnant certainly doesn't look super impressive...and Square must have licensed the UE3 for a reason even after it had developed the white engine. Perhaps the trailer is pulling our leg a little?

Everyone is liscensing the U3 engine. That doesn't mean all games will use it. And never take Wikipedia seriously when it comes to sensetive or unconfirmed information.

It will look amazing don't worry. If I recall correctly they are using the Unreal Engine for multiplat games like Last Remnant.

Square said that the trailers of FF13 were realtime. There were a couple of CG scenes sprinkled in though. FF13 Versus was clearly CG. If you look in the past, Square has never set a goal they couldn't reach (graphically).

Its not a mystery WE specifically used for PS3 titles. UE3 engine is easier for multi-plats. What does that tell you? That SE will be much more supportive of multi-plat gaming than last gen.
KZ2 CG and E3 trailers didn't have a big as gap as you might think just watch the GT comparison.

FFXIII trailer is possible after seeing RE5.

True, but i'm pretty sure the last remnant does use the unreal 3 engine.

It's just kind of strange that Square would license UE3 if they had something very comparable on their hands. It may be because it's cheaper to work with and not because it has more potential visually, i don't know.

He hinted that Square Enix is considering using the engine for games after Final Fantasy XIII. The recent announcement of the company's plans for the Unreal Engine 3 caused some concern that Final Fantasy XIII would be the first and last sighting for the internally developed toolkit."
